My Best Pal
Close friendships are hard to come by these days. In an ever-changing world with
people striving to achieve their interpretation of preordained success, it is hard to know
who your true friends are. Fortunately, I found my best pal early at the tender age of
seven. We were both enrolled at the same school and were at wits ends as we
searched tirelessly for our designated classes.
Samantha and I got acquainted as both of us were in the same class and sat next to
each other. Samantha was a happy-go-lucky girl who always managed to breathe fresh
air into the sometimes arid classroom. She always knew what to say and would voice
them at the best possible moments. Both pupils and teachers alike enjoyed her
company and liveliness. There was hardly ever a dull moment when she was around
with her funny quips and expressions.
Samantha was born with a silver spoon. Her father was a businessman and her mother
owned and ran a boutique. Both her parents were very caring towards her as she, just
like I, was the only child of the family. Samantha came to school each day with a
perpetual smile. She was a very nice person to be around with. She and I used to go
everywhere together and both of us were rarely seen apart. We used to talk about so
many things as we walked, thoroughly enjoying our time together.
One day, I went to school and forgot to ask my parents for lunch money. At first, I was
not hungry and thought I could bear going without a meal but soon, my stomach began
to growl. Without asking, Samantha generously paid for my meal and drinks during
recess. The incident revealed to me how lucky I was to have such a caring and
compassionate friend.
As time went on, people started teasing us as we were spending more and more time
together. We seemed to know what each other thought and we cared for each other
deeply. Was I in love with her? I did not know then and we both knew we were too
young for all that emotional roller coaster.
Currently, Samantha and I are studying at different schools. It was hard to be apart at
first, but technology in the form of instant messaging and e-mails have helped to bridge
the gap in our friendship. I sincerely wish our friendship will never end as it would be
equivalent to waking up from a beautiful dream.
My Favourite TV Programme
The television (TV) is part and parcel of many households. Therefore, watching
television is a culture of todays modern society. It is a favourite past-time of many
people, cutting across the culture, creed, gender and age. I must admit that I too enjoy
sitting glued to the TV as mum often laments. Since I watch TV whole day long, I dont

I also enjoy watching the National Geographic because it is entertaining, interesting and
stimulating. I never imagined that such an educational programme can be very
enjoyable. I get a chance to enjoy the kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and colours of the
world and its different peoples, all in the comfort of my own home.
In addition to that, this programme is of very high quality and it is produced by a team of
experts, all are authorities in their own field of interest. The photographic footage is
extremely breath-taking and inspiring. Besides, the narration is very accurate,
informative, vivid and descriptive. Thus, I have never felt restless, distracted or bored
watching this programme.

The modern society consists of more people than it did in the past. These people are of
various cultural, racial, religious and professional backgrounds. It therefore requires
great powers of endurance and abilities of mixing with people. Good manners enable
one to tolerate the disagreeable attitudes of others to a great extent. They also help to
promote friendship among the people around.
If one has good manners, that person is respected by those who associate with him or
her. Having good manners, however, does not mean that being polite, understanding,
and sympathetic when not only outside but also inside his or her home. There are many
people who are very kind and polite to people outside their homes, but within their own
homes they are worse than the devil himself. Such people do not really have good
manners.
Having good manners means being good to others. Our speech and habits as well as
our behavior should not hurt the feelings of others or cause them any inconvenience.
We should not also talk ill about others or boast about our achievements or personal
possessions. We must not laugh at the weaknesses and failures of others. Further, if we
are angry we must try to use words in such a way that others are not offended.
If we have all these qualities, we will have more friends and well-wishers. We will also
have less trouble from others, and those who associate with us will also learn how to
behave well. In this way, our good manners will help to spread better understanding and
good-will among others. Thus, we can live a happier life. It is for all these reasons that
we should have good manners.
The night market begins when the vendors arrive in the late afternoon. More and more
goods laden vans arrive to begin a brisk day of business. Most of the vendors busily set
out to set up their stalls respectively in order to get ready for a brisk day of business.
The sun gradually sets and the night market picks up momentum. More cars and vans
are arriving. By now, the stalls are neatly and strategically arranged to entice their
customers. There is an assortment of goods sold ranging from food, toys and clothes, to
name a few. A variety of goods is sold at low prices.
Large rainbow-coloured parasols are used to shade the people from rain and shine. A
concoction of blaring music can be heard in the night market background amidst the
constant shouting. It is an amazing kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, smells and colours.

The night market is known as a haven by local gourmets who can enjoy various kinds
of mouth-watering local cuisine. Still more people arrive, they come from all walks of life,
mingling freely and harmoniously. Crowds are walking up and down in an endless
stream. Some of them are stopping by the stalls and haggling before making purchases.
Little children tag along, amused and excited. Sprinklings of tourists join in to
experience the lifestyle of typical Malaysian folks.
When night falls, lighted lamps brighten up the place, they add gaiety to this
atmosphere, and it is like a funfair. The night wears on and the traffic of people recedes.
Vendors get a chance to rest their weary legs besides bantering with each other.
By 10.00 pm, all the stalls call it a day. The vendors pack up and close the van doors.
One by one, they leave, leaving behind pieces of papers, plastic bags and discarded
boxes. It us an eyesore! Finally, the night market disappears. The place becomes quite
and still once more.
A Road Accident
Road accidents are reported in newspaper and on television every day. There
are more frequently caused by reckless drivers rather than faulty vehicles. Last
Saturday, while I was travelling from Ipoh, I witnessed a serious accident. The scene of
the accidents was vivid in my mind.
A motorcyclist was following behind was taxi very closely. He was so impatient
that he was trying to overtake my taxi even near a sharp bend. At that critical moment,
there was an oncoming car. The taxi driver swerved to the roadside and I got a terrible
jolt. It was too late for the motorcyclist to avoid the car. His motorcycle ran against the
bumper of the car and smashed its windscreen. The motorcyclist somersaulted over the
car and was found lying in a pool of blood. It was a scene to chill the flesh! The car
driver, who was cut by the flying glass, was in a state of shock. All that happened in split
second and fear overwhelmed us.
The taxi driver stopped his taxi and I quickly ran to the nearest to the nearest
telephone booth to inform the police and the hospital. From a distance I could see some
people trying to help the injured motorcyclist and the car driver. They carried them into
one of the onlookers car and sent them to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile the taxi
driver tried to control and directs the traffic. Soon the police arrived and they promptly
took some measurements and evidence. After that they moved the damaged car and
the motorcycle to the roadside to ease the traffic congestion. They also took down the
evidence provided by witnesses and onlookers. Some sweepers were clearing the
debris and the blood stains on the road.
When the taxi finally continued the journey, I silently thanked God for my narrow

escape. I learned a good lesson that impatience and recklessness would bring harm
and danger. I was happy to see that Malaysians are public-spirited and they render help
to others readily. Since then I remember and follow the saying more haste less speed
and prevention is better than cure. I believe good road manners and roads safety
campaigns can help to reduce the number of road accidents which cause injuries, loss
and lives and properties.
A Terrifying Experience
"If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble." I muttered to myself
softly.
I crept slowly down the stairs and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was
walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her "dish-washing",
"Where are you going?" I answered back without hesitation, "I'm going to the garden to
play." After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had worked out
fine so far. I scaled the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and
started running towards the bus-stop at top speed.
After half-an-hour, I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and
Bobby. After a while, I spotted them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got
into my swimming trunk. For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was
going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away
from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I decided to get the ball for
them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about
ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from
me, I put in an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to grab the ball, a very
strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed
tangled up with my feet and I could not swim properly.
I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. "If I had listened to mum and dad, this would
never have happened," I thought silently.
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I had no more energy and got pulled
underwater. I tugged at the weed which finally broke. I swam back to the surface,
gasping for breath. I saw two young men in canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted
but I shouted to the men for help. The two men, instead of helping me, ignored me and
raced on. By the time, a lifeguard who was holding a life buoy reached me, I had
already fainted.

When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came
into the room that I realised that I was in a hospital. After a few minutes, my parents with
half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents scolded me for sneaking out of
the house but were also glad that I was not seriously injured.
I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.
When I reached the bus station, it was nearly empty except for a handful of boys.
Mohan and I strode to a bench near the stationmasters office. I could feel the tension
on my shoulders as the straps of my school bag ate into my shoulder. Where is the
bus? I sighed to myself. An elderly woman came and asked me where I was going.
She started a conversation but gave up after my monosyllable answers.
Suddenly, someone shouted and I saw a bus swerved into the station. I got up, thankful
for the chance to escape from the woman. . It was Mohans bus. The group of boys
were jostling each other to get into the bus. Masuk! Masuk! shouted the conductor but
nobody seemed to be moving. The black fumes made me nauseous. All of a sudden,
people started appearing from all directions to board their bus. In no time, the
passengers were packed like sardines in the bus. It started to move, leaving some
unfortunate passengers behind. I waved at Mohan when I noticed him dangling on the
steps of the bus. The bus swerved out of the station again. It left another trail of black
smoke.
I decided to go to Panjangs ice stall. The iced sugar cane juice soothed my parched
throat as I sipped slowly, all the while keeping an eye on the bus. Then I saw the bus
heading towards the station. I paid for my drinks. See you tomorrow, I waved to
Panjang.
Once more, the crowd began to swell near the bus. I noticed that the elderly woman
was being shoved around by the boys. She started hitting them with her umbrella. Then,
I saw Raja, my classmate at the back of the bus. I hurled my bag through the window
and he caught it. By the time I got into the bus, it had already started moving. I got into
my seat and told myself that I must really try to convince my mother about the
motorcycle again.

