1. (a) What is the role of Modulation and Demodulation in a communication system? [5]
(b) Write the advantage of digital communication. [2]
(c) Differentiate the different modes of transmission. [3]

2. (a) Explain the shot Noise and write the formula to find the diode noise. [5]

(b) An antenna has a noise temperature of 15K and is connected to a receiver which has an [5]
effective noise temperature of 180K, a mid band gain of 100dB and a noise bandwidth
of 1.2MHz. Calculate the available noise power at the receiver output.

3. (a) Derive a noise temperature when amplifiers are connected in cascade. [5]

(b) A mixer stage has a noise figure of 20dB and this is preceded by an amplifier that has a [5]
noise figure of 9dB and an available power gain of 15dB. Calculate the overall noise
figure referred to the input.

4. (a) Establish the relationship between antenna current and the radiated power in DSBFC AM [5]
System by deriving AM mathematical expression.

(b) Contrast Amplitude Modulation and Frequency Modulation. [5]

5. (a) Illustrate the generation of SSB by Weavers Method and asses its merits over the Filter [5]
Method.

(b) A 30MHz carrier is modulated by a 500Hz audio sine wave. If the carrier voltage is 5V [3]
and the maximum deviation is 15KHz, write the equation of this modulated wave for
i) FM and ii) PM. If the modulating frequency is now changed to 4 KHz, all else
remaining constant, write a new equation for iii) FM and iv) PM

(c) A broadcast radio transmitter radiates 10 kilowatts (10 kW) when the modulation [2]
percentage is 60. How much of this is carrier power?

7. (a) Describe automatic gain control with neat diagram. [4]

by its samples what is the minimum sampling rate from (a) low pass sampling theorem
consideration and (b) band pass consideration?

8. (a) Discuss how signal transmission and reception takes place in adaptive delta modulation [5]
system.

(b) Explain the PWM with neat block diagram and required wave forms. [5]

9. (a) Explain with neat diagram super heterodyne receiver in FM. List its advantages over other [5]
conventional receivers.

(b) What are the different types of distortion arises in diode detectors?. How do you eliminate [5]
the distortion in diode detector?

10. Describe the Foster Seeley discriminator method for retrieving the message signal. [10]

11. a) Draw the block diagram of a single transponder channel of a typical satellite and explain [5]
each block.

b) Explain with neat diagram, the basic model of a spread spectrum. [5]

12. (a) With a block diagram, explain the transmission and reception of optical communication. [5]
