 Foreword

BARC training school has always been a mainstay for developing the highly skilled human resource in
the area of nuclear science and engineering. The Trainee Scientific Officers here are the best amongst
the candidates aspiring to pursue a career in the Department of Atomic Energy. They are imparted upon
with a rigorous training program for duration of one year.

It gives me immense pleasure to see the efforts of the Trainee Scientific Officers of 57th batch coming in
the form of this trainee's magazine Kaarvaan. This initiative is an endeavor purely on the part of the
trainees albeit having fairly heavy load of lectures, practicals, projects and examinations. I am sure that
this will help them in overall personality and skill development in their professional career.

The issue contains a wide variety of entries ranging from their experiences during the Training
program, their personal accounts, and some suggestions to forthcoming batches etc. A very interesting
section of interviews conducted by trainees is included in this issue. The interview with Bharat Ratna,
Prof. C.N.R. Rao will always be an inspiration for them.

I end here by congratulating them for bringing up this issue of the magazine and give my best wishes for
their joining in the DAE family.

worry about my work. Whatever I may be doing
through the day I keep worrying about the
sentences and paragraphs that I want to write in
manuscripts, or about something new that I want
to do in the laboratory. There is always a kind of
an undercurrent related to my research that
keeps going through my mind, and this has helped
me to get maximum possible results in the
available time. Having done research for 63
years (out of which 55 years, I have been a
Professor), I find that it is important that we don't
waste too much time. Once I start working in the
morning, I don't waste any time until I come
home. I don't take coffee/tea breaks. I don't have
time for gossip. Fortunately, people know my
feelings on the matter and do not disturb me
much. I enjoy music which I listen to every
morning or evening. Music has been a great
companion for me even in the office during the

Q. Youth in this country are restless. What is

anywhere else. They have to work harder and

inspiration is concerned, I have always found that
it is nice to have heroes that one can adore. As I
told in my lecture, my own heroes have been
people like Faraday, G.N. Lewis and Linus Pauling.
From India, my main heroes have been J.C. Bose
and C.V. Raman. My heores are generally are those
who have worked throughout their life. A great
person with whom I worked with was Prof. Nevill
Mott (Cavendish Professor at Cambridge) who
was a Nobel Laureate. He died at the age of 93
and in the year he died, he had four publications. I
will never forget Prof. Mott who influenced me
much in condense matter research. Prof. H.C.
Brown (my teacher at Purdue also a Nobel
Laureate) had several paper at the age of 96 when
he died.

Q. What legacy do you want to leave after
you?
A. I am not worried about my legacy. All I can
say is that I would like to be remembered as one
who continued to work as along as he could and
as one always worked with young people.
Having wonderful young students has been
wonderful. I have lectured to thousands of young
people all over India at school and college levels
and this has become a mission in my life, in
addition to publishing the best possible research
from India.

Q. It sometime happens that people don't get

a domain of their choice in research or job;
what is your suggestion to them?

A. I realize that sometimes it is a matter of luck as

to where one works or where one gets a job.
However, if one is determined to work in the best
laboratory possible to pursue a particular area,
eventually one succeeds. Here again, some
patience may be required along with some
accomplishment. One can be unlucky not to have
the right place to work and this suppresses
enthusiasm.

Q. How can we enhance our scientific,

technological and industrial development
using Gandhian principles?

A. I am a great admirer of Gandhiji. One of the

main things that we have to learn from Gandhiji is
that India has to stand at its own feet. We have to
worry about the poor of India. Even in the
Gandhian model, doing things in India becomes
important. We have to work against all odds to be
counted in this world. Don't forget, Gandhiji
created new way of expressing dissent based on

Q. You have devoted more than half of your life
for nation's nuclear program. Please share your
best experiences from your professional career.
A. My journey with DAE has always been full of
excitement and challenges which started from the first
year itself when I graduated from trainee school in
1973. We had Pokhran-1 in 1974 and also the
construction of Dhruwa reactor started around the
same time. Being brought up in the technology denial
regime, we needed complete self-reliance. Many such
instances and incidents are still fresh in my mind, but
one thing I can tell from my own experience is that the
proudest moments are those when we stand up to the
critical situation on our own defying all the negative
speculations.
One such moment came in 1989 when MAPS 1 and 2
were rendered non-functional because of failure of
moderator inlet manifold in both the units. We had
large pieces of metals inside the calandria, fallen on
the calandria floor which were blocking the
moderator flow path. It was first such critical situation
faced in PHWR operations in the world.
Our first job was to move out the pieces from the
moderator flow path. We made a remote manipulator
in Hall 7 capable enough to survive a very high
radiation field. Despite having no such experience
beforehand, we could not take proper trial runs due to

