D. Reading Comprehension

Birth Date. William Shakespeare, surely the world's most performed and admired
playwright, was born in April, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, about 100
miles northwest of London. He was baptized on April 26. Since it was customary to
baptize infants within days of birth, and since Shakespeare died 52 years later on
April 23, and--most significantly--since April 23 is St. George's day, the patron saint
of England, it has become traditional to assign the birth day of England's most famous
poet to April 23.

Parents and Family. Shakespeare's parents were John and Mary Shakespeare, who
lived in Henley Street, Stratford. John, the son of Richard Shakespeare, was a
whittawer (a maker, worker and seller of leather goods such as purses, belts and
gloves) and a dealer in agricultural commodities. He was a solid, middle class citizen
at the time of William's birth, and a man on the rise. He served in Stratford
government successively as a member of the Council and the equivalent of town
mayor.

Mary, the daughter of Robert Arden, had in all eight children with John Shakespeare.
William was the third child and the first son.

Answer these questions:

1) Why is William Shakespeare famous? He is the worlds most performed and

admired playwright.
2) When was he born? He was born in April 1564
3) How far is his home town from London? Shakespeares hometown, Stratford
Upon Avon, is about 100 miles northwest London.
4) What did his father do? He was a whittawer and a dealer of agricultural
commodities
5) How many brothers and sisters had he got? He had 7 brothers and sisters.

The wild island

If you look at a map of the west coast of Scotland youll see hundreds of islands. Theres a big
island called Mull and just below it, a tiny rocky island called Rua Fiola. Its about one
kilometre long and theres only one house on it. Near the house theres a wooden cabin which
is the Rua Fiola Exploration Centre.

One man owns Rua Fiola and the other islands nearby. His name is Torquil Johnson-
Ferguson. The Exploration Centre opened 29 years ago and lots of people have visited it to
see wildlife, attend courses and take holidays.

If you go to the island, youll find deer, grey seals, dolphins, spectacular seabirds and lots of
other types of wildlife. If you want a real survival adventure, you can take part in
the expedition to an uninhabited island. Youll be left there for 24 hours with your friends, and
youll have to build a shelter or find a cave to live in. You can also explore seashores, climb
mountains and cook meals on open fires. If you enjoy water sports, youll be able to go
canoeing, and the more adventurous can go rock-climbing on 25-metre high cliffs.
