World War I Layered Project

Be sure to consider AMERICAN experiences during WWI unless otherwise stated. Include works cited for all tasks.

To wrap up this unit, World War I, you will delve into topics that are of most interest to you! You will be
completing several projects of your choice. There are three layers of projects: C (mandatory work), B (smaller
points), and A (big points). You must complete at least one task per level. The items with a star (C layer) are
REQUIRED of every student. The entire project is worth 145 points. (Break Down: 65 points Mandatory
assignments; 65 points to be acquired through project choices in layers B & A; 15 points Show-N-Tell Day)

Show and Tell Day- at the conclusion of this layered project each student will have 5-7 minutes to present one
activity/assignment that you worked on throughout the layered project. These presentations must be assignments
from Layers B & A. (15 points)

Note: Just because you turn in a 10-point project doesnt guarantee that youve earned ten points. You have to earn
the points, so be sure you follow the directions and complete your work accordingly! You will be provided with a few
work days during class, some of the projects may need to be completed outside of school.

you feel are important for students of World War I to know. Then create flashcards with definitions & Pictures for

*____/5 points Wilsons 14 Points and the Treaty of Versailles Complete the worksheet comparing the two plans
to end the Great War. (11/27)

*____/7 points Americas Time "The Century- Shell Shock" Video Watch the video during class and take notes
about important events, people, and ideas. Then write a 3-paragraph summary of the video. Attach your notes to
the assignment post. (11/17)

the video, then write a minimum of a one paragraph summary about the Harlem Hellfighters and their history.

notes throughout the video, then write a minimum of a one paragraph summary of the video.

____/5 points Propaganda Poster Create a propaganda poster for WWI. Then, write one complete paragraph
about the imagery, symbolism, people, etc., youve included in your poster, detailing their significance.

____/5 points Pre-War vs Post-War Maps Locate a map of the world in 1914 and another of the world in the
1920s. How do they compare? What changed in borders and empires? Who seems to have come out on top, based
on the changes of borders? Who didnt fare so well? What surprises you about the changes? (Attach the maps you
studied to your written responses to the questions.)

____/10 points A Day in the Life You will write a short story about what daily life is like for a teenager in America
during WWI. What do they do? How did life change compared to life before war was declared? (2-3 typed pages)

____/10 points Military Uniforms and Supplies Research the materials American soldiers or sailors would be
assigned. What would they wear? What would they carry with them (military or personal)? What was included in
their rations? Create a poster, video, slideshow, or essay, detailing at least ten items soldiers or sailors would have
with them on a daily basis.

____/10 points New Age of Weapons Create a poster, video, slideshow, or essay about the weapons Americans
utilized during WWI. Include at least ten different types of weapons (basically, dont just choose ten types of guns,
etc.).

____/10 points Life in the Trenches Create a poster, video, slideshow, or essay about the experiences of American
soldiers in the trenches. Include at least ten different aspects of life in the trenches.

____/10 points War is a Deadly Experience Review the diseases and other causes of death soldiers/sailors faced
during WWI. Create a poster, video, slideshow, or essay to explain at least ten causes of casualties.

____/10 points World War I Timeline Create a timeline of 10 World War I events. Begin with the assassination of
Franz Ferdinand and end with the Treaty of Versailles. Include a mix of military and diplomatic events. For each
event, please include two sentences about it (include important people and details) and an appropriate image.

____/10 points Concept Map Create a concept map or idea web that details how World War I changed life on the
homefront for different groups of people in the US. Consider women, people of color, and immigrants.

____/15 points Sports Research how World War I impacted sports in the US. Consider at least two different sports.
This can be shared in a presentation (Prezi, Slides, PowerPoint, iMovie, etc.), or 2-3 page written response.

____/15 points WWI in Song Locate five (school appropriate) songs that have been written about American
experiences in WWI. Create a playlist that can be shared (YouTube, Spotify, etc.) of these songs. Write a brief
explanation (1 paragraph each), detailing the message of the songs and any other relevant information about the
songs. Be sure to include citations for all resources used.

____/15 points WWI in Art Locate five works of (school appropriate) art that have been created to discuss US
involvement in WWI. Create a digital gallery that can be shared (Prezi, Google Slides, iMovie, etc.). Write a brief
explanation (1 paragraph each), detailing the message of the artists and any other relevant information about the
pieces youve selected. Be sure to include citations for all resources used.