time constrains. In the end, we were not only able to
remove the metal pieces, but also outperformed a
foreign contractor having multiple years of experience
in remote handling.
There were many such experiences in my professional
career. DAE is one place where you are allowed to try
things for the very first time in the world and learn
from your mistakes. Even today I have got the same
excitement towards learning.
Q. Sir, in your opinion how is the philosophy of
multidisciplinary research relevant in context of
DAE?
A. Any technology starts with basic science only. DAE
has the philosophy of RD3 - Research, Design,
Development and Delivery. The fruits of research must
go to society at large be it reactor technology, radio
isotopes generation, irradiation of bio products or
anything else. To achieve a common target, various
science and engineering disciplines must work in
harmony with each other. As DAE being more focused
on deliverables to the society, everything is multi-
disciplinary here.
Q. Who is your role model and what do you see in
him/her?
A. I have deep reverence and utmost respect for Dr.
Homi Jehangir Bhabha, who sacrificed his highly
successful scientific career in order to the build the
nation and bring prosperity and self-reliability to us.
The great man pursued his interest in Physics after
obeying his father's advice to complete the course in
mechanical engineering. In a very short span of time,
he earned a great name in the field of Physics.
He was a true institution builder, who envisaged
science and atomic energy for the country's future
needs in 1930s. For that he nucleated Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Atomic Energy
Commission. He achieved great heights in a short span
of time and got the things done for the country. His
emphasis on creating scientific environment in
country and developing the self-reliance in nuclear
technology did not only help us out in technological
denial regime, but also ensured that we have the brain
power to tackle difficult situations on our own under
adverse conditions. In a way he not only built the
department, achieved things but also set a roadmap
and built a strong foundation for the DAE in a very
short span of time.
Q. In your opinion, what should motivate a young
DAE scientist or inspire them to go another step
ahead?
A. It is the excitement of doing something new which
propels every scientist in his career. In DAE, you have
freedom and flexibility to convert your ideas to some
research outcomes or deliverables to the society. You
also have the chance to do work on projects of very
high national and international impact. In my opinion,
the opportunity to contribute something meaningful
to the nation in itself is a huge motivation, which is
more difficult to get elsewhere.
Q. What are the mechanisms to take the
technologies developed by DAE to the public? Are
there any new thoughts in this regard to improve
the efficiency of delivery?
A. DAE has developed many mainstream as well as
spin off technologies in the past which range from
atomic energy, radio isotopes to the industries and
healthcare, water purification, instrumentation to
agriculture and several advanced technologies.
Traditionally we have been having direct technology
transfers, where private entrepreneurs are provided
with these technologies by DAE through advertisement
under various schemes.
Many technologies developed by DAE need some
additional market driven value addition. We are
thinking of developing a model to utilize such
technologies through an empowered board working
within government framework. Some products,
services or even consultancies provided by DAE have
potential to generate huge revenues, which can be
used to cross subsidize basic technologies so as to
provide the service to the society at lower cost.
Definitely, improving the efficiency of delivery to the
society is a priority for DAE.
Q. DAE and its daughter organisations have
websites with outdated looks compared to
similar research organisations of other countries
(for instance, crowded with too much of
information in the home page itself, not designed
for screen resolutions being used these days and
not appealing enough ). With a beautiful and
strong IT team, any measures to modernise our
web platforms?
A. I agree with you that websites should be appealing
and interactive. In today's world, internet media is a
very powerful tool of communication. It has to have a
pleasant look which also conveys about our
programmes in a manner which addresses all the
queries, apprehensions and misapprehensions about
our nuclear program. With improved aesthetics, our
viewership will also increase. We are already working
to make the website attractive and more useful for the
people. We also need to ensure that all the websites are
updated regularly. There are certain limitations
because of security reasons and also we have to follow
the guidelines set by the Government of India. But yes,
within these limitations also improvement can be
done. We have gathered some ideas and started
working on the issue. I will have no hesitation in giving
this responsibility to groups of young people who can
give frank suggestions.
Q. Organizations are effectively using media
platforms, outreach programs to schools and
colleges and awareness programs for the general
public. What mandate must be prepared in this
regard to garner the public acceptance? Your
take on this and any special initiatives in this
direction?
A. We have several projects to create the public
acceptance and support for nuclear energy. Many such
projects are already in implementation phase, while
others are in development stage. For example, in
Kudankulam, NPCIL has put huge efforts to engage
with local public. 2-3 batches of visitors visit the plant
every day, where they are provided with basic