Dear Zarina,
How's life? I hope you are in the best of health. How's my beloved Uncle Johari? I
miss him too.The reason I write this letter is to tell you about my expedition to Langkawi.
Guess what? We just came back from Langkawi . I went there with 25 of my classmates
and my class teacher. Mr, Zaid had kindlly accompanied us for the 3 day-trip. You
should have joined us. It was such an awesome experience!
Well, on the first day, we arrived at Langkawi in morning after a short flight. Then,
we were taken to Langkawi Geopark, a UNESCO World Heriatage Site where we could
see magnificent rock formations. We were taught the history of the place and some
fossils of fish could also be sighted. This is a wonderful opportunity to understand
geogical aspect of the island at the Geopark.
After visiting Geopark, we were taken to Pulau Dayang Bunting which about an
hour boat ride. I forgot to mention that the boat ride itself was so exciting and
adventurous. Upon arrival at the island, we were greeted by monkeys and soon, we saw
a breathtakinng lake, with its gree clear water. Not forgetting the fish spa where
thousands of catfish nibble at your feet when you lower feet into the water. Again, this is
a new experience for me. Other than that, we could really enjoy the beautiful scenery of
the island.
The next day, we went to Underwater World where we saw the penguin, giant
fishes, colourful onemones and all sorts of marine life there.I'm sure, it's heaven for fish
lovers. One advantage of this trip is I could learn about themarine life. Well, on the final
day, we went to Mahsuri Tomb and Padang Mat Sirat to relive the legend of Mahsuri. It
was a good experience since I managed to see the historic sites and understand
Mahsuri legend better. Other than that, I also learn about the importance of being true to
our words and do not spread false gossips since these can lead to horrible
consequences. I also managed to make friends with some other tourists visiting the site.
Okay, I guess I have to have to pen off now. Hope to see you in the next letter.
Please convey my love and regards to my uncle and aunti. Take care!

When the bell finally rang, we rushed out of our classrooms as if released from prison.
Chattering and yelling to be heard, we all gathered in a corner of the schoolyard to
discuss our plans for the coming weeks. Everyone had something to say.
To begin with, we decided to have a water fight right there and then and did. We got
soaked through and through and got caught by one the school nuns. We were lucky to
escape with a scolding.
My friends decided they were coming to my place and I had to hurriedly phone and
warn my unsuspecting mother. Luckily mom made dozens of hot dogs and French fries
and we had a fun lunch in my room.
After lunch we decided to go to the City Centre to watch the third Harry Potter film. We
got there an hour too soon but had fun all the same checking out the cosmetics shops,
video games outlets and other shops that interested us.
Finally, we bought large bags of popcorn, gigantic paper glasses of cokes and trouped
into the cinema hall. The movie was terrific as expected and when it got over I had to
overcome the urge to see it again.
The day was not over for us, however, as we still had a friend's birthday party to attend.
The only problem was that we had almost run out of money so we pooled together what
we had and bought a gift that all thought was just perfect. Luckily, the birthday girl
thought so too, so that was a relief.
The party turned out to be full of fun and games and we really enjoyed it no end. When
we finally headed our different ways, it was with no regrets. It had been an eventful day
and a full one... the perfect start to the summer holidays.

Without realising, I had rushed to the girls toilet. The prolonged control and an
upset stomach made worse by two glasses of cold milk in the morning made me grunt
and groan in what I thought in what I thought was the privacy of the cubicle. I thought I
heard giggling outside and wondered why the giggles sounded unusually near. A few
minutes later I came out the cubicle and discovered my horror that I had entered the
girls toilet. To make matters worse, the few girls standing outside didnt even turn away
when I came out. Instead they looked down at me, then only they turned quickly away.
Horror of horrors, I had forgotten to zip up! No beetroot could have matched the colour
of my face at this point in time!
They news of my predicament spread like wild fire throughout school. I was truly
the talk of the town. I felt like I could either walk around feeling perpetually self-
conscious and embarrassed or I could turn the situation round, perhaps even to my
advantage. I remembered my mothers words that if you cant beat them, join them. So
I decided to make fun of myself, to laugh at myself too. It works. Everyone got bored
after a while and nobody teased me after that.
It was indeed an eye-opening experience for me. I have learnt that when people
laugh at you, you should laugh along. You must not take yourself seriously. Learn to
look at yourself through other peoples eyes and you will realise that most of the time
when they laugh at you, they just want to have some fun. They mean no harm. If you
can make people laugh, its like bringing sunshine into their lives and as someone said,
those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.

For those who walks to school alone, needs to be companied by the elderly. Besides,
they can also walk in pairs or groups if that makes them feel more safe. Don't ever use
short cuts especially through a dark and quiet place such as the back alleys. This place
is dangerous for girls to pass through it.
Next, you have to be aware with your surroundings. Watch out for any suspicious
person. When you smell anything fishy, immediately inform it to the security guard or
straight forward to the principal. This action, sometimes can scare them away from you.
Dicipline is very important. When you are well diciplined, you will never break any rules
for every place that you'll go. For an example, students who attends to school by bus.
Always queue up before ascending the bus. Patience is needed, because this will
prevent them from pushing other bus users whether they are boarding or alighting the
bus. Thus, for them who attends to school by public or private transport are also the
same. Its just that when you're waiting for your transport to fetch you up, never play on
the road or joke with your friend while crossing the road. This may cause an unexpected
accidents that occurs you or life of anothers.
In a nut shell, students must follow the tips mentioned.Actions speak louder than words.
Therefore, you must ensure that you are always alert whenever you are to and from
school so, that you will stay safe. Like all people said "safety comes first".
The nicotine in cigarettes is a poisonous drug. It even be used to kill insects. Nicotine
and dozens of other poisonous chemicals in tobacco can cause illness like heart
problems and certain kinds of cancer. Some of these illness take years to develop but
others can show up right away.
Generally, smoking makes a teenager's body less fit and more susceptible to infections.
For example, teenagers who smoke are much more likely to get a cold on pneumonia.
Each time they like up, it hurts their heart, lungs and brain. And the longer the smoke,
the worse the damage becomes.
Smoking has such a long list of bads points that wonders why teenagers smoke. Along
with bad breath and stinky hair and clothes, smoking makes it harder to run and to play

sports. It also cause a difficulty for blood to move around in the body.
Smokers often feel tired and cranky and cannot think quickly, not surprisingly, there are
more likely to get in trouble in school and get lower grades. There are also more likely to
lie to their friends or their parents about their activities; what they do and how they
spend their money.Smoking therefore not only brings about health problems but may
also develop undesirable traits. Teen smokers can become lazy, irresponsible and
dishonest.
The second thing I would do is to go on a world tour with my parents. I have never been
overseas but I long to see the places I have only read or dreamt about. First, I would
like to visit Europe, especially Italy, the city of romance. I would visit all the museums
and buildings I have heard so much about. My next stop would be Hong Kong or China.
There is something mystical about China and her people. This would be my dream
come true.
Apart from that, I could finally go on a shopping spree, which is my favourite pastime.
Thus far, I could only go window shopping and if I had a lot of money, I would go into
these stores and buy whatever I fancy. Just imagine that for once in my life, I do not
need to look at the prices of the items that I like. I could just shop till I literally drop. The
salesgirls would be hovering near me with their latest outfits and my wish would be their
command. Ah, I would not be ignored anymore as I walk into their stores!
Besides shopping, I would also remember the poor and the less fortunate. First, I would
certainly build a better home for the orphans in my town. In fact, I would also sponsor
their education till they could stand on their own. They would receive an allowance
monthly and I would definitely take them shopping.
Finally, I would take the opportunity to further my studies. When I was younger, my
parents could not afford to send me overseas. So, I would love to pursue a course in
interior decorating in London and once I graduate, I would like to set up my own
business with the rest of the money. They say that a fool and his money are soon
parted. Thus, I would be very careful with how I spend my money. I would invest my
money with my parents advice and keep some for rainy days.

On 7th September 2011 at 10.30 a.m., I was walking alone Jalan 2/14 which is
next to the childrens playground. As I was about to cross the road to enter the park, I
saw a car driving swiftly down Jalan 4/14. It was a Honda Civic with the number plate
BEH 9110. Another car, a Toyota Vios 1.5 with plate number WHM 4657 came out of
Jalan 4/14 as well. The Honda Civic was driving too fast that make it did not have time
to avoid collision.
The accident caused a loud crash. The Honda Civic hit the Toyota Vios on the
drivers door. The door could not be opened and the driver had to get out from the
passengers door. The driver of the Toyota Vios was lucky as he survived with no
physical injuries. Both air bags popped up when they collided to each other. They both
were fortunate as their car was not badly damaged and dented.
The Toyota Vioss windscreen was shattered to pieces. The Honda Civics headlight
and signal light were smashed. There was plenty of glass on the road. The two drivers
startled to argue. The driver of the Honda City was a woman. They blamed each other
and the argument stopped when her mobile phone rang. Most of the passerby slowed
down their vehicle to watch the accident. Some pedestrian came by and offered help.
As it happened, I ran into my house which is close by. I called the nearest police station
and in ten minutes, a police car drove up. I told the police officer I had witnessed the
accident and offered to come out to the station to give a statement. The cars were
towed to the side of the road first, and then were brought to the police station before to
workshop. Pictures were taken for insurance claim.
In my opinion, the driver of the Honda City is to blame for the accident. She was driving
too fast and did not pay any attention to vehicles coming out from the side road. The
driver of the Toyota Vios should have stopped at the junction.

