Reading and writing strategies are provide opportunities for all students to enable read,

write, listen, and even speak in a various contexts. These strategies also provide the writers with

ways of organizing lessons and student work, and also encourage students to keep the

accountability of all their work. Despite the fact that most of these strategies are designed in a

way that they should be used in a balanced literacy program, they can easily be adapted by

someone so as to meet their most urgent program needs.

From the research I did during this work, I found that Free-writing is a valuable prewriting

technique. This research has made me to learned that there are many benefits that are associated

with free-writing due to its ability to act as a tool that helps students to overcome writers block. As it

worked for me choosing importance of learning English as my essay topic, the exercise of free-

writing can help students to choose a topic to focus on, with the purpose of taking a topic and inject

as many ideas concerning the topic over a given period of time.

Essay topic: Importance of learning English

English is a language that spoken worldwide apart from being the official language of the

United States, England, and Australia. Learning English is associated with various advantages,

even though it is a challenging process. The idiosyncrasies that are involved in learning English

makes it appear to be the most difficult language to learn. Despite the difficulties, the wealth of

the information and the opportunity that learning English opens to a person makes it worth

undergoing the process. These information and opportunities include:

Travelling

In a situation where one needs to travel abroad, knowing English is an essential asset.

Someone who is visiting the United States, English, and Australia will greatly benefit from

learning English since he/she will easily have a medium of communication while in these

countries whose official language is English. Since English is used as an auxiliary language in

other nations, it will be good for traveler to acquaint him/herself with this all purpose language to

enable him/her travel around the globe. The popularity of English worldwide makes it a

necessary tool for the traveler to communicate in it even if it is just on a basic level.

Academics

Many academic works are done and published in English, the language that is also

spoken in many prestigious schools globally. Inability to speak fluent English will bar anyone

who intends to further his/her study in the western countries from achieving his/her academic

goals due to English language barrier. English language does not only open up to the entire

research journal, but also to the wide range of scholars who are English speakers.

Information and Communication

English is the major deal of material in the internet today. Anyone who is not well

conversant with English will not be able to properly access and use this great important

resource of information. Anyone who is unable to speak in English will not easily

communicate to thousands of people who are socializing in the social media. It should be

noted that despite the existence of other languages that are also used in the social

internet, English language dominates, and the fluency in this language opens up the

information world, and enable one to communicate.

Learning English is however met with challenges which make it not easy as we are

going to be discussed in this paper. The disadvantage of learning English according to

this paper is

English is difficult to learn.

This is the main disadvantage of learning English. It requires a lot of

memorization since there different words that are spelt differently but sound the same. In

English, there are also many which bear the same meaning; hence it is difficult for

someone to choose which word to choose when communicating. The meaning of a given

sentence can be changed by stressing some words, something that is not common with

other languages. Sometimes, students consider it a nightmare to acquaint themselves with

English as a second language. A lot of commitments is needed in learning how to speak

English language even though there many options are available for studying English

language and increasing its fluency.

The two prewriting strategies identified and used in this paper, are free-writing and

looping, and brainstorming.

Free-writing and looping

As a scholar, I want to describe free-writing as a process that is applied in generating a lot

of information by a non-stop writing. This prewriting strategy, free-writing allows one to direct

his/her focus on a specific topic. However, this strategy forces writers to write so quickly that

they cannot get opportunity of editing any of their ideas. Having described Free-writing, I will in

this paper describe Looping as a free-writing technique that allows the writers to keep focusing

their ideas into trying to discover a writing topic. A writer loops one 5-10 minute free-writing,

one after another, and so, the writer has a sequence of free-writings, where each are more

specific compared to the other. Free-writing and looping have the same rules that apply to both

of them. These rules are, write quickly, do not edit, and do not stop.

In the above essay, I applied the free-writing strategy in generating the ideas concerning

the topic. While applying this strategy, I wrote faster to avoid forgetting the points without

editing them. After finishing free-writing, I then got time to review my work where I edited the

ideas of the topic I came generated.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming can be best described as a group of creative techniques that helps in

combining efforts in finding a conclusion to a given problem. This is done by randomly

gathering a list of available ideas as contributed by members.

In writing the essay, I applied brainstorming technique to select the best essay topic to put

paper after comparing all the possible topics where I came out with the topic, the importance of

learning English

While writing my essay, I found that between the two strategies, free-writing and looping,

and brainstorming, I found that brainstorming was a hectic process since one cannot brainstorm

alone and instead must have a discussion to effectively brainstorm. It is therefore very

appropriate to conclude that free-writing and looping is the best strategy in my essay since it

came out automatically.
