Question Answer Mark
Number
1(d) For 3 marks, there will be one benefit identified
and two clearly identifiable linked strands of
AO1=1 explanation between the statements. These
AO3=2 may contain connective words such as, this
leads to, because etc.

2(c) For 3 marks, one advantage will be identified
and there will be at least two clearly
AO2=2 identifiable linked strands of explanation. These
AO3=1 may contain connective words such as, this
leads to, because etc. The explanation
must be in the context of Soap and
Glory/cosmetics if it is to secure all three
marks.
7
Question Answer Mark

2(d) For 4 marks, the description will make up to
four relevant points (linked or separate)
AO1=1 associated with the negative impact of Soap
AO2=1 and Glory promoting their products. Four marks
AO3=2 could also be achieved through a consideration
of one or two points plus sufficient
development of each. One mark can be
awarded for a definition of promotion.

Question Indicative content
Number
4(d) The aim here is for candidates to make a judgement as to
whether increase promotion (option 1) or improve the
AO2=2 product (option 2) is more effective in allowing Dyson to
AO3=4 extend the product life cycle. There is no right or wrong
answer and the candidate can argue that either option is
better, depending on the circumstances. Candidates might
consider the following possible ideas as part of their
answer:
14
Level Mark Descriptor
No 0 Non-rewardable material.
mark
Level 1-2 A judgement or point is given as to which method is more
1 likely to allow Dyson to extend the product life cycle of its
DC54 vacuum cleaner. If there is just a simple judgement
or where the support shows misunderstanding 1 mark
should be awarded. If this judgement/point has some
simple support, the response should be placed at the top of
this level.
Level 3-4 A judgement/point is given on one or both issues with some
2 development/support, which includes at least one
reason/cause/consequence etc. At the top of this level this
analysis will be relevant and linked to the judgement/point
made.
Level 5-6 A judgement/point is given on one or both issues with some
3 development/support, which includes at least two
reasons/causes/consequences etc. and includes some
balance.

5(a) Qualitative market research is the collection of
non-numeric information that includes opinions
AO1=2 and judgements.

5(c) For 3 marks, there will be one impact identified
and two clearly identifiable linked strands of
AO2=2 explanation between the statements. These
AO3=1 may contain connective words such as, this
leads to, because etc. The explanation
must be in the Travelodge/hotel
construction/environment context if it is to
secure all three marks.
17
Question Answer Mark
Number
5(d) This question has a 2 x 4 mark split. There is
one mark for identifying an advantage and one
AO1=2 mark for identifying a disadvantage to
AO2=2 Travelodge. The remaining three marks are for
AO3=4 the explanation which should develop the
advantage/disadvantage to Travelodge. Within
the answer there should be at least three
clearly identifiable strands of explanation.
These may contain connective words such as,
this leads to, because etc. The explanation
for both the advantage and disadvantage must
be in context if it is to secure all four marks.
E.g.
Advantage: Managers will be more motivated
(1 mark).

Question Indicative content
Number
*6(c) The aim here is for candidates to consider the usefulness of
break-even analysis to a hotel company such as
QWC Strands Travelodge. The question has the command word assess,
(i), (ii) and so the candidate must develop some evidence of balance
(iii) within their answer. This could take the form of considering
the extent to which break-even analysis could be useful.
AO2=4 Assessment could also be developed by suggesting that
AO3=4 hotels such as Travelodge operate in a competitive market
so variables, such as the price of each room, can change.
This reduces the usefulness of break-even analysis to
Travelodge. An alternative route to attaining assessment
marks could come through the consideration of the
drawbacks of break-even analysis e.g. the assumption that
all the hotels rooms can be sold regardless of the price.
22
Level 3-5 Candidate will consider one factor relating to the usefulness
2 of break-even analysis with more detailed development
bottom of level.

3 ethical behaviour would be beneficial to Zara. A judgement
is given with some development which includes at least
two reasons/causes/consequences etc. for each point and
should include some comparison/judgement as to
which point is more important/evidence of balance.
27
Question Indicative content
Number
*10 The aim here is for candidates to make a judgement as to
whether Just In Time (JIT) is important in allowing Zara to
QWC Strands remain competitive. To demonstrate the evaluative skill,
(i), (ii) and candidates could consider the importance of JIT relative to
(iii) other methods of stock control that Zara could adopt. For
instance, candidates may consider that JIT is critical since
AO2=4 Zara is not then left with clothing that has gone out of
AO3=6 fashion. Other candidates may suggest that other factors
such as the quality of the clothes, ethical responsibility and
promotion etc. are much more important in allowing Zara
to remain competitive. Some candidates may link JIT to the
clothing product and state that JIT is important since it
allows Zara to produce fashionable clothes far quicker than
competitors. There is no right or wrong answer to this
question, but candidates should aim to make a judgement
which is supported and balanced. Candidates may consider
the following ideas as part of their answer:
28
Level 5-7 Candidate will consider two reasons/causes/consequences
2 to support point(s) bottom of level.
