Field Experience Assignment #2

1. Make a scale drawing of the classroom

a. 3/17/16, Room 815, Mr. Raymond, 10th Geometry (and Geometry Honors). There are 40
desks in the classroom (excluding the teachers desk), the 4 other desks are laid against
the left side of the room. Two cabinets on the left side of the classroom on each corner,
and a book shelf on the left next to the cabinet nearest to the entrance. The teachers
desk is on the right side of the room with a shelf behind the desk.
b. There are small windows on the right side of the wall. There is only one door to the
classroom while the restrooms are directly across the classroom.
c. There are extra books on the bookshelf. The teacher has all the other materials
(calculators, etc.)
d. There are no learning centers in the school, but the school offers after school tutoring in
designated classrooms.
e. I feel that the classroom layout is descent and doesnt need any improvements, nor
does anything needed to be added. The four extra desks, however, I believe should be
removed as they take too much space and are deemed unnecessary as the class has not
reached a full capacity.
2. Analyzing the drawing. To what extent does this classroom reflect the following five keys to
good room arrangement?
a. Use a room arrangement consistent with our instructional goals and activities. This was
pretty consistent.
b. Keep high traffic areas free of congestion. Definitely used to a high extent.
c. Be sure students are easily seen by the teacher. Little extent, as the teacher focuses
more on the center of the class, not the back or left side (teachers right).
d. Keep frequently used teaching materials and students supplies readily accessible. Highly
consistent, as materials are easy to reach out.
e. Be certain students can easily see instructional presentations and display. Little extent,
some students, particularly in the back, have trouble seeing the front.
3. The strengths of the class Everything in the class is well organized and placed in a cleanly
manner, cluster free and have a good amount of space.
The weakness of the class Some students have trouble seeing the front of the board as well as
a few have been ignored. Teacher only address students in the front center.
Having a seating chart would be the idea, as the class is pretty scattered throughout.
4. Observing Students
a. From the 1st class, there are 20 students, 15 years of age. There are 16 boys and 14 girls.
b. The students are the left side appears to be isolates, as they were sleeping in class, away
from the teachers view.
c. There wasnt any students who raised their hand, but there was one girl who
occasionally shouts out the answers, and shes located on the back of the class. Teacher
does address her, but seems more concerned of the students in the front.
d. Students in the back, ironically, are more of the engaged students in the class. This is
particularly noticeable in the 2nd class of the day. This was the teachers wild class as the
majority of the students, particularly in the front, were the rowdy students, but the
students in the back were more concentrated, despite the distractions.
e. From the 1st class, there was only one student, and it was the girl who I mentioned
earlier. The 2nd class had no praise.
f. The left side of the class, particularly the first two rows nearest to the entrance, were
mostly ignored. Students who sat at one of the four extra desk receive little attention as
well.

Summary

At the start of the class, students in this teachers classroom have to place their backpacks in the
bins that are provided in the front of the class by the white board. The only thing students need for the
class is their textbook, notebook, and a pencil. The teacher does this to prevent the students from
getting distracted during the lesson.

The very 1st class of the day were the teachers most silenced class. Whether it was because it
was early in the morning or the students are that quiet is unknown. Even so, the students in that class
are less engaged and the teacher struggled to have their attention. Only one student was most the
interactive, and she sat in the back of the class.

The 2nd class, however, was the teachers worst class. They were the loudest class of the bunch.
Yelling without a turn, using profanity in the class. The teacher struggled to get their attention, but ends
up joining them as a way of getting them to concentrate on the lesson. The most disruptive in the class
are the students in the front, while the students in the back are more engaged in the lesson, but the
most ignored.

Only one student approached me during my observation, and she came from the 2nd class. She
mentioned that school is pretty strict with their rules, especially the tardy lockout rule, where
students must make it to class before the bell rings. Any student who does not make it to class must go
to the deans office, where they will be written up for detention. She mentions that the teacher in the
class is very understanding, but has trouble getting any attention from the students.