My Best Friend
Aminah is my best friend in school. She is a fair, pretty girl with dimpled cheeks. She
andI first met at kindergarten and we became great friends. She is kind, jolly and helpful.
We are classmates again this year and we go to school together every morning.
Aminah likes to joke and play games. She lives near my house. In the evenings, we
usually meet at my house. We sit in the garden and read story books. She is good at
Mathematics. So, whenever I find difficulties in my Mathematics homework, I
would ask her to help me. Sometimes, when my parents go out in the evening, she
comes over to keep me company and we watch television together. That way I do
not feel lonely.
I hope Aminah and I will be in the same class again next year. I like her very much
andshe is my best friend.
My Pets
I have two pretty birds as pets. They are green-and-blue budgies. Their home is a
shady tree in the garden where they are free to fly from branch to branch. Yet they are
safe from the cat as the whole tree is inside a wire enclosure. I have nailed a wooden
box on thetree. This is their 'nest' where they sleep at night and where they find shelter
whenever it rains.
My pets are called 'Polly' and 'Sally'. They enjoy flying about among the branches and
they chirp happily all day long. Every morning, I feed them with bird seed and give them
a bowl of water to drink. I also clean their 'nest'.
They are pretty birds and I like to watch their movements. I find them cheery
and lively,so I never feel dull spending my time with them. I love my pets very much.
There were many sections to interest parents and friends who came to see the work
of their children. The painting of nature, Malaysian scenes, flowers and fruits was of an
exceptionally high standard. Other items such as puppets, dolls and articles

of embroidery were admired, too. In the geography section, there were clay models
of physical features like hills, mountains and plateaus set in a natural environment of
green landscape with rivers meandering through the land.
Some articles like flowers made from silk were for sale and ladies readily bought these
items. Our school exhibition was appreciated by all.
I find the stall-holders busy serving food to the students, who are impatient and
sometimes downright rude if the stall-holder is slow in serving them. The chatter
of students, the noise of frying noodles, the chopping up of ingredients and the delicious
smell of food floating in the air contribute to the typical tuck-shop environment which
makes one hungry and eager to eat the daily snack.
R-r-ring! The unwelcome bell goes at 10.50 a.m. for the students to get back to class. It
is another rush, this time for lessons which begin promptly and late-comers will
be punished. Recess time is a welcome break, for hungry stomachs are filled and dry
throats are refreshed with iced drinks.
Now the tuck-shop is quiet except for the clatter of plates, glasses and cups being
washed by the stall-holders, who then rest till the next session.
Teachers' Day
Every year, all schools throughout Malaysia celebrate Teachers' Day - a day to
honour and remember our teachers who are our leaders and who guide us in our
education during our youthful days.
Teachers are very much a part of a student's life as they influence a child, right from
Kindergarten days to Upper Secondary days; and perhaps beyond. It is they who
prepare the child for his or her life in society.
Teachers' Day is held to show our appreciation to our teachers who work hard and
bear patiently with us. In most schools, pupils bring gifts of flowers, presents and other
tokens, which are sometimes hand-made, to show that they care for their teachers.
A party is held where tasty refreshments and drinks are served in the classroom for both
14

the teachers and the students. Everyone has a good time and the day ends earlier than
usual.
Teachers play a very important role in the development of a child. However, their
effortsare seldom appreciated. That is why Teachers' Day is so significant to teachers; it
is only on this day that they are appreciated and honoured for their deeds.
A Squatter Fire
I had never seen a house on fire before, only filmed reports of it on the television. So,
one evening when I heard the siren screams of a few fire-engines rushing past my
house, I dashed into the street and joined a growing crowd of curious people. We could
see the fire only from a safe distance as the police had cordoned off the place for
security reasons. even at a distance, I could recognize that the affected houses were in
a squatter area where my part-time maid, Mani, lived.
What a terrible scene greeted my eyes ! The fire was raging through the shabbily built
houses. Flames leaped up hungrily to devour the wooden sheds. every now and then
tongues of fire would shoot up almost skyhigh, sprinkling bright red sparks of fire about.
Fiery wooden beams crashed and glowed brightly. Thick black smoke spread all around.
Dozens of firemen from the four fire-engines were busily engaged in putting out the
fire. The rushing water from several hoses soaked the houses but it did not seem to
have any effect on the flames. Soon, a few firemen with hoses in their hands were seen
climbing up tall red ladders of the fire-engines. The continuous flooding from the top
finally brought the fire under control. Where it had been red there was only black -- the
charred remains of ruined houses.
While all eyes were transfixed on the inferno, the plight of the victims did not escape the
eyes of the spectators. Firemen were seen dragging wailing women away from
the burning houses to a safe area. Frightened children clutched to their mothers. Some
of the men simply stared speechlessly as they witnessed their homes reduced to ashes.
It took only 30 minutes before the whole squatter area, comprising mainly wooden
houses, was razed to the ground. No one could salvage anything. According to a
reporter, the estimated loss was around 1 million dollars. Although the amount may
seem insignificant to some, for the victims it was all they had. Their only consolation
was the fact that no lives were sacrificed.
Though I watched with great sympathy for the other victims of the fire, my real fear the
concern were for Mani. All this while, I was straining my eyes to catch a glimpse of her.
What a relief when I finally saw her standing with downcast eyes in the midst of
other fire victims. My heart went out to her.

My days were happy ones before I started going to school, as I had good neighbours
to play with from morning till evening. We played games outdoors, dressed as cowboys
and Red Indians and rode about on our tricycles happily. There were also other games
to occupy our time.
At the age of five years, I had to attend kindergarten and this turned out to be quite an
ordeal for me. To begin with, I felt very sad having to leave my mother and go off each
morning to be amongst strangers. I cried and wanted my mother around, much to my
teacher's displeasure. As the days went by, however, I made friends easily in class and
found company. I became happy again and actually looked forward to leaving the house
each morning.
I still remember those days when I was learning to ride a bicycle. I fell and bruised
myself several times but I never gave up. Finally, I was able to join my friends going
around the neighbourhood on my bike.
Another fond memory is the end-of-year concert held at the kindergarten. I was chosen
to play the role of Jack in the play, 'Jack and the Beanstalk', and I became a celebrity
overnight receiving lots of compliments for my performance.
I now realise what a wonderful childhood I have had and at times wish I could relive
those days.

On a dais in front of the hall were two chairs beautifully adorned in satin and silk, with
two velvet cushions for the bridal couple. At about 7.00 p.m., a 'kompang'
group started beating their 'kompangs' and entered the garden. The bridegroom,
dressed in blue 'kainsongket' and looking like a Malay prince, arrived next, his retinue of
young men, and took his place on the dais. Later, the bride, dressed also in blue
'songket kebaya' and 'sarung', arrived looking beautiful. Her jewellery sparkled in the

light. In her hair were sweet-scented flowers and 'bunga goyang' which glistened visibly.
She looked like a princess and sat next to the bridegroom.
Then the 'kadi' said prayers and everyone was ready for the 'kenduri'. The dinner had all
the traditional dishes of 'beriyani', 'kurma', 'dalcha' with salad and' 'rendang'. After a
sweet dessert, a 'Bunga Telur' was presented to each guest. It consisted of an
egg placed in a small, decorated basket with flowers on top. Malay music was played
throughout the function and guests were entertained to some cultural shows.
Then it was time to go home. We had enjoyed a hearty meal, blessed the blissful couple
and were ready to leave the place.
A Frightful Experience
One day, as I was returning home late from school at about 7.30 p.m., I was
Dismayed to discover a group of rough-looking boys following me.
As I quickened my steps, one of them, apparently the leader, obstructed my path and
ordered me to surrender to him my watch and my wallet. At first I resisted, but, when he
threatened to cause me harm, I quickly handed over the items. I felt frightened and, at
the same time, mad, having to part with my possessions as they were of sentimental
value tome. Once they had taken possession of my properties, they laughed and made
their way to a coffee shop nearby while I was left fuming by the road.
At first I wanted to report the incident to the police but, later, I decided against it and
went straight home. I told my parents about it and they concluded that it was unsafe
for me to walk alone. They then arranged for me to go in my neighbour's car and that
solved the problem.
Days before, the women folk make many varieties of cakes, cookies and sweet
meats. They also cook 'rendang' curries and prepare 'satay' to go with the
'ketupat'. Homes are decorated with many coloured lights all over the garden. Small
lamps are lit and placed along the driveway.

