Getting Started Guide
This sec5on is suitable for a 30-45 minute mini-lesson. During this lesson, students
will take notes in order to learn the vocabulary and basic processes of that standard.
This lesson should be followed up with prac5ce, prac5ce, and more prac5ce!
Only the interac5ve notebook pages are included. Sample problems for teachers to
model with are included. Extra prac5ce problems are not included. You can pull
problems from your textbooks, test prep booklets, or student workbooks.
Dont forget to read the lesson 5ps and vocabulary words to prepare for the lesson! I
include insights into how to best teach the standard, as well as how it may lead into

Lesson Tips

Whole number and decimal place value is an important
precursor to the other NBT standards. Students need to
understand that each place value is 10 5mes the size. The visuals
in this lesson give students a concrete example of what each
place value looks like.

Begin with the frac5on strips, showing one whole strip and
one tenth strip. Students should no5ce that one tenth and
1/10 are the same, rela5ng decimals and frac5ons. This
rela5onship connects to the NF standards students will learn
later in the year.

Next, construct the ap book by Vocabulary

Discuss how as we move through
each place value, the picture gets 10
5mes smaller.

Op5onal: Use the number line to
show one whole and one tenth.
Students will be working with number
lines and frac5ons this year.
