This effort is a collaborative Project between:

Linda Universitys Basic Science Division.

The overall project is multi-faceted. It also includes

contribution from the LLU dept. of Geology (Prof.
Kevin Nick), and Prof. Ryan Sinclair from the School
of Public Health (not discussed today)
 Pesticide Degradation

Generally: (unbalanced)

Pesticides degrade by hydrolysis.(SN2 type Mechanism)

Base Catalyzed (OH- is 103-105 x faster)
Overall products: Inorganic Phosphate & Sulfate, and other organic molecule that
can degrade further, even to CO2, depending on available oxidant.
Catalysis nightmare for molecular/Atomistic level of understanding. (see Next Slide)

 Rationale
Our Curent Approach:

1. Our Experiments will focus on ONE reaction: how to catalyze hydrolysis of Tri-
Esters Di-Esters passively. (We will leave full oxidation of OPCs to the
Military for complete removal of Nerve Agents)
2. We will focus on the Aromatic linkages.
3. We will use type of Ilmenite as a surface for catalysis.

Our Contract
 Some Important Notes
The Lecture Notes will be Posted on Canvas as a PDF full slide, and will
have announcements/due dates on each one, so I will usually not send
email about that kind of stuff: if you miss class, everything you missed will
be on there.
A hand-out with lecture notes will be provided at the beginning of every
class.
Hand writing is better then typing by far for this. (How would you type all
these equations while I am talking anyways???) So laptop use if
discourage so you dont distract yourself and your neighbors.
I suggest you buy a real note taking pen laptop: like MS Surface, or
IPAD pro, or Wacom Cintiq: it will serve you well.
My Handwriting is terrible, I apologize in advance.
 Some Important Notes
I will treat like Grown Ups: HW barely graded, expectations.
You will be provided with some of my Old Exams in case you dont have a cousin
who took this class previously.
My Job in class is to provide you with the Theoretical Frame work during my
Lectures: To provide you with the Big Picture.
I will not expect that you have read the book Before class, but I do expect if you
didnt understand what I Lectured, that you will read up on it.
This is primarily a PROBLEM SOLVING class, and the Problems are
complicated.
If time allows I might do a few example problems, but again time is an issue with 30-
45 mins to solve problems, Lecture periods are too short.
 Very Important Notes

Problem Solving will be mainly done by YOU. Solving problems in P-

Chem will consume most of your time outside of class.
If you do NOT solve your homework problems, you will fail.
Past Experience shows that people who copy the Solution Manual score
<25% on their first Exam: thats about 50% of my previous classes.
The material is inherently cumulative, and it is difficult to
catch up once one has fallen behind, or studying at the last
minute.
 Dr. Allards Promises:
I will ONLY test you on Material covered in class:
Lectures, quizzes and HW are all fair-game. But sub-
chapters in your book that I skipped over, will NOT be on
any exams.
I will minimize the amount of material you have to
memorize, and provide you with most relevant equations
on exams.
It is guaranteed you will fail if you dont practice problem
solving in a meaningful way.