____/15 points WWI in Literature Locate a novel or graphic novel that has been written to about the American
experience during WWI. Create a video or digital gallery that can be shared (Prezi, Google Slides, iMovie, etc.)
about the novel. Include a brief explanation (1 minute in video or 1 written page attached to gallery), detailing the
any relevant information about the story youve selected. Be sure to include citations for all resources used.

____/15 points WWI Newsreel Create a 2-3 minute newsreel about 2-3 issues relevant to Americans during WWI
(i.e., American battle successes, American involvement before entering the war, women in the workforce, food or
fashion during the war, etc.). Be sure to record this in the style of early twentieth century newsreels.

____/15 points Battle (Trench Warfare) Diorama Create a diorama of a WWI battle involving Americans. Include
a two-paragraph explanation about the significance of the battle, including who was involved, where it was located,
and when it occurred.

____/20 points Talk Show You will write a script for a television or radio talk show and film or perform (at least 6
minutes of content) where you will conduct an interview with a representative of a country (political/military) OR
someone closely affected by the war (i.e., lost a son/husband, spent time on the front). You should discuss
important issues and remain relevant to the issue. For this project you may work with ONE other person. Be sure
to include citations for all resources used.

____/20 points Political Cartoon You will find or create a political cartoon that has to do with American
involvement in World War I. You will write at least a paragraph describing the cartoon and explaining what each
of the symbols mean (this includes who the people are). Be sure to include citations for all resources used.

____/20 points Documentary/Film Review Locate a documentary or film based on real events (at least 70
minutes). Watch and review the film. Which issue/topic is discussed? What makes it successful in teaching about
the topic/issue? What is the overall tone/bias in the film? Does it include archival footage, recreations, or both?
What is the effect on the viewer? If this film is the only information a person has over this event, will it accurately
demonstrate the most important information about the movement (you may need to do research to answer this)?
Who would you recommend this film to (be specific -- dont say anyone or nobody). Explain your responses to
each of these questions clearly. This should be at least one complete page.

____/20 points: Biography Select a notable American leader in World War I. Research his/ her life. What is most
important about this leader? Consider his/her ROLE in the war. Include any personal information relevant to that
role. Write 2-4 pages about this person OR create a 2-3 minute video about his/her contributions to the war. Be
sure to include citations for all resources used.

____/20 points Comparison You will create a presentation/documentary or write a paper comparing two
experiences during WWI. They must be over the SAME ISSUE (i.e., living in the German trenches vs. the American
trenches; fighting on different fronts; life on the homefront in US vs. Austria-Hungary). You will include a clear
explanation of the issue, the differences between the two, the leaders and people involved in each, the outcomes of
each experience, and any other significant information related to the topic you choose. Be sure to include citations
for all resources used.

A-Layer Project Options (Turn in on the Classroom when completed.):

____/20 points Essential Question Essay Compose an essay that will answer one of the essential questions of this
unit. This essay must consist of at least five good paragraphs (intro with thesis, 3-5 body paragraphs, and
conclusion). This must be typed and submitted on the Classroom.

What actions could the United States have taken to avoid direct involvement in World War I? (Standard 1)
Did the threat of foreign philosophies (Communism, Socialism, Marxism, and Anarchism) justify government
action in the World War I and post-World War I eras? (Standard 2)
Why did events from World War I lead to a powerful isolationist sentiment in the United States? (Standard 3)
How influential was the United States on the World stage after World War I? (Standard 5)

____/30 points World War I Museum Visit Visit the National World War I Museum in KCMO. Take photos of the
images, maps, and items that most interest you, including a selfie in front of the museum or at the top of the tower.
Then, choose ten images from those youve taken. Create a poster, video, or slideshow and include a brief written
summary of its importance to WWI, as well as why you selected it.

____/30 points WWI Game Based on what youve learned about WWI, create a turn-based game (board, cards, etc.)
to walk people through the WWI history/experience. Assume the players know nothing of WWI and it is up to you
to ensure they know what is most important (people, places, events, etc.). Game on!

____/30 points Women in the Great War Research the various roles of women in WWI, both on the homefront and
overseas. Narrow your focus to 1-3 roles or people. You will write an short paper (3-5 pages) or create a
