COURSEDESCRIPTION
ThisisanintroductorylanguagecourseforthosewithoutanybackgroundintheArabiclanguage.Arabicisoneof
therichestandoldestlivinglanguagesoftheworld,spokenbynearlythreehundredmillionpeopleinapproximately
thirtycountriesinWestAsiaandNorthAfrica.Becauseofitsreligiousandculturalsignificance,ithasbeenwidelyused
inthewholeIslamicworldduringthepastfourteenhundredyears.TheQuran,ahadith(theProphetstraditions)and
adiverseandextremelyrichbodyofreligiouswritingsinArabicmakethelanguageparticularlyattractivetoMuslims.
Ontheotherhand,theveryeleganceofArabicliteraturethatevolvedduringalongspanofnearlyfifteenhundred
yearsmakesitappealingtoallthoseinterestedincomparativeliteratureandhistory.NotonlyisArabiconeofthesix
major international languages used officially by the UNO, it is almost universally offered in most prestigious

universitiesintheWestaswellasinuniversitiesinotherpartsoftheworld.
Because of the historical and cultural connections of Pakistan with the Near East and its close geographical
proximity with the Arab world, Arabic has and continues to influence the life, regional histories and cultures of
Pakistan.Itisthereforeespeciallysignificantforourstudents.

Tohelpstudentsacquirebasicskillsinreading,writingandunderstandingArabic.
SinceArabicvocabulariesformamajorcomponentofUrdu,Punjabi,Sindhi,Pashtu,Baluchiandmostof
theotherlanguagesofPakistan,thiscoursewillgreatlyhelpstudentsachievefurtheradvancementin
Urduandotherregionaltongues.
Tohelpstudentsdevelopatasteforfurthergloballiteraryandlinguisticinquisitiveness.
Toexpandtheculturaloutlookofstudentsastheylearnaforeignlanguage.