knowledge of working and safety related issues of the
nuclear reactor. The exercise as a whole has been a
huge success.
A short video clip about the functions and
achievements of DAE is telecasted on Door Darshan
channel. A fund of 300 Crore Rs is sanctioned for
establishing DAE communication centres at the
periphery of major DAE installations. These outreach
centres will be more or less standardised with seminar
area, exhibit area and technology transfer area. It will
help prospective beneficiaries such as farmers,
medical practitioners, entrepreneurs, college
professors and students etc. to connect and
communicate with DAE in a better manner.
An official presence on social media is becoming a
necessity. It will help us interact with public at large
and address the queries and misconception of public
related to nuclear energy. We should ensure our
presence in a crisp manner with a factual position.
Such a mechanism has not yet been established. But we
will definitely look forward on this. It is also
understood that if we can provide some knowledge
and true facts about this field to students at a young
age, they are less likely to be influenced or misguided
by wrong and biased information at a later stage. In
this regard, it is also planned to include a chapter
about Nuclear Energy in NCERT text books.
Q. Waiting period for accommodation in
Anushaktinagar is very long (approx. 8 yrs). Are
there any projects in the pipeline to address this
situation?
A. Due to space crunch in Anushaktinagar residential
colony, to provide accommodation to all the employees
is not possible. That's why HRA was increased
substantially in last pay commission. I do hope they
take care of the issue this time also.
Q. What would you suggest to TSOs who are
placed with job profiles less oriented towards
research but still want to pursue research in
his/her area of interest?
A. DAE, being a large family of organisations has very
diverse work profiles. It is not possible to assure
everyone the desired job profile. But, I can assure you

that genes of innovations are in blood of every DAE
employee. Even if work seems to be rather mundane,
the room for improvement and innovation is always
there. Many systems and processes are not yet fully
understood. No system works completely according to
model simulated for it. A person working in control
room gets the information of process parameters and
has the opportunity to improve the model as well as
validate it. My advice to such people will be to go for
PhD in the area of their interest matching with the
departmental goals. There are so many areas still
unexplored. Working for a PhD will help them gain the
expertise and satisfy their appetite for research. In my
view the work that directly affects the delivery is most
relevant and must be the ultimate reason for
satisfaction.
Q. Your words of wisdom for trainees ready to
join DAE?
A. I would say that there are plenty of challenges for
enhancing the quality of life of our people to reach
developed status. Everyone should think about what
he or she can do for the enhancing the quality of life.
DAE provides work fronts and opportunities to
address these issues through scientific and
technological means. It has brought the nation
strength and deliverables in the area of electricity
generation, health security, food security, drinking
water, high end technologies, education research and
training, and national security. One should always be
ready to contribute to nation's growth and for raising
the level of our existence in the international
community.

A. I have always found inspiration in freedom

A. You have freedom of work in DAE. When you
join a group, you are allowed to do anything
within the mandate of the group, maybe not on
the first day but surely after 2-3 yrs. As long as you
are within the goals of the department you will get
a free hand to work. Choose an area which will
give you satisfaction. After 5-7 years, change the
domain of your work because there are limited
horizons left to explore in the same field when you
have spent this much length of time. The best part
of my career is I did not have to repeat any task
and that is what DAE can provide you.
We: Rather than pursuing a full time scientific
research, why did you choose an
administrative role?
Sir: If you have joined an organization, you aspire
to reach the top. When you lead a team there will
be some administrative work. As the team size
increases the administrative work increases.
Being the director I still do 20% scientific work
and rest is administrative i.e. I play a techno-
administrative role.
Over these years my area of involvement has
varied from writing codes, performing
experiments, design, construction, project
management and also helping operations. Every
step has added more administrative
responsibility.
Q. A full scale package is not availed to
trainees. What is the possibility of on-job
training for SOs recruited via OCES & DGFS
scheme?
A. Rs. 20,000 of pay per month, I agree it is lower
than at the SO/C grade. We will discuss this
matter. The date of last revision needs to be
checked before coming to any suitable conclusion.
We: Sir, the pay scale offered during training
in other PSU's is full salary at respective grade
pay.
Sir: As mentioned we will discuss this and

