Division Seminar-Workshop on

The Teaching of Mathematics in the K to 12 Curriculum

A Brief Lesson Plan

in
MATHEMATICS 10

MEASURES OF POSITION
(QUARTILE UNGROUPED DATA)

Presented and demonstrated by:

MARY JOYCE B. AUSTRIA

Teacher III
Batac National High School

Mariano Marcos Memorial Elementary School

May 15, 2015
I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson at least 75% of the students should be able to:
1. solve quartile value of an ungrouped data;
2. interpret the meaning of the computed quartile value; and
3. practice accuracy and mental alertness in computing quartile value.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Quartile of an Ungrouped Data

References: Mathematics Learners Module, pp. 364 370
MSA Statistics and Probability, pp. 58 59
Materials: power point presentation, activity sheets, marker and white board

III. Procedure

A. Motivation
Give the Activity 1 to the students
Have students act out the logic problem:
Five students are standing in line. Loida is not the last. Tonette is directly
ahead of Angie. Jay-jay has a girl directly in front of him and directly behind
him. Jezlyn is not last. Jay-jay is somewhere ahead of Angie. Name the students
in order from first to last.

B. Presentation of the Lesson

The other students will categorize the arranged students based from the
characteristic that the teacher will instruct them.

C. Development of the Lesson

Discussion on the definition of measures of position and quartile.
Measures of Position
- are techniques that divide a set of data into equal groups
- the different measures of positions are quartile, decile and
percentile
Quartile
- are the three values of the variable that divide an ordered data
set into four equal parts

Presentation on the different methods on how to compute quartile value of an

ungrouped data.
a. Method 1
b. Mendenhall and Sincich Method
c. Linear Interpolation
Reinforcement
Give Activity 2 (Different activities for different group of learners to
adhere Differentiated Instruction.)
*Note that the students were assessed already based on their level of learning.

Let the students discuss their outputs.

IV. Evaluation

Solve for Q1, Q2 and Q3. Interpret your answer.

The following data give the accumulated number of hours spent by 18 students of Grade
10 Einstein in doing their assignments and projects last week:

Student No. of Hours Student No. of Hours

A 7 I 18
B 9 J 15
C 7 K 9
D 10 L 8
E 12 M 3
F 5 N 13
G 11 O 8
H 11 P 9

V. ASSIGNMENT

A. Observe around your community. Make a problem involving quartiles based from
what you have observed. Solve your own problem.
B. Answer the following questions?
1. What is grouped data?
2. How to solve for the quartile of a grouped data?
ACTIVITY 2
(Group B)
Instructions:

1. On top of the circle, write the name of your members. (One circle per member).
2. Ask the height of your group mates in inches and write their responds in their corresponding
circle. (1 in = 2.54 cm)
3. Compute Q1, Q2 and Q3. (Use another sheet of paper for the solutions.)
4. Interpret the results.

ACTIVITY 2
(Group A)
LETS SOLVE!

Instructions:

1. Use the following formulas in solving for Q1, Q2 and Q3.

Q1 = (n + 1) Q2 = (n + 1) Q3 = (n + 1)

2. Interpret the results.

Problem number 1.
Find Q1, Q2 and Q3 given the scores of five students in Mathematics activity.

ACTIVITY 2
(Group C)

Instructions:

1. Look at inside the classroom or within the school.

2. Think of a possible application of quartile.
3. Make a problem out of it.
4. Solve the problem and interpret the answer.
5. Discuss your output in the class.