On Hari Raya Day, many Malaysians visit their Muslim friends to share their joy. They
receive warm hospitality and are entertained to a feast of specially prepared food. Boys
and girls wear new clothes and shoes. Girls wear jewellery and boys new 'songkoks'.
The town is usually crowded with Muslims dressed gaily and going about. They visit
their friends and relatives while some go to the cinemas or to the Lake Gardens.
Many, however, go back to their 'kampungs' to celebrate the festival with their parents. It
is also a time for family reunions. Everyone rejoices during this festive season.
Things I Like To Do
I like to play games out in the garden. When it rains, I stay indoors and play card games
and scrabble with my family. Alternatively, I indulge in doing jigsaw puzzles. I have
completed several scenes and pictures.
I also like to play with my puppy. It chases me round the garden and barks at me. It has
learnt how to pick up a stick and bring it back to me each time I throw it far off.
Besides this, I like watching my fish and feeding them with worms. They have beautiful
colours and I enjoy following their movements in the water.
Drawing pictures and painting them is another activity I enjoy doing. Reading
story books is my favourite pastime too as there are exciting adventure and mystery
stories to keep me engrossed.
Caning
The rise in discipline problems among students has been related to the lack of respect
students have for teachers. This disrespect appears to be linked to the ban on caning
byc lass teachers. Hence, there has been a call to put the cane back in the teacher's
hand to Instill discipline.
Is it through the fear of caning that students will learn discipline ? Can the cane create
asense of respect for the teacher and the school authority ?
18
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
student's behavior results in increased and more severe punishment until the
punishment can rightfully be termed child abuse. it is often the teachers' mood that
determines the severity of the caning. Caning in other words has become a means to
release the teachers' frustration and anger. This is an abuse of power.
Teachers cannot expect to be respected by their students just because they have been
given the power to cane. Respect is not gained through the power of the cane, but by a
mutual understanding through a close student-teacher relationship. If a teacher carries
out this responsibility well and fairly, and is able to show love and concern, he will be
admired and respected. When such a teacher canes a student, the student will realize
thatis is because the teacher cares. Not only will he regret his misbehavior, but he will
respect the teacher.
The role of parents in training their children to be courteous and to respect adults, must
not be overlooked. How many parents these days respect their children's teachers ? On
top of that, many parents have become over protective. Under such circumstances, how
then do we expect students to respect their teachers ?
Road Safety
Road accidents have been on the increase with more young people
becoming victims. Your school has decided to launch a Road Safety
Week to raise awareness among students of the need to be more
responsible on the road chairperson of the schools organising
committee, you have been asked to give a talk to other students on
road safety.
A very good morning to the Principal of SM Sri Mayang, teachers and fellow
friends. As the chairperson of the schools organizing committee for the
Road Safety Week, I would like to give a talk on some safety tips for the
students. As we know, there has been an increase in the accidents reported
involving students of this school. I hope this talk will raise your awareness to
be more responsible and careful when using the road.
I would like to identify some of the reasons why road accidents occur. First,
speeding beyond the prescribed limits is the main cause. Some drivers not
only speed but also drive recklessly, breaking road rules and beating the
19
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
traffic lights. Moreover, drivers who are tired after long distance driving or
after a long day work, may not be able to concentrate on the road, thus
causing accidents. Youngsters using the road as their racing track is another
cause too. Drivers who do not check and maintain their vehicles often may
be involved in accidents because their vehicle is faulty. Many potholes and
uneven roads which contribute to the poor condition of the road too can
cause accidents.
I hope the short talk that I have delivered have given you some ideas of how
to use the road safely. Thank you for listening
First and foremost, English will definitely help you a lot when you
want to further studies. Almost all books at university are written in English
in all subjects. Plus, it is a compulsory for any candidate to pass English with
credit before entering any universities. So, if you are poor in English, you
will blow you chance for better education or worse, you are going to have a
big problem studying at university.
20
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
The second reason why you have to study English well is that it will
help you to get a job. When you go for a job interview, the interviewer will
surely talk to you in English. The first impression you should give in order to
success and have the job is, to respond in English fluently. Your chances of
getting the job are very slim if you stutter while interviewing.
A good command in of English will also help you greatly in your job.
If the company you work is actively involved in international trade, you have
to speak to prospective customers in English. Miscommunication might occur
if your English is bad. And this will put your company at risk and you will
likely be dismissed if this happen.
Good English will also help you a lot when you travel. Every country
in the world studies English. Even the roadside stall-holders in China speak
fairly good English! At least some of the people you meet on your travels in
other countries can understand English. The language is certainly practical
when you are lost in your trip. Communication problem will not happen if
you can converse well in English. Inevitably, English is one of the languages
used in any airport in the world in making announcement. Knowing English
well, therefore, make travelling overseas easier.
Based from all the above elaboration, I hope that students will see
the importance and realise how importance the language is for their own
future. Although it is a second language in our country, it is now a main
language all over the world.

Wandering around aimlessly looking for anybody, the place seemed weird.
Some crows were flying above me. There was an old building on the waste
land. When I reached the building, a girl tapped me from behind. Liz was
wearing a school uniform. She looked very beautiful as she gestured me
towards the building.
When I got into the building, there were many people. They were wearing
the same uniform as Liz. I realised that it was a school. The students were
going to their classes. Being a new student, Liz brought me to see the
principal. I followed her without saying any word.
In the spacious principals office, I was welcomed by En. Juhair. He told Liz
to bring me to Class A. It was overcrowded. We took our seats at the back
row. Everybody stood up and said Sam! Welcome to Monster School! I was
so shocked to hear that. I could hardly believe my ears and eyes. All of a
sudden, the students and teachers looked like monsters.
Looking closer at Ms. Munirah, I noticed she wore a tail. I had an unpleasant
feeling in my stomach. I turned to face pretty Liz and felt relieved that she
was still the same, she was just smiling. The very thought of this bizzare
place made me feel like running away. Nevertheless, I kept the thought to
myself.
When the school bell rang, I planned my escape route. I couldnt leave LIz
behind and decided to invite her along. She happily agreed to my infamous
plan because she knew that the monsters would kill me for being a human.
We rushed out of school quickly. I showed her the bus station where I got
down in this morning.
Apparently we had been spotted by the monsters. They were trying to catch
us. As we were beginning to feel helpless, fortunately the bus came into the
station. Both Liz and I boarded the bus. It was going at a maddening speed.
Feeling exhausted, I dozed to sleep . When I got up, I was surprised to see a
vacant seat next to me.

The bus driver looked at me with cynical eyes and shook his head

to me, this has been a very shockingly unexplainable experience in my life.
If you have not cultivated a reading habit yet, these are some useful tips to
improve your reading habit. First and foremost, we must have a book
around. Therefore, try to carry a book or any reading material wherever you
go. As the saying goes, armed to the teeth. Subsequently, set aside a
regular time to read. If you are busy in the daytime, during the night time or
before going to bed, you can take a book and read.
In addition to this, visit the library or bookstore. Take time to browse and let
your eyes find things of interest. Last but not least, set a reading goal. Start
with something attainable and stick to it. As your reading habit gradually
improves, you may start to set a higher goal.
Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries and communities. The
medical and psychological effects are very obvious. Addicts cannot function
as normal members of society. They neglect or abuse their families, and
eventually require expensive treatment or hospitalization. The second effect
23

is on crime. Huge police resources are needed to fight smuggling and dealing.
Criminal gangs and mafia underworlds develop with the money from drugs.
However, the menace of drugs can be fought. Education is the first battle.
Children need to be told at home and in school about drugs. People need to
be aware of the effects so that they can make avoid this problem. A second
approach is to increase police manpower and powers to stop dealers and to
enforce the law. However the main target should be the user. Families and
counselors need to talk to children and people at risk. Parents need to look
at their children and help them to Jobs are needed to give people a role in
society.
Be A Wise Shopper
You are the Secretary of the Consumers Association in your town. You are
invited to give a talk to students of a secondary school on Be a wise shopper.
First of all, you must not be influenced by advertisements in the mass media such as
the television, radio, newspapers and magazines. Advertisements only show a positive
side of a product without revealing the shortcomings. This is very misleading and
consumers are often tricked into buying products. For example, to promote the SKIPPI
brand of shampoo, an attractive girl with long, shiny hair is shown on television. One is
led to believe that by using the SKIPPI brand, one will have similar beautiful hair.
Also, a wise shopper should compile a list of necessary items before going shopping.
This will help you buy only what is required. Without a list, you will tend to buy
unnecessary items and thus spend a lot of money.
Furthermore, it is a good habit to compare prices in shops. In this way, you will know
where to get what you want to buy at the cheapest price. This practice is particularly
useful for big families who buy in large quantities or for those on a tight budget.
Another good habit is to check the quality and expiry dates of goods. Ensure that tins
are not dented or damaged and the expiry dates should be well ahead of time to allow
you to use the products for some time.
24
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
Finally, be careful when you buy during sales. Dont be fooled! Know your prices first
before you buy anything at a sale. Only then will you know if the sale is genuine or not.
Also, many goods during sales are old or rejects. Make sure you check the goods
carefully first.
By following these steps, I hope you will be wise shoppers and spend your money
wisely. Thank you for being such attentive listeners.
A Camping Experience
I couldnt sleep the night before. I was just too excited. This was my first time on a
camping trip. I had packed my backpack 3 days ago. There was a list of things that
were required from everyone such as sleeping bags, torchlight, matches, Mars Energy
Bars and not forgetting mosquito repellants.
Around 8am the following day, we arrived in our school bus at the foothills of Gunung
Ledang which is famous for its many myths and also beautiful camping spots. There
were 20 of us. We were all in our school scouts team accompanied by two teachers and
our guide, an Orang Asli man called Adun. First we went to register ourselves at the
rangers office before starting our hike.
It was a wonderful, cool morning. Adun pointed out to us various types of edible wild
plants and told us to 'respect the jungle' by not littering or thinking bad thoughts. 2 hours
later we reached a waterfall. It was a perfect spot to set up our tents. By the time we
finished setting up the tents, it was lunch time. Adun showed us how to gather firewood
and lit up a fire. He made a makeshift stand over the fire and hung a pot of icy water
from the waterfall to boil. While waiting to cook rice, our teachers said we could all go
for a quick swim in the waterfall. We had so much fun together! After a simple of rice
and sardines, we rested for a while. In the evening, our teachers took us exploring
around the area and gather more firewood before nightfall.
At night, after dinner, we lit a big fire and sat around it. Our teachers talked about jungle
survival tips and later we played games. Then Adun told us a few mystical stories about
Gunung Ledang. Some were scary and a few of us kept looking behind our backs at the
dark jungle. By 10pm our teachers asked us to go to sleep. Some of us couldnt sleep
so ended up chatting quietly in our tents till wee hours of the morning. We went home
the next morning, tired but happy.

