Name: Due Dates: Friday, Week 7

Task: Critical Analysis of Macbeth Advertisements

Description:

You are to compare three Macbeth advertisements.

Two of which are of your choice from the advertisements below. The third, is the compulsory
advertisement (taken from the performance we will be seeing at the state theatre).

You must:
1. Annotate each advertisement separately (all three). Identify the persuasive techniques used,
strategic use of colour and the target audience.

2. You must then write a 600 word summary that compares and contrasts the differences and
similarities between the three advertisements. Use the following questions to guide your
summary:

Picture/graphics
o What picture or graphics have been used?
o Why do you think the designer chose this image? What is the purpose of the image/s? What
effect does it have?
o What colour scheme is used, and why?

Text
o What text is used? Comment on the amount of text and the language that is used. What
written text is included in the advertising (giving examples e.g. prices, the name of the
store/business, the name of the product, etc.)
o What is the advertisers purpose in choosing the type of language? Comment on persuasive
techniques.

Context
o Where would you find this advertisement/s
o Why do you think the advertisers chose to place their ad in this particular place?

Audience
o What demographic (ie type of person) is the ad aimed at? How do you know?
o How effective you think the advertisement is in communicating its message to its target
audience?

Purpose
o What is the overall purpose of your chosen ad? Make sure you include a summary of its
emotional appeal for the reader.

How the advertisement makes you (the consumer) feel?

What message you think the advertisement is trying to communicate to consumers about the
product or service its advertising and why you think this?