confirm the facts.
Q. Organizations are effectively using media

acceptance? Your take on this and special
initiatives required in this direction.
A. Nuclear Energy, basically 'radiation', is the fear
of unknown. They say everything started with a
big bang. Similarly nuclear energy emerged with
two big bangs (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and this
origin is the reason of people being very
apprehensive of it. The exploitation of Nuclear
Energy is for safe power generation and other
applications.
Indians are known to posses' high tolerance level
and are ready to accept any amount of deficiency
in their living standards, but not ready to invite
any new technological breakthrough that can
enhance living. But tomorrow, when coal and oil
will be exhausted, Renewable Energy and Nuclear
Energy will be the only way out. Solar and Wind
Energy are less efficient at this stage while hydel
projects require much land to be flooded, a major
concern for a populous country like India.
Henceforth, considering big expansions, Nuclear
Energy will be the savior and we are one of the
most advanced nations in the nuclear map with
well developed Reactor and fuel cycle
technologies.
Q. Many trainees realize mismatch between
their interest and job profile offered. Given
opportunity in the field of interest, they will
work efficiently and contribute more for the
organization. The prospect of inter division
transfer/collaborations being limited; what
is your advice for us?
A. As of today you all are not very well aware of
your own interest as well as divisional activities.
You know very little of what is there in front of you.
Later when you are completely involved in a group
or divisions actively, you will find that things are
very flexible and you will surely find a job of
interest within it. As an energetic young scientific
officer, try to fit in the organization and settle
down first and I am sure you will be satisfied with
your job. Transfer after a few years is possible.
Q. Sir, you are known to execute and deliver
projects within stipulated time? How have
you been able to perform continuously
despite facing constraints associated with a
strategic governmental organization?
A. Yes, there are constraints. But anything can be
achieved, just keep trying. My attitude has been
'Never say die'. Even if you fail ten times, you will
surely succeed on the eleventh attempt. One must
refrain from finding reasons for why things
cannot be done. Find ways to accomplish them.
Another reason is that I have been able to build
teams, group of motivated people like you with

Q. Your words of wisdom for trainees ready to
join DAE?
A. Well I'd like to say three things:
- You are our future.
- You are very lucky to join a place where
Science and Technology merges.
- Also, you are lucky to join a place where you
can serve Science as well as your nation
and you can do that while you get
reasonable emoluments.
But having said that, I would like to add, enjoy your
life, especially when you are young, as lost time is
never going to come back. Dont take studies and
projects too seriously to upset you at any point of
time. Keep trying and itll happen but while doing
that, enjoy as much as you can! Try to remain
happy all the time!

 The Reunion of the Manhattan Project
It was another usual day in the Training
School, tiring and brain storming. I came back
from my classes and was very exhausted. That
day it was raining so heavily in Mumbai that we
could hardly see anything through the window.
This made the weather perfectly suited for a
good nap and I fell fast asleep.
Suddenly there was a knocking at the door. I
thought it was one of my batch mates calling
me. I would always get irritated by such calls
as the urgency of calls was much lesser than
the nature by which they were made but that
night the knocking continued most unusually. I
would also get the faint smell of a cigar.
Suddenly I could see (in my sleep) some
streaks of torch light peeping through my door.
It was quite unusual and astonishing for me. I
woke up with a jump hurriedly and banged my
door open. But there was no one to be seen.
Far away in the corridor I saw a man in a long
black coat. The coat seemed a bit dusty and
shabby as his long white hair. I was in a shock as
nowadays men do not look like that. He
couldn't balance himself as his head seemed to
be bigger as compared to his body. As he
strolled towards the lift I quietly followed him
with my mind filled with curiosity and a
strange fear. He knew that I was following him
and he looked back at me but unfortunately I
couldn't get a glimpse of his face. To my
amazement, I saw the lift stop at the 14th
floor. Now I was overwhelmed with curiosity.
To avoid being seen by the man I took the stairs
to the 14th floor. The suspense grew as I
missed my chance to solve the mystery. As I
reach the 14th floor I saw that the man
entered the VIP hall. I quickly went up to him.
There was a peculiar smell, probably a
mixture of cigar, sampan overall like an
aristocratic party of the old western times. As
I moved through the smoky hall I saw a red
banner where it was written