Recently, our former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi launched an
anti-smoking campaign called Tak Nak. You can now see this short and rhyming catch
phrase Tak Nak everywhere on billboards, posters, TV ads, and sometimes I even
hear it on the radio. Though some people have criticised our government for setting
aside a staggering sum of RM100 million over 6 years for the campaign, it is nothing
compared to the huge amounts that tobacco companies spend to promote smoking.
But in this war against smoking, money definitely talks; it is necessary for the
Tak Nak Campaign to constanly remind us of the hazard of smoking because about 50
Malaysian teenagers light up for the first time every day. In fact, some of these youth
progress steadily from this to regular use, with addiction raking hold within a few years.
And this is despite the warning on every pack of cigarettes that states unequivocally
Smoking is dangerous to your health.
What can the Tak Nak Campaign do to combat this? Their aggressive
advertising creates media awareness among the public, especially among the
fashionable young crowd, that smokers have yellowed teeth and suffer from shortness
of breath and tells them that it is not cool to smoke. It is also not responsible of them to
affect non-smokers with second-hand smoke.
However, I feel any anti-smoking campaign is more effective if other people and
organisations are actively involved too. Yes, the first step has been taken by the top, but
sad to say, many of our politicians smoke themselves. Nearer to home, so do some of
our parents and teachers.
These adults have to be good role models by not smoking themselves. If they do
smoke, they should tell their children and students that they regret that they ever started,
and then take steps to quit smoking as soon as possible. They must practise what they
preach.
26
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
On a more positive note, I commend the Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union for its zero-
tolerance of smoking because they know that smoking and health just do not mix. How
can our sportsmen excel if they cannot stop smoking.
Dear teachers and students, thank you for your attention. Let me end my speech by
reiterating that smoking is a bad habit, so make Tak Nak your mantra. If you have
started smoking, say Tak Nak and quit! And if you havent started smoking, say know
that smoking not only damages your health but you are also literally burning your money.
According to the essay, Yes, Prohibit Their Use, which appeared on the congressional
quarterlys web site on March 16, 2001, the Harvard Center for risk analysis printed a
study in 1999. They appointed a crash risk factor to using cell phones. In the summer of
2000 it came out to 450 to 1,000 fatalities each year. The NHTSH says that for every
fatality, there are 666 property-damage and injury-producing crashes. There are about
300,000 and 650,000 different crashes due to cell phones! This same essay states that
Japan is one of the 14 countries banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving.
The accidents caused by the use of cell phones dropped by 75 percent the next month,
proving cell phones are not necessary parts of the driving nature.
There are major dangers connected with driving and cell phone use. Drivers have to
take their eyes off the road while dialing. Also, drivers can get so deep into their
conversations that their ability to concentrate may be dangerously limited. This
jeopardizes the safety of the people inside the vehicle, and the pedestrians outside. In
order to drive safely, the driver should be able to put 100% of his or her focus on the
road. Cell phones are simply a huge distraction while driving.
It is understandable that there are some cases where the use of a cell phone is needed.
In these cases, I agree with the author of Yes, Prohibit Their Use, the driver should pull-
over somewhere safe to use the phone. If someone receives an incoming call, he
should wait until the car has come to a complete stop. Then he should proceed to use
the phone. If he feels that the emergency is urgent enough to take action right away,
then the person should use the hands free headset. Only in emergencies should cell
phones be used.
27
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
Some people argue that there are other distractions other than cell phones. While using
a cell phone when driving may not be the most unsafe distraction, studies prove that it is
the most common cause of car crash accident, and common cause of death here in the
US.
The use of cell phones while driving should be banned in Philadelphia, because many
people die due to distraction of cell phones. Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths
and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year. (www.livescience.com/technology).
Another reason to not use the cell phone while driving is devastating the many lives of
the victims and their families in the case of an accident.
When driving, cell phones should not be allowed. Help the statistics decrease not
increase.
Finally, after ages of waiting, our family arrived in beautiful Korea. Stepping out of
the plane, we could feel the chilly weather to our bones. Never experiencing that kind of
weather, my siblings and I were totally excited. Passing through immigration and
baggage claim, we were talking animatedly about our new surroundings. Since we went
with tour group, we knew we were in good hands.
Incident number one. We were supposed to take a bus to check in at the hotel, as
instructed. I guessed I was overeager and without thinking. I ran to a random bus and
knocked on the door. The young bus driver opened the door and looked at me with a
puzzled expression. He started asking me something in Korean, which of course I did
not understand. I tried to reply in English, but before I could make the attempt, my father
quickly apologized to the driver and walked me back to the tour group who was
watching from afar, shaking with laughter. It turned out that the bus I was running to was
not the bus we were supposed to take. I dismissed my burning cheeks. I was glad I
could be the butt of everyone's jokes on my first day in a foreign country.
It was a bit past lunch time when we were done checking in our hotel. Not doubt,
everybody's stomachs were grumbling. Thank God after checking in, we were going to
have our lunch and do a bit of sightseeing. While waiting for the others outside the hotel,
we walked around nearby. There was a row of vending machines that sold various
snacks and beverages, including Haagen Dazs ice-cream , and instant noodles. My
mother had a craving for Nescafe, so she spent her first Korrean money on that.
28
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
At the restaurant, a delicious meal was already spread out for us. That was the first
time we all tried kimchi, a spicy and sour vegetable side dish.I did not think it was
horrible, buut I preferred the fish kimchi much better. We all ate using chopsticks, so
that was kind or awkward for me and my siblings, as we were not skilled at using them
yet. Being Malaysians, we were used to rice, so it was a good thing that the Korean
meal included rice and a few other side dish, eaten from a Bento box. It was weird
though, the rice was stickier compared to the rice we eat at home, mainly to make it
easier to eat using chopsticks. There was also hot and scumptious miso soup together
with the meal. Since my sister and my brother did not like it much, I finshed up theirs. I
gulped the warm soup down my throat- a nice connntrast from the shivering weather
outside.
One of the highlights of our activities that we did in Korea was skiling. Everybody
from the tour group was looking forward to that, even the 52-year old couple traveling
with us. Since it was'nt fully snownig yet, the hill was coverred with artificial snow. After
grobbing our ski gear, we listen to a briefing by the instructor. He was very help ful,
especially with us kids annd the elderly couple.
Feeling jumpy and hyperactive, me and my sister made our way to the cable car
and successfully skied down a slope. I thought, " We're natural at this," and my sister
could not agree more. When we came to see how our parents and brother were doing,
my brother started to throw a snowball towards me and my sister. It hit me, and we
started having a small snowball fight of our own, just like in the movies! I guessed we
got a bit out of hand and my sister accidentally hit a woman's back. when she turned
around, she had this angry look on her face and started to walk towards us.I hurried my
siblings to continue skiing with our parents, and we ran away before she cold catch us.
Breathless, we giggled innaivety as we recapped the moment.
In a way, skiing is like swimming. Why do I say so? Well, when swimming ,you do
not feel tired , but you would see the effect when you get ravenous and eat more after a
session or when you aintend to tke a nap, but it is extended to long hours. The same
goes to skiing. When we arrived at the hotel after skiing, we were drained out and
starving. Instant noodles saved the day! We all ate curry-flavoured Maggi together,
savouring the memontary pleasure. We also dozed off quite early that night , right after
going for a walk to enjoy the amazing night view of th mountains, and breathing the cool,
fresh winter air.
Shopping in Korea was also different compared to Malaysia. Its malls were packed
with small shops or stalla on every floor. Big boutiques were not seen as much as the
quaint kiosks. Nevertheless, I found shopping at their markets more enjoyable,
especially because you could haggle the price. Their specialities were crystals, fabrics
and outerwear. Apart form that, I also liked their wet markets , mainly because they
were very clean and they did not have that fishy smell. I remembered a shocking
incident when walking through the stalls of the wet market. A large fish jumped out its
aquarium and onto the floor. I stared at it and suddenly, I saw a huge cutting knife
29
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
slicing through the fish's neck! It was the owner of the stall's doing. Then, the owner left
the fish flapping around lifelessly without a head.
There was also a treasure trove among the stalls of the wet market- a tiny shoop
which served grilled seafood. My family stepped into the shop and ordered some grilled
fish and cockles.
After saying our prayers, we devoured our mouth-watering find of the day. Dripped
in a type of souce, the seafood was the best I had ever eaten, as you could taste the
freshness. Or maybe I was just hungry after a full day of activities.
30
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
If we have all these qualities, we will have more friends and well-wishers. We will also
have less trouble from others, and those who associate with us will also learn how to
behave well. In this way, our good manners will help to spread better understanding and
good-will among others. Thus, we can live a happier life. It is for all these reasons that
we should have good manners.

