Prerequisite: MECH 3315. Pre- or co-requisite: MECH 3120

Course Description
MECH 3320 Heat Transfer (3 semester hours) Lecture course. This course focuses on the
treatment of conductive, convective, and radiative energy transfer using control volume and
differential analysis and prediction of transport properties. Prerequisite: MECH 3315. Pre- or co-
requisite: MECH 3120. (3-0) Y

Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes

It is expected that the students will gain a fundamental physical and mathematical
understanding of this topic rather than memorizing the equations and situations. By this,
it is implied that the student will be able to correctly apply the course content (given in an
outline below) to new situations so as to evaluate potential industrial applications of
electromagnetism through both physical induction and mathematical
analysis/computation. Such inductive and analytical reasoning will be taught through
classroom examples and homework, while it will be tested on examinations.

Basic concepts of engineering heat transfer

Steady and transient heat conduction in 1-D solids
Finned surfaces (Multi-dimensional conduction)
Internal and external forced convection
Natural (free) convection
Design and analysis of heat exchangers
Radiation heat transfer
Combined convection and radiation, condensation, and boiling