There was a voice, which greeted me with a
warm welcome, and as the smoke cleared out I
finally had a chance to see the man's face. I
recognized him it was a similar face from my
science book, he was Albert Einstein! I couldn't
believe; it was like a dream. Then I slowly
realised that the surrounding men were none
other than the popular names of the
Manhattan Project, the people who shook the
world by their knowledge.
A deep voice offered me a sampan. I humbly
refused but at last I had to take it. Someone
from the corner said, Relax my boy, you know
I have been here before. Dr. Bhabha invited
me to this research institute in the year 1960.
I stood silent and in amazement. I could not
even nod my head as I found he was Prof. Niels
Bohr. He again asked me about my training
school. I looked down and in a low voice and
murmured, It's too hard for me, Sir. The load
is tremendous.
My answer was replied with a laughter that
filled the hall. Prof. Bohr said, My son, it is
not even a fraction of what we have faced
during the Manhattan Project.
I replied, Actually the syllabuses are huge
and time is too short that we face difficulty in
digesting them so most of the time we tend to
vomit it out.
Smoking a cloud from his pipe another man
remarked, Syllabus! What syllabus? You are
just dividing science by using this word and
bounding your knowledge but, my boy,
knowledge has no limit. It was very easy to
know the man was Prof. Fermi. I felt a little
ashamed.
Suddenly in the corner the man who was
playing the bongo, stopped and shouted, Hey
man, where is the madness of learning in the
young generation or do you love what you do
actually? I at once knew the man; he was the
most handsome scientist Prof. Feynman.
I was taken aback, I was astonished as I had
never thought of this. I started to give an
excuse to find my way-out, Home sickness,
sir.
Home sickness? I haven't seen my family since
8 years since we left Germany; later, a news
confirmed that they were executed in a Gas
chamber. A sorrowful voice came out from
the right corner, he was the great Prof. James
Franck.
Another man stood from the chair and said,
I'm Max Planck, you must have heard about
me. I lost two daughters in child birth, one son
died in the World War-I and another one in
World War II, but your nuclear science helped
me to stay alive, it is the only thing I will have
with me till death and you are talking about
load? I had had more sleepless nights than your
training school days because I loved it.
Tear rolled down his cheeks, I could feel his
pain. I felt a warm hand on my right shoulder
and heard, My uncertainty principle is also
applicable to human life, when there is
happiness in life we can't sense pain and when
we are immersed in pain we have to search for
the slightest of happiness but as a matter of
fact how do you balance these two in life
makes you what you are. I felt some relief
and knew he was none other than Prof.
Heisenberg.

and would die for it. Hearing that, the
feeling that I had inside me could be
expressed in one word as 'satisfaction'.
The knocking continued incessantly like the
rain outside. Someone cried from the other
side, Sahab, darwaja kholo room saaf karna
hai. The noise woke me up; I rubbed my eyes
and looked around for a minute. I looked at my
watch. Oh! I had only ten minutes to get ready
for my classes!
But on my way to the class my curiosity
changed my destination from class to 14th
floor VIP hall but there was nothing. As I was
making my way back downstairs, I was
naturally disappointed, the most beautiful
experience of my life was just merely a dream
but suddenly, I found a small piece of a paper
on the floor in front of me. I took it up. It

there any musician in Manhattan project? But Subhashis Dutta, Instrumentation
then I realised that the man with violin was
none other than my hero Albert Einstein. He
smiled in his own fashion and asked, What is
your desire? We are ready to give you that.

Without taking much time I said, I want to be

as intelligent as you are.

He agreed to give his intelligence to me but

then Prof. Fermi interrupted, Albert! Don't
just paralyse him; allow him to stand on his
own feet.Albert replied, Then in that case
let's get that distributed across each floor of

 An Endless Journey...
One day I was moving a stone, may be one
meter in diameter; inch by inch, continuously
where ever I went, whatever I did. I didn't
know why I was moving it but I have been
moving it as long as I can remember. I never
got consciously involved; it was as if I was
moving the stone in a parallel universe of
which I knew nothing and was not much
interested to know either. But today was
different; a sudden jerk while pushing the
stone made me realize my actions. I saw that I
was pushing the stone towards a mountain. I
tried very hard to find a reason for my actions
but of no use. I was not able to come up with
any reasonable answer. Coupled with
frustration and fear of ignorance I convinced
myself that I would get the answers once I
pushed the stone to the mountain top.