The haze is a direct effect of forest fire in Kalimantan and other parts of
Indonesia due to slash and burn method of farming. The Indonesian authorities appear
to have no power to control farmers from practising such methods. The haze is further
worsened by open burning practised by most Malaysians. Open-field burning of rice
straw by the rice planters and open burning of dried leaves and garbage done by the
public are a few examples that done by Malaysian. Many are ignorant of the health
effects of open burning.
During the haze, hospitals and clinic often report a dramatic increase in
respiratory problems, lung infections and asthma attack. The Air Pollution Index (API)
usually indicates the hazardous and dangerous levels of pollution during this period.
The haze has long-term side effects. Prolonged inhalation of polluted air will result in
serious lung infection which particularly affects the elderly.
The government must play its role to reduce the haze treat. It has to cooperate
31
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
with the Indonesian authorities to stamp out forest fires. The culprits must be brought to
justice, either through healthy fine or prison sentence. Constant vigilance would ensure
the perpetrators do not repeat their offence.
The government should also raise the public awareness of the dangers of forest fire.
Continuous campaign of the cause, solutions and steps-need-to-be-taken to reduce the
haze need to be promoted through all types of social media like television, radio,
newspaper and even via internet. The authorities should also provide assistance to
farmers and introduce more sophisticated forest clearing methods.
In Malaysia, strict laws must be imposed to penalise those who practise open
burning. On-going campaigns on the dangers of open burning should be intensified.
Individuals too have a role to play. They must participate in every campaign and stop
burning. Students can advise their parents not to practice open burning.
Every individual has to remember that we do not own the world, but instead we
lent it from our future generations. We must protect our world so that our grandchildren
woulh have a healthy earth to live.

Dear Sir,
2. The rubbish in our area has not been collected for more than a week. The
rubbish is supposed to be collected on alternate days but this has not been the case.
The town council workers collect the rubbish according to their own whims and fancies.
The uncollected garbage has attracted not only flies and mosquitoes but also wild dogs
32

which had attacked the residents on several occasions. These stray animals also
scatter the rubbish and make the roads dirty and smelly. As a result, residents have to
bear the discomfort of stench from the garbage and risk their health.
3. We are also disappointed with the town council workers for not clearing the
clogged drains which are filled with rubbish. The drains would usually overflow when
there is heavy rain and the rubbish would then flow into the compounds of our houses.
Besides, putting up with the unbearable stench emitted from them, the residents have to
spend hours cleaning their compounds of rotten vegetables, food leftovers and other
rubbish.
4. Due to dengue outbreak recently, we are really concerned about the residents
health especially the children. Fogging service also was not done accordingly to the
schedule. The fogging authority only did their job whenever a case of dengue aroused.
They even fogging the neighbourhood late at night that caused us to leave the residents.
They need to consider the residents who have babies and also to those who need to
wake up early in the morning for work. The fogging also caused the people to have
breathing problem when we were not told the exact time of fogging.
5. We have made numerous appeals to the Municipal Council to look into our
complaints but to no avail. We have been putting up with this predicament for more than
a week. We hope the health authorities would do something to check these health
hazards.
Thank you.

Dear Sir,
I, as the secretary of the Residents' Association of Taman Perdana, would like to make
a complaint on behalf of the residents of Taman Perdana about the presence of stray
dogs in our area and seek a quick solution to our problem.
2. Recently, there has been a sudden increase in the population of stray dogs in our
neighbourhood. Vicious-looking dogs roam the neighbourhood in packs and this
phenomenon is causing terror to spread amongst the residents.
3. It is not only the sight of the dogs that are frightening the people, but also the
reported cases of residents being bitten and chased. Five people, so far, have been
attacked by the stray dogs and three are currently in the hospital for treatment. Some of
the dogs look infected and diseased and I fear they may spread terrible diseases like
rabies to the residents.
4. Aside from bodily harm, the stray dogs also ruin the cleanliness and neatness of
Taman Perdana. The hungry wild dogs frequently mess up the rubbish in the rubbish
bins by knocking them over and tearing the plastic bags used to hold the trash. Not only
is it making the roads and alleys dirty and smelly, but such occurrences also attract flies,
rats and other pests. Lastly, the children are afraid to use the playground facilities for
fear of being attacked. The stray dogs constantly hang around the playground like they
are seeking victims.
5. I sincerely hope that you will consider our problem seriously and that the Town
Council will soon provide us with relief. I am grateful for your attention in reading this
letter.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
MTan
(MARISSA TAN)
Secretary,
Residents' Association of Taman Perdana,
Melaka.

Born on 20th December, 1925 in Alor Setar, Dr. Mahathir is the son of a teacher. He is
the youngest of nine children of a school teacher and a housewife. His father, Mohamad
Iskandar, was of Indian descent, being the son of a Muslim and a Malay mother, while
Mahathir's own mother, Datin Wan Tempawan Wan Hanafi, was Malay. He is married to
Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali, they have seven children, four sons and
three daughters. From an early age, Tun Mahathir had the importance of education
drummed into him by his father, who was also a strict disciplinarian.
After his early education at the Maktab Sultan Abdul Hamid in Alor Setar, he
enrolled at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in the University of Singapore.
Armed with a MBBS degree in medicine, he set up his own clinic, the Maha Clinic in
Alor Setar. As a doctor, Tun Mahathir came into close contact with people from variety
of social strata and enjoyed a close rapport with them. He understood their problems.
Thus, when he was thrust into the politic limelight, he strove to fulfil the needs of the
people.
He was first catapulted into the world of politics when he became the Member of
Parliement for Alor Setar in 1964. After holding a number of portfolios, including Minister
of Education, Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister, he finally
became the Prime Minister on 16th July, 1981. The country flourished with Dr. Mahathir
at the helm of the government. His contributions to the nation are so immense and par
excellence. He has left his mark in every aspect in politics, economy or education.
With collapse of the prices of agricultural commodities in the eighties, Tun Mahathir
decided that it was time to shift the nations focus to more profitable areas. Thus, he
started the industrialization programme. Reputed as the countrys top salesman, he
showcased Malaysia to investors abroad in a bid to woo them. As a result of the heavy
industrialization drive, major projects like national car project or PROTON and the steel
company, PERWAJA, together with other mega project were launched one after
another. Next, realizing that industrialization would require a good infrastructure, he set
about improving it. The Mahathir era saw a successful completion of the North-South
Highway, the East-West Highway, the Multimedia Super Corridor, the Kuala Lumpur
International Airport in Sepang and many more.

An astute politician, he charted the growth of the countrys progress from the day he
took office. He envisages that Malaysia can only attain the status of a fully developed
country if it becomes an industrialization one and this ambition has been his main
agenda during his tenure. With this in mind, he announced Vision 2020, his most
ambitious vision.
Frank and outspoken by nature, Tun Mahathir speak without fear nor favour. This has
been the hallmark of thus much respected statesman. The inefficiency of local and
international organizations has always come under his scrutiny and critism.
It has been almost two decades since Tun Mahathir took over reins of the government.
It has undoubtedly been the golden era for Malaysia with many notable achievements.
The first outstanding characteristic about the countryside is that it is beautiful and
peaceful. The air is fresh and the surroundings green. This is because the countryside
is free from pollution, be it air, land or noise pollution. There no such perfect peaceful
view that you can see other than in the countryside.
There are no crowded streets and heavy traffic in the countryside. Thus there are no
fumes from cars and smoke from factories buildings to pollute the air. The trees
surrounded the countryside help the people from inhaling the polluted air. The freshness
smell of plant somehow helps the people of the countryside to have a healthy life.
Thirdly, heavy traffic and crowded streets increase the level of noise pollution. The
honking of cars in the streets is continuous and the crowds on the roads increase the
hub of activity. There are also sound of the machine used in manufacturing factories,
loud radio in and out the mall. These add to the noise of the city. Even if one lives in
residential areas, one is never far from busy streets.
However, in the countryside, life is slow-paced. There is no need to rush around
36
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
because there are not too many places to go. Most places are close by and people can
walk or cycle. Less vehicle used, so less fumes is released.
The most heart-warming thing about the countryside is the attitude of people. People
are friendly and helpful. If there are any happy or festive occasions, everyone pitches in
to help. This feeling of cooperation and neighbourliness is what separates the
countryside from the city.
In the city, people are too busy to take note of the people around. Some hardly even
know their neighbours. So they would not even be bothered about what happens to
people around. This is why the crime rate is increasing in the city because bystanders
do not rush in to help if a crime is committed on the streets.
The pace of life in the countryside is slow so people have more time to enjoy life as the
day goes on. Thus, for me to enjoy the quality of life, I prefer to live in the countryside.
In the countryside, however, you only move around people you are used to. So, you
seldom encounter strangers or new and demanding situations. Life is more mundane
and routine-like. Staying in a secure, safe place does not allow for one to gain new
experiences and grow in maturity.
Furthermore, young people need a life that is exciting and pleasurable. It is the city that
offers you entertainment- cinemas, parks and eating places. Here you can hang out with
friends and family members. Life as fast-paced and this keeps you active and alert all
times. And when it comes to educational opportunities, the city abounds in this. There
are good school and libraries that are necessary for your mental development.
Furthermore, there are places like museums and educational centres where you can go,
to increase your knowledge.
Such places that offer you entertainment or learning opportunities are of course not
available in the countryside. For entertainment, there is only the occasional festive
celebration or marriage feast or fishing outing. Some may find this appealing but not me.
Moreover, opportunities to widen your knowledge are limited in the countryside.
Another point in support of living in the city is the available of jobs. In the city, you can
find a job that suits your qualification or interest. If you find a job unsuitable, you can
always move to another. This, naturally, increases your earning power and you have
37
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
better chances of a more comfortable life. Of course, one may argue that one can live in
the countryside and work in the city but this will only incur extra expenses and
unnecessary inconveniences.
Thus, for all the reasons mentioned above, I think that life in the city is better than living
in the countryside. After all, you are young only once.

