FINAL EXAMINATION IN CURRENT TRENDS AND ISSUES OF PHYSICAL

EDUCATION (PEH203)

1. Enumerate three (3) new trends in physical education that are being adopted by your school/
Institution. Explain their significance and their implication to your existing Physical
Education curriculum.

STUDENT HEALTH DECLINE PROMPTS CHANGE

-Phys-ed curriculum changes have been prompted in part by reports that the nation's
children weigh more and are less active than ever before. And with many school systems
sacrificing phys-ed time to squeeze in more classroom time, students are getting even less
exercise. By a quality program, P.E.4Life means one centered around activities that
students can do throughout their lives, Flannery says. "It should be about introducing
them to something they like and having them stick with it." At the same time, P.E.4Life
does not think team sports should be completely eliminated from phys-ed curriculums.
"There still are lessons learned from games; it's still important to have that exposure to
sports."

CHANGES TO P.E CURRICULA

-The current trend in PE instruction has focused less on fun and team sports and more on
getting children healthy. To that end, instructors have had to outline and define goals specific
to increasing life-long health. They've identified three core areas for focus: current fitness
levels, educating health matters, and teaching how to plan for long-term exercise. The first
key is a focus on fitness. The overall quality of PE classes has shifted from a fun release of
energy to an increased scope of physical health. The once popular dodge ball game is no
longer considered quality instruction because of one important component: children are
eliminated and not being active.
THE COLLECTION OF THE BEST PRACTICE FOR SPORT PROMOTION AT
SCHOOL
- The project provides teachers and school staff with online best practices to be used to
promote sports [2]. It creates a network of schools and sports associations which
collaborate to promote an ethical based approach to sport and a more conscious attitude
towards the importance of physical activities in students life. Project partners have
collected and reviewed success stories and best practices in the promotion of sport and
physical activities at school and in their integration with the educational offer.

3. Choose two (3) of the following and discuss its advantages and disadvantages on the students
and the teachers.

I. MAPEH
ADVANTAGES of a teacher and Students.

MAPEH is important subject. Because its connected to our statistical skills, and its 4 main
components (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) are related to our daily lives and we
can use MAPEH in our college years, in any course

MAPEH, which stands for music, arts, physical education, and health, has great importance in
everyday life. At the very least, music and arts provide an outlet for relaxation. Physical
education teaches the importance of keeping the body active and moving. Health helps to teach
one how to stay well and things that they should and should not do to their bodies. Students do
not only acquire factual and theoretical knowledge but are also introduced to applications like
singing, playing Filipino and Asian instruments, listening to recordings, and reading, writing and
creating music. Physical Education aims to make the students physically strong, well-poised,
sound and efficient, mentally alert and active, and emotionally tempered and well-balanced. Each
year level takes on a different fitness program such as sports, gymnastics, dancing, and martial
arts. Health Education is designed to keep students abreast with health concerns and issues.
Lessons on Health Assessment, Proper Hygiene, First Aid, Drugs and Substance Abuse, Mental
Health, Communicable and Non-communicable diseases, Alternative Medicine and Nutrition and
Fitness all aim to lead the students to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

On a daily basis, MAPEH teachers face unmotivated students and students who are living
unhealthy lifestyles. While these students can pose a challenge, they also provide an opportunity
to help the students learn to value physical education and make changes that could improve their
health and well-being for a lifetime. A physical education teacher may also have a better
opportunity to reach students other teachers cannot reach by connecting with them over sports
and teaching a subject that is often better received than math or science.

Teaching MAPEH is just one responsibility of a physical education teacher. Teachers may also
be responsible for teaching other classes, such as health or nutrition, or may oversee study halls.
In addition to general responsibilities during school days, physical education teachers often
double as coaches for at least one sport. Even if a teacher does not coach, he may be responsible
for attending sporting events held in the gym, and may be in charge of the general upkeep of the
gym and outdoor fields.

