Experiment # 1

To perform taper turning on a lathe machine using tail stock offset method.

Problem Statement:

For workpieces have larger length to diameter ratio, it is difficult to produce taper along their
entire length, due to difficulty in workpiece holding procedure, to cope with this problem tail
stock offset method is used to produce taper along the length of workpiece. Generally used when
no taper attachment is available.

Fig. 1.1, work holding in tail stock off set method

Required Experimental Setup:

Lathe Machine
Machine Tool Kit
Aluminium and Mild Steel rods
Dial Indicator
Cutting Oil
Drawing
Safety Instructions:

The Experiment will be stopped immediately if safety instructions are not properly
followed.
Eye protection is necessary for the students in the work area
The sleeves must be folded above the elbow
Lab coats are included in compulsory clothing, loose clothing especially for the female
students are not allowed.
Students must clean the equipment when experiment is completed with the cleaning
brush and tools must be placed back to the tool kit

Procedure:

Involves moving tailstock center out of line with headstock center

Following steps are involved;

Mounting the workpiece between centers

Alignment of the lathe centers
Measuring the tailstock offset with the help of formulas.
Setting the offset by:
Loosening the tail stock clamp nut
Offset upper part of tailstock by loosening one setscrew and tightening the other until
required amount is indicated on graduated scale at end of tail stock.
Starting the rough turning
Perform the finish turning

Offset Formula:

1. Off Set = D-d x L

2l

Where;
D = Major dia.
d = Minor dia.
l = Taper length
L = Full length.

When the entire length of job is to be tapered (L=l), the formula:

2. Off set = D-d

2
3. Offset = tpf x L
24

Where, tpf = Taper per foot

Taper per inch, tpi= tpf/12

4. Offset = tpi x L
2

Observations and Calculations:

Sr. No. Major Dia D (in) Minor Dia d (in) Taper length (in) Full Length (in) Offset
(in)

Limitations:

The Amount by which tailstock can be offset is limited due to which the amount of taper that can be
generated is limited.