I then had only two options left; to push the
stone here-and-there endlessly, without
meaning or purpose; or to commit suicide. I
started to wonder about my old days, when I
never consciously thought of why I was
pushing the stone. Ignorance really is bliss! I
wish I could go back to old ignorant days
again!
After some thought I came to the conclusion
that may be life really doesn't have any
meaning. Still, I may myself give meaning to it.
Maybe it is self-delusional, but at the end
happiness is what that matters. Even if I die, I
may not get my answer, so why not live happily
in my delusional world?

Soon this became my sole aim. I pushed the
stone harder and harder. Sometimes I thought
that I should give up, but the quest for truth,
coupled with fear of ignorance of my own
actions pushed me towards my goal. While
pushing the stone, I realized how little I knew
about the world in which I live; a world with
which I thought was quite familiar with until
recently. The things which had made sense till
now did not make sense any more.
Also I would now have the freedom to give
different meanings to life at different points of
time. In fact I started to think of myself as a
rebel, always trying to give a meaning to my
meaningless world.
I am Sisyphus, and this is my story.

Finally the day came when I was able to push

the stone to the mountain top. The view was so - Niranjan Siva Sankaran
beautiful; I was able to see the whole Radiological Safety Engineering
unfamiliar terrain. But soon my happiness
and excitement died when I realized that I still
had no answers. Out of frustration I tried to
abandon the stone, but the realized that my
very survival depended on that stone.
Without pushing that stone I would die.

Maybe I push the stone to live. But why do I

live?

The world I live in does not make sense any

more- do I live to push the stone? Can the
meaning of my life be this silly, pushing a

 The Quest
We have often experienced the buzz of a bee and at
times have found it irritating and disturbing. But
then, there is an altogether different perspective
about them, of being a symbol of a unified family.
The fact that worker bees belonging to a hive elect a
queen, take special care of her until she matures and
work together to support the queen is seriously
thought provoking. Isn't it? All this is done, to insure
her life and importantly, the continuation of the
colony. Now, this is symbolic of a family working
together for the benefit of the group. In short, bees
personify teamwork.
The team in whites with an upturned collar
possessed it. This team had all the essential
ingredients right from a red capped mentor cum
player and an able and sacrificial leader who had an
imperfect handlebar moustache to a blistering pace
bowler with a rib-tickling voice. A bespectacled
marauding opener, an intense no.3 with a dozen
younger brothers, a pinch-hitter who took off my
beloved gloves, a fielder with nimble feet and gym
body, a burly man with consistent line and length and
finally a seam bowler who has a problem counting
numbers especially the number of balls in an over
completed by the team. The lanky attacking batsman
from defense, the dancing bowler from Govandi, the
fish junkie also an underrated batsman, and the
promising chemical lad equally played their part
undauntedly but in phases.
On a serious note, more than the matches
played in the tournament, it was the series of
gruelling practice sessions in the sultry weather
comprising the favorite ground running, long
stretching and warm-up exercises, fielding drills,
batting-bowling sessions in an unprepared pitch
(especially the new ball hurled at openers) which
stands vivid in my memory. After all, the quest was no
bed of roses and hence demanded a strong
homework. The fact that, almost 6-7 of us had never
played cricket with a cricket ball made these training
sessions very crucial which is why most of us never
skipped it. These sessions which enabled us to go this
far and brought in us a sense of confidence, urge and
most importantly taught us to play as a single unit
with a single minded goal just the way the bees do.
The cricket ball matches played at 'Free
Entrance Waalla' (FEW) Stadium bring adrenaline
rush into me which takes a while to settle down. The
tournament for us was like a roller coaster ride. The
kick-off was not less than a disaster. Bowlers rescued
and redeemed the ship. Long breaks in between the
first two matches also helped our cause. In the 2nd and
3rd match, batsmen also got into the groove, ably
supporting the match winning bowlers who were
always a tough nut to crack. Just when, we were
looking to cruise over, the unfortunate thing
happened. The champion opponents did it better in
the quarter finals with full points to them, as they
found a chink in the armour. By then, the team had
already learnt the lesson of life.
The humongous support from the TSH
inmates during the course of tournament, especially
from the 3rd and 4th floors worked wonders for us. The
direct throw run-out from 60 odd meters, a batsman
diving to save his wicket (who had never ever dived his
entire life), a few bowlers bowling wide tirelessly (this
being a strategy) were just remarkable.
The charisma of both our players and supporters is
worth mentioning. The overwhelming celebrations in
a brash manner post any dismissal (to which the poor
umpires pleaded to end), sledging against the elder
opponent batsman (who might have well turned out
to be our bosses in the near future), sledging against
an opponent fielder by our supporters to end our
frustrating boundary drought, the huddle before the
start of bowling session and finally most importantly
the female fan base of our team will find a special
mention in the cricketing folklore of Anushakti nagar.

