Tutors should ask questions which stimulate student thinking


and help students begin questioning for themselves.

Logic help the student tie it all together.
Significance help the student see the importance.

The Next Best Question
Every explanation or solution you offer, should be followed
by questions to the student:
Those that encourage the student to start thinking:
Where do you think we should start?
What do you think the definition is?

Those that determine how well the student understands


what you covered:
Can you solve this other problem now?

Helpful Questioning
Those that invite the student to think:
Whats the new concept/skill in this problem?
How is this problem like the others we did?

Those that ask the student to recall information that


can be used as a tool:
What do you need to know to figure this out?

Those that help the student become aware of


his/her thought process:
What strategy are you using to solve this?
What do you need to remember to solve this type of problem?

Opening and Follow-up Questions
Those that help the tutor figure out the students study
habits/skills:
Did the professor cover this in class? Lets review your notes.
Did your read this in the text? Lets look at your study notes.

Forces students to recall, use and process information
Breaks the passive listening pattern & forces engagement
Makes students verbalize what and how they think
Allows tutors to see if their approach works and make changes
