Reward Chart My 2017 Journal

Reward Chart is a powerful tool that can motivates a pupil, especially in primary schools. It
can improve their behaviour, complete their homework and do their chores. In other words,
this reward chart provides a strong incentive to modify their behaviour. It helps the pupils
understand to behave well than to misbehave.

My school started using reward chart since 2015 and I found out that the pupils were getting
better in their behaviour, thus promoting better performance in their learning. They initially
started behaving well in order to get stickers on their chart, pleased their parents and teachers.
They wanted to be praised and complemented so that they would get the reward of stickers
for being good or had completed their tasks.

The use of reward chart can promote and encourage good behaviour to pupils especially to
those who are less motivated. Teachers can emphasis on the pupils good behaviour instead of
focusing on their bad behaviour. Eventually, they will set limits for themselves and want to
behave well. In my school, the teachers had been relying on the pupils intrinsic motivation to
encourage them to come to school, do their homework, and focus on classroom activities. The
teachers used the reward chart as their tool to instil motivation to their pupils, in order to
focus on their learning, and it was not surprising as some of our pupils had been successfully
achieved their goal by passing their examinations with good results. Not only that, a few had
participated in competitions at the state level and proved their ability by becoming the
champion.

Its not always what you see, as the saying goes. Using the reward chart may takes time to
reveal the pupils performance progress. Be patient to let all information and knowledge
reveal itself at the perfect time. Although it takes time but the results surely satisfy our goal.
Placing a star or sticker on the chart can remind the teachers to praise their pupils. This will
send a message to the pupils that they are being rewarded for having good behaviour. In turn,
they will become more motivated and want to do better. I saw that the pupils enjoyed when
they were intrinsically or extrinsically rewarded and wanted more challenging tasks.
Sometimes the teachers gave gifts and presented during the schools assembly or tokens
during the teaching lessons.

The reward chart can be displayed in the classroom. This will promote the pupils behaviour
in the class. When they see their chart with the number of their stickers, they will be
positively motivated. The teachers are able to concentrate on lesson content and interactive
activities to indulge pupils in learning. My school has been using this strategy as my school
was selected as one of the pioneer school for the 21st Century learning in 2015. The pupils
gave full effort when doing their class projects, school assignments, classwork and various
tasks. Through a reward system that we had been using, they showed interest and increased
participation in everyday classroom duties and responsibilities. Motivating the pupils to learn
was our part of challenge that we faced when teaching content and giving rewards resulted
well in more effort on the part of the pupils.

Reward Chart can encourage productive learning both in school and at home. Rewarding
pupils for completed projects or homework assignments can promote a grasp of the lesson.
The rewards that they get tend to create a feeling of pride and achievement among them thus
motivating them to be more productive. A Teacher takes a Hand, opens a Mind and touches
a Heart.