Disadvantages of MAPEH

A MAPEH teachers gets to spend most of the day in the gym or outdoors. Having multiple places
to hold class gives a physical education teacher more flexibility than other teachers, but the
spaces where a physical education teacher works may also be one of the biggest frustrations. But
some School gyms are often used for assemblies and other programs, which may regularly
interrupt plans. When a class is planned in an outdoor space, inclement weather may require
having to change plans quickly or make the teacher work in an undesirable environment.

When it comes to doling out money from limited school budgets, physical education often gets
whatever is left over. If there is a lack of funds, physical education teachers must be creative with
the equipment they have, and often must work with worn-out or damaged equipment. This may
lead to teachers not having enough equipment for all students, especially when class sizes are
large. Sometimes budget cuts require schools to share physical education teachers, which means
a teacher does not have a permanent classroom, and may be at a different school every day of the
week or visit more than one school each day

MAKABAYAN

ADVANATAGES

(a) the articulation of more complex and higher-level learning goals, (b) the streamlining and
integration of learning areas in the curriculum, and (c) the use of creative and innovative
teaching approaches to improve student learning. These themes are discussed in the case
of Makabayan - a new learning area that integrates several subjects with the goal of
helping each Filipino student to develop a healthy personal and national identity. The
problems in realizing the curriculum aims are discussed, focusing on the difficulties in
fully articulating the ideal curricular elements, constraints in the implementation, and the
weak conceptualization of the learning reform in the context of Philippine education.

(b) The learning goals defined in this ideal can be classified in the range of metalearning and
metacognitive skills that cut across the different domains of learning. More important, the
learning goals have a strong affective and value component; thus, the cognitive skills are
supposed to be guided by appropriate beliefs and values that are deemed important by
Philippine society. The connection between the higher learning goals and values is made
explicit in the following statement, It is learning how and not just what, in order that
learners do the work themselves and thus have an experience of genuine democracy,
where people have not only rights but also responsibilities

DISADVANTAGES

Students do not all learn at the same rate. Periods of equal length are not appropriate for all
learning situations. Educators are no longer dealing primarily with top-down transmission of the
tried and true by the mature and experienced teacher to the young, immature, and inexperienced
pupil in the single-subject classroom. Schools are moving toward the inclusion of another whole
dimension of learning: the lateral transmission to every sentient member of society of what has
just been discovered, invented, created, manufactured, or marketed. For this, team members with
different areas of expertise are invaluable.

II. ALS ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM

ADVANTAGES

I think another advantage to alternative education is a relentless focus not only on student
achievement (both the academic and social/emotional development) but also on family and
community engagement. It takes a village

Alternative education gives hope and saves lives by giving students another chance. It is one of
the greatest joys in life. It gives teachers a chance to recover their passion for one of the most
difficult and most important jobs in the worldteaching. It gives teachers an opportunity to do
whatever it takes to interact with young people in an experience like no other, while providing
options for students who thought they had no options. Students see the advantages of alternative
education as a place that is student centered, safe, accepting of everyone, and a place where
students feel that they belong. It is never a less than education, but rather an approach that is
different. It is a place that provides respect, relationships, and relevance to the real world and a
place where students can become re-engaged. Students report that the connections that are made
by alternative educators are not so much in their methods, but in their hearts. It is a place where
students are invited and they can thrive, because it is a place where the environment is changed
and not a place where we try to change students to fit our mold. Alternative education is a model
that believes all students can succeed, and a model that is leading educational reform.
Alternative education is powerful and is positively affecting our nations dropout crisis.