In January 1995, at the age of twenty years old, Kari gave birth to a baby girl. Her life
now revolved around her child, Alexis. She got out of her relationship, got a job, and
found a safe place for the two of them. Now living with her mom and step dad, working
as a papergirl (newspaper delivery person), and fighting for divorce, Kari was struggling.
It didnt matter though; she made the best of it.
When Alexis was two, Kari married her husband, Mike. Together, they got a town home.
Now, with a home and family, it may seem like times were great, but there was still a lot
of life to be learned from. Mike was constantly traveling; in fact, he was in Utah for two
years after they got married. Kari was now raising Alexis, working seven days a week,
and working to keep her marriage healthy. As with everything in her life, Kari took
sacrifices and made it work.
Fourteen years later, looking at this 36 year old, you would never realize the struggles
she has faced in life. She is a beautiful, young, and caring, mother, friend and wife. She
lives in a nice house, takes care of kids, home-schools Alexis and, her husband is home
almost every night. She has many great qualities, but I think the characteristic that
makes her the most unique and genuine person, is her love and creativity. She was,
and is, able to take anything normal and make it enjoyable.
By now you have probably realized, I am Alexis, her daughter. I have a great
relationship with my mom, something many girls, my age, are lacking. In some ways, its
like we grew up together (although twenty years apart), best friends. She has always
provided the loving, but strict mother figure, which I can rely on, in my life. Her creativity
brought me lots of fun times, and cherished memories, throughout my adolescents. Her
strong words and lectures, many she has learned from in the past, bring me wisdom
and guidance for the rest of my life. And her open and loving heart, gives me a safe
place to share my emotions. I never could ask for a better person to spend my
memories with, for they wouldnt be the memories they are, without her.

Money
It is truly undeniable that in this science and technology millennium, we can hardly live
without money. Even buying something small such as sweet will cost you some money.
However, this does not mean that money can buy happiness, unlike the misconception
of most people in the world. In fact, wealth is a far cry from happiness. If you disagree
with me, let's look at the reasons for my stand.
Firstly, one of the main gates to happiness is to stay healthy. Maybe some people think
that when one is rich, he can be healthy or it does not matter even if they have diseases
because these rich men have lots of money to pay their medication. This is totally wrong.
Good health is acquired from a healthy lifestyle progressively and not in a day. With lots
of money we are tend to temp ourselves to exotic, luxurious food. If this food is taken
excessively, it will let to obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension and other
serious illness. Moreover, rich people are probably lack of exercise as they hardly walk
outdoor due to 24 hours-service debar fetching them about causing them to be at a
higher risk of getting these unnecessarily health problems. How a person can enjoys his
life and feels happy when he is confined to a wheelchair or bed-ridden. He would not
even be glad spending his money and time curing his sickness. Therefore, wealth
cannot bring happiness.
Professionals like doctor, nurse, lawyer, engineer, food technologist and accountant
earn a lot of money per month. They are considered the high class citizens who can
afford large, expensive house with huge beautiful gardens. But do they really enjoy the
pleasures of life? Most probably not because they are simply too busy with their work.
They frequently burnt the midnight oil in their work place. It is even more miserable if
they have to turn their home into a working place. Most specialists have to stand-by 24
hours in case of emergency calls from the hospitals. Hence, they can hardly spend any
relax, restful night at their home even if they posse a huge two and a half storey
bungalow with a beautiful garden and artificial waterfall. Successful businessmen may
always have a chance of flying to all parts of the world when they go out station to make
business. However, very few of them can really take it as a holiday as a treat for
themselves for their schedules are always full and they are so stressful with their works.
Even fewer businessmen can ignore urgent, pursuing calls from their clients or office
when they are going for holidays or resting. In other words, one can make lots of money
but he may not enjoy even the beauty of nature around them or the branded, expensive
things with them. So what is the use of money when we do not even enjoy a meal
properly and discontented with lives. One with a moderate income can feels happier if
he leads a simple life and be grateful with what he has.
Finally, a children or a teenage brought in moderate family is better than in a rich family.
As the sons or daughters of billionaires, their parents will give them whatever that they
want in material. These children or teenagers get a lot of pocket money from their
parents and can afford to buy many expensive things like branded, latest handset,
expensive clothes and branded sport shoes. But the question is, are they happy if their
parents are always working with only an Indonesian maid to accompany them. If they
40
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
are asked to choose between wealth and love from their parents, I believe that they
were undoubtedly choose love. A healthy family is not created for the children. These
children mentally are not as healthy as those being cared and loved by their parents.
Children need parents who can listen to their problems and give them words of wisdom,
teaching then day by day. Parents who are not rich may not be able to buy branded
things to satisfy their children but with more communication and understanding, these
teenagers will understand the difficulty of their parents in earning money, learning to be
thrifty. In short, money does not promise a happy, caring family.
Money may be able to buy a lot of things but not love, friendship, health and others.
These are the main ingredients for a happy life. Thus, it is a controversy if money can
bring happiness. Even, if we can afford many things we desired with lots of money, we
may not be happy and enjoy our lives if we are always dissatisfied with what we had,
yearning for more. Thus, I stand firm that money cannot bring happiness.
Okay, time to recap. I and my friends, Jack and Peter, were playing around an old,
abandoned mansion. We were told that no one was allowed to enter. However, curiosity
overcame us and we picked the lock, granting us entrance into the sacred lair of the
unknown.
At the sight of the skeletons, the three of us were completely stunned. Our jaw hung
wide open for a few minutes before we came back to our senses. My sixth sense told
me that something was about to go wrong, so I urged the other two to back out of the
mansion.
Yes, but we might never get the chance to explore here again if we leave now.
All right, but we leave as soon as the first sign of danger shows.
We ventured deeper into the mansion. The design looked like some sort of torture room,
or a prison. Even though I was afraid, I was eager to discover more. Throughout the lair,
we did not lose sight of skeletons or spider webs. These were at every corner, at every
turn. The occasional howls from a distance made the hair on our backs stand up
straight. We finally arrived at a long hallway. Jack picked up a piece of wood and lighted
it up with his lighter. The flame seared at first, but after it simmered down, I was able to
see the walls clearly. There were ancient writings, the kind we usually see in an
Egyptian grave robber movie. As the expert in history, Jack tried his best to decipher the
41

