You will be allocated a listed Australian
company.

Key deliverables
1. summary of the companys activities and strategies.
2. (a) Identify the key accounting policies relevant to the companys success or lack of it; (b) Identify
the accounting standards and rules which apply in respect of these accounting policies
3. flexibility in key accounting policies
4. accounting strategy for each key accounting policy and suggest/identify possible incentives behind
the choice of strategy.
Remember that this is an accounting assignment; you should not spend too much time discussing business
strategy unless it relates to the companys accounting strategy. By accounting strategy, we mean the
approach taken by the company in preparing its financial statements. This approach involves accounting
policy choices, accounting estimates and accounting disclosure choices.
5. Evaluate the quality of the disclosure made in the accounts
6. Identify potential questionable accounting numbers
7. Attempt where possible to undo distortions in the numbers provided using footnote disclosures and
other information in the annual report
8. Summarise any financial press discussion of the companys performance and accounting numbers.
Items 1, 7 and 8 must be addressed to ensure that the report is comprehensive, but marks will be given
primarily for your performance in items 2-6.

Weeks 2-4: You should form groups of 3-6 people
End of W4: Let us know (fra@uts.edu.au) if you
have not managed to find a group.
Week 5: We assign companies to groups.
Week 6+: You may start
Week 12: Submission, presentation at
the start of week 12 classes.
Within 1 day of your presentation:
submit case study to TurnItIn

1) Students form groups with students from other
classes.
You must do your presentation in the class attended by
the largest number of your members.
2) Groups of 3-6 must be formed; completing this
assignment individually is not an option.
3) As an incentive to contribute, the group may be
broken up by a majority at any time up to 00:00am on
6th of October. The staff on this subject will not be
able to make any special arrangements for you if you
find yourself without a group after this date.