They get to create their own schedule at the beginning of every year. Courses are
advertised and it is then voted on what takes place when.
Any student is free to teach any class they want. Weve had students teach
anything from dance classes to apocalypse survival class to sci-fi to mindfulness. And
yes, all of these actually went for real credits.
They have a blocked schedule. Instead of the typical eight period day, we have four
blocks a day, each having the same amount of time as two normal periods. Then our
classes alternate days. This is nice as I now have two days to complete homework.
They have a lot more downtime. Inbetween each class we have 3045 minutes to
chill out, get lunch or icecream, take a walk, attend and meditation/mindfullness
session, talk to a teacher, etc. Nothing feels so rushed and I actually have time to pee.
They get a week off every year to design our own learning experience. For
example last year, my freshman year, I spent over 80 hours on a giant photorealistic
drawing. Other students have: gone to NYC, made a video game, shadowed a baker,
shadowed a teacher, gone camping/hiking, you can honestly do anything as long as its
efficient.
They get the second half of our senior year off to do a huge self guided learning
experience. Weve had students back pack Europe, teach a ESL class in South
America, intern a broadway company in NYC, work with marine biologists in Puerto
Rico, work in homeless shelters, again the possibilities are endless.
The school is built literally like a house/barn. Its probably 400 sq ft at most. It
has eight classrooms, one bathroom per gender, an office, one giant room (the upstairs
is like a balcony over this room), a small art room, and a guidance counselor office.
Because the school is so small the community is super close. It truly feels like a
second home/second family. With only about 40 kids per grade, we have about 160
kids total (only 120 compared to when the seniors are gone.) Compare this to the 1,700
at our regular school.
They get the best of both worlds. They have a shuttle bus that takes us to the main
high school campus so we can also take regular classes if we please.
They have a ton of neat opportunities. Last year they had a group go to NYC for a
week, another group backpacked a national park for a month, we go to an awesome
camp every year, and we have a day every year with tons of guest speakers.

DISADVANTAGES

They dont have very many AP classes. However they can take them at their main
campus, but this can be a bit inconvenient.
They have to get all of our credits faster in order to get the second half of our senior
year off.
They dont have art, music, or language classes. However they can again take them
at our homeschool.

III. MTB-MLE MOTHER TOUNGE BASED MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION

ADVANTAGES

Using the mother tongue for instructions ensures mostly complete comprehension in kids of what
is the exact task. Language switching is just an indicator for an interlanguage, a temporary status
of language competence: with the foreign language developing further through the continuing
lessons, the use of the mother tongue can be reduced.
Preferably, an immersion with only one language being used at all is more natural, provides more
language stimulus and is very efficient, according to latest findings.
The choice of the language is a recurrent challenge in the development of quality education.
Speakers of mother tongues, which are not the same as the national language, are often at a
considerable disadvantage in the educational system.

With MTB-MLE, we expand the access to social, political, economic and physical development
processes, which are often unreachable for children who speak a different mother tongue. These
children, are unable to learn as much about their society, not because they are cognitively
inferior.
Rather, it is because by the time that they enter school, they have become proficient in
communicating using their mother tongue. MTB-MLE helps pupils gain confidence not only in
expressing themselves, but also in learners new concepts in school.
DISADVANTAGES
There could be a disadvantage in using the Mother tongue for instruction that is different to what
is used in the text books if students are being tested in the language used in the text book. As
Heiner suggested, you need to find a good balance between the two. The attached conference
paper presents research on how the overuse of the Mother tongue actually contributed to
students' limited English language skills, in which they were being tested that negatively affected
their overall performance in school. Social media was considered as a medium to help develop
their English language skills by asking them to choose topics they would like to discuss on
Facebook, and the teacher then moderated the students' exchange for good use of the English
language. I hope you find it useful to your research.
Disadvantage of it is when the students are not using their native tongue as mother tongue,
meaning they use other language like English. This is the problem if in a specific locality there
can be more languages used as mother tongue.
The disadvantages of using the mother tongue as the method of instruction among primary
school children is - they will be habitual to think and express their thoughts in mother tongue.
After primary school, it will be difficult for them to adopt/switch over to other language as a
medium of instruction because their ability of adopting languages decreases with age.