carvings. Meanwhile, Peter leaned towards the wall to catch his breath. At that very
moment, a cold chill went down my spine.
Before he could react, that portion of the wall he was leaning against flipped, trapping
him on the other side. All he could let out was a loud shriek and he vanished behind the
walls. I pounded against the wall, shouting his name. Only then did I know what real
terror felt like. However, the chance of rescuing him was bleak. I sank to the ground,
desolated and hopeless.
Lets get out of here, we have to inform the adults! suggested Jack.
I got to my feet swiftly and both of us sped through the building. My heart was racing. I
knew that danger may be waiting at the next corner. I could hear blood pounding in my
ears. Wait, was that a creak I heard? Uh-oh, I thought to myself. The ceiling began to
crumble. My sub-consciousness took over. I sprang forward and tackled Jack. Both of
us fell to the ground. Just as I thought that trouble was out of the way, the burning piece
of wood slipped out of his hand and landed in a pile of grease. Fire started spreading
like mad. I struggled to get up.
Come on, theres not much time left! I screamed as I turned towards the exit.
Aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
In a split second, my head turned 180 degrees. A gigantic marble pillar fell on Jack. I
mustered all the strength from every single cell in my body, trying to lift it up, to no avail.
My eyes were watery. I was completely out of ideas.
Save yourself, leave me, please, muttered Jack, with a weak tone.
This was certainly a tough decision for me. All the moments we had spent together
flashed through my mind. How could I leave him now? As the fire was close to sealing
my only exit, I knew that I had to be rational. I dived for my escape route.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as the mansion erupted into flames behind me.
Junk Food
Junk food comes in many colours, flavours and types of packaging. Most of it
contains very little nutrition.
Some are in the form of drinks and others in the form of food and snacks. The
drinks are usually colorful and contain a lot of sugar. These drinks can cause diabetes
42
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
and hyperactivity. Many school kids arc addicted to these drinks and this has become a
big problem to our health care system.
Burgers and fries are another form of junk food that has caught on here. They
originate from western countries where the lifestyles need fast and convenient food that
is usually fried and coated in sauces. These types of food, which include fried chicken
and beef usually have high salt content. This paired with sweet colas is a recipe for
disaster. They can lead to obesity and heart disease.
Other forms of junk food arc preserved fruits. They usually come from China and
arc known to contain preservatives, artificial colouring and lots of salt or sugar. These
preserved snacks are linked to allergies and cancer. Some food colouring can cause
asthma. Almost all junk food is linked to obesity as it is high in carbohydrate.
When we mention junk food, the doughnut is one famous example. They are
usually coated, glazed and covered in chocolate, sugar and all sorts of unhealthy
colourful toppings. They are not cheap either. So it is an expensive way to diabetes and
obesity. Another worrying example of junk food that is widely available is candy.
Candies of all colours and shapes, flavours and wrappings are found almost
everywhere. They are usually cheap and sold in places where there are children and
schools. These candies arc found to contain banned substances such as flavouring and
colouring. Most are made from sugar and starch. Some have been banned by the
Ministry of Health.
In conclusion, we must educate the public of this huge threat to our health. The
younger generation must be informed of the danger and laws must be formulated to
lessen the damage it causes.
A Fire
It was twilight time. I was watching television in my house when I heard an explosion.
More followed. So I went outside to see what the matter was.
A column of dark billowing smoke told me the story. There was a fire raging a short
distance away.
I got onto my bicycle and pedalled in the direction of the smoke. A couple of kilometres
later I came upon the fire. It was a row of motor-workshops and they were burning
furiously.
The police and fire department had already cordoned off the area. I watched from a
distance. A crowd had already gathered and we gaped with amazement at the
spectacle presented by the burning shops.
43
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
The fire rose to about twenty metres and it lit up the whole area even though the sky
was already dark. The firemen desperately sprayed streams of water into the fire to
control it. Now and then explosions can be heard as gas cylinders blew up in the
intense heat.
For more than an hour the fire raged. I could see anxious people trying to get near the
workshops only to be held back by the police. They were obviously the shop-owners
trying to save their shops. Actually they could do nothing but wait for the fire to be
extinguished.
Finally the blaze died down and darkness enveloped us. The workshops were totally
razed. Only red-hot embers remained where they once stood. The crowd thinned and I
too got onto my bicycle and cycled home.
My Favourite Teacher
Watching Mr Lim get into his car is educational; and watching him get out of it is
even more so. Mr Lim, the teacher of Secondary 1, weighs more than a 100 kg and his
car is an old mini.
At first sight one would think that it would be impossible for him to get in; but he
does so with amazing agility and grace. No sooner does he get out of the car when we
see a flock of school children running to greet him as if he were a film star. He will then
make his entry into his classroom like a VIP on a visit.
As he walks he answers the various questions thrown at him from his young
companions. Most of them are students from his present class, but some are his old
students. They just happened to be around when Mr Lim arrived and they could not
resist running to him.
Mr Lim is the oldest teacher in the school and has been teaching there since its
founding in 1955. He has been teaching Secondary 1 for all these years and has taught
thousands of students. Among the students he has taught are several top civil servants,
two army generals, two cabinet ministers and our school principal. In spite of all his
achievements, what makes Mr Lim my favourite teacher, and the favourite teacher to
many others too, is the fact that he really cares. He cares about all of us equally. He
does more than just teach us.
He knows all his students and ex-students by name and delves into all our
personal lives. He can tell with a look that we are unhappy about something. He will
then take us aside and talk. He will get to the root of the problem, even seeing the
principal or our parents if need be. He will not stop until the problem, whatever it is, is
44
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
solved and he does it in all sincerity without expecting anything in return. Is there any
wonder then that we all love him?
Honesty
According to the Cambridge dictionary, honesty is the quality of being truthful or
being able to be trusted or the quality of not being able to steal, cheat or lie.
So, you can see what a good quality it is and how important it is for one to
posses this quality.
Honesty must also be present in a marriage or the relationship will not last.
Marriage partners must not cheat and have affairs with others. They must remain
faithful to the one they have vowed to love in health or in sickness and during good
times or bad. An honest couple have to stick through thick or thin, through heaven or
through hell.
A child must also have honesty. He must be honest to his parents so that his
parents will have complete trust in him. He must not do undesirable things that hurt his
parents. He must act in ways that make them happy such as concentrating on his study
and avoiding bad company.
Honesty is also important in an employee. An employee must carry out his work
honestly so that both his employer and he, himself, will prosper. Dishonesty at work
such as not doing one's share of work properly or stealing employers' goods will harm
both the firm he is working for and he, himself. Eventually the firm will have to close
down and the employee lose his job.
From the foregoing, we can see how important honesty is in our lives, whatever
we may be.

I was only ten when he passed away but even now, I admire my grandfather for
his courage and his will to survive. I knew his determination to succeed started when he
himself was ten years old. It was then that his father who had emigrated to Malaysia
many years before died, leaving behind his wife and many small children.
As the eldest child of the family, my grandfather assumed the role of head of the
household. He worked very hard in an estate many miles from home to support the
family. Since he could not afford any form of transport, my grandfather was forced to
walk all the way there each day. By the time he reached home, his feet were full of
blisters but he never complained.
Instead he reared cows at home to supplement the meagre income he got from
tapping rubber. He knew success came from hard work and he was a conscientious
worker, eager to make the best of the situation.
My grandfather married at an early age and had six children. He used to cycle
ten miles to the estate where he toiled diligently. As the years passed by, he saved up
enough money and made many intelligent investments. He soon became the owner of
several estates.
Once he found me crying. I had done badly in a test and thought myself a failure but he
advised me to persevere and told me a story that changed my life.
During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese had confiscated his only means
of transport, his trusty bicycle. My grandfather was e without his bicycle, he would not
be able to go to his s easily. However, he still continued the long journey on foot.
This story still sticks in my mind. Every time I want to give up, I think of the odds
against him as he was growing up, and then I decide to persevere instead and make
sure that I finally succeed.

My grandfather wanted his eldest son to be the first doctor from Kuala Krian and

If I Were A Millionaire
If I were a millionaire, then my life would take a dramatic turn from what it is now.
I would adopt the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
The first thing that I would do, if I were a millionaire, is to help my parents. My
parents are poor and live in a small house. It would be a dream come true if I could buy
them a bigger, better and more spacious house. They would also be able to live a life of
luxury, as I would be able to hire servants to help my mother with her domestic chores.
My father would finally get his well-earned break. He has been selling vegetables in the
market all his life and has worked hard. If I become a millionaire, I would ask him to stop
working, as he is old and needs to rest. I would not want him to die in harness.
Money is definitely a boon and can be a friend. My life would change too. I would
finally be able to afford to buy better clothes and would even be able to afford some
designer labels like Gucci or Channel. Furthermore, I would no longer be seen riding my
motorcycle, as I would be driving a fancy car. To maintain this image would mean that I
would not be able to socialize with some of my friends at the teh tarik stall. I would now
have to dine at the best clubs in town and rub shoulders with only very special people.
With more money, I would definitely be able to go on holidays and see the rest of
the world. I would finally be able to fulfil a long cherished dream of helping the poor. I
would be able to donate to charitable organisations, not only in Malaysia but also in
other countries.
Being a millionaire definitely means having more fun. It also means having a
better life and seeing many of my dreams come true. Wealth and riches may not be a
bad thing, as it would definitely make me a better person.
Preventing Truancy
Truancy tops the list of misdemeanours by our students. Almost every day,
students are caught playing truant. Although it is not a serious problem, it must be
nipped in the bud.
Truancy means being absent from school without a valid reason. Students play
truant for a number of reasons. Most of them play truant because of negative peer
influence. They follow their friends who skip school. Financial problems can also cause
a student to stay away from school and that explains why students who play truant are
mainly from the lower income groups. Learning problems is another cause of truancy.
Students who find academic subjects difficult or boring would prefer to play truant.
47
MODEL ENGLISH ESSAY
Some students who are addicted to drugs or alcohol will frequently be absent. The fear
of bullying or harassment may also cause timid students to play truant.
If left unchecked, truancy can lead to juvenile delinquency and numerous other
negative outcomes. Youths who play truant have an increased risk of dropping out of
school. School dropouts are more likely to he unemployed as prospective employers
are concerned about attendance of their potential employees. Regular school
attendance is also important for academic success. If a student often plays truant, he
may fail in his examinations. Students who play truant also have low self-esteem and
become social misfits.