Starting of a Beautiful Journey
They are known to be the toughest
interviews in India. They are known to be the
longest lasting technical interviews in India.
The panels are known as rejection panel than
selection panel. Yes, I am talking about BARC
interviews.
It was 15th of May when they told me that you
have got called for BARC interview. Ek
Berojgar ke liye isse badi khushkhabri aur
kya ho sakti hai. I was happy to hear some
contradictory statements from various
people, Abe tera kaise ho gaya, Pass hone
me to dam nikal jata tha and Bhai tumhara
nahi hoga to kiska hoga, man se to tumhi
padhte the. Anyway, I was happy and very
much confident of getting selected and
started working on my favourite subjects viz.
Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat and
Mass Transfer, etc. I did not search for any
interview questions or sought any help as I
knew only my concepts will help me. I needed
nothing else.
The interview was on 6th of June and I
reached a day earlier and took rest at a
friend's place. The next day, as usual, I woke
up later than scheduled and found out that I
have shoes but socks. I thanked the almighty
for this mercy as I hate wearing shoes. So, I
put on My Sandals (One with strap and the
other without it!) and headed for Mankhurd
local station, nearest to the BARC facility. I
fell in love with Mumbai. After reaching the
Multi Purpose Hall, the reporting place, they
asked us to fill up loads of forms asking for a
plethora of information about candidates. As
usual, fir se neend aa gayi. Kisi Bhali ladki ne
dhakka dekar jagaya. May god give her a very
good and loving groom! After completing the
formalities, we left for the interview.
Alas, why did I choose mechanical as my
branch! All the other sides were having
sincere, beautiful girls studying, discussing
amongst the fellow interviewees. Yaha to
hum sab adhiktar hawa khaate baithe the.
Some were still discussing problems and were
revising their subjects. Getting bored, I asked
a volunteer that how many people do they
select on an average per day? He answered,
Yesterday they took only one, the day before
that two and the day before that, none. Today
they have already taken three, lagta hai aaj
ka quota poora ho gaya.
Oops! With little bit analysis I found that they
must be interviewing at least 70-80 aspirants
a day. Now I seriously started considering to
utilize my time in touring Mumbai than giving
the Interview. But still I waited. Then came
my turn. I checked my wristwatch and it said
03:56 PM. Andar paanch daitya baithe hue
the. After welcoming and pacifying me, they
started their most beloved leisure time
activity. (Believe me fellas, they love
interviewing. If you actually make it to BARC,
you will find that the first interview was the
simplest one.) They asked me my favourite
subjects and as I answered, they said, on
paper. They will give you a paper and pencil
even to say good morning and bye if they can.
So I answered-
Thermodynamics.

Heat and Mass Transfer.
?
Fluid Mechanics (Now they say we know the
?
abbreviations too, Kitni jaldi hai inhe
interview lene ki bhaai).

The supposedly most senior scientist asked
What about Strength of Materials and I said,
Sir, I am not thorough with that subject
(Man mein Bhagwan kasam kuch nahi aata
SOM me)
They now started asking questions from Fluid
Mechanics, very basic questions. None of
them needed concepts more than Pascal's
Law, Continuity Equation, Viscosity, Surface
Tension etc. but definitely needed a thorough
understanding which will comes if you have
the love for learning. Even an Eleventh grader

could have answered all the questions if well
studied and even PhD fellows won't be able to
answer if they do not have an in-depth
knowledge. Then came Heat and Mass
Transfer, not crossing the limits of basics of
conduction and convection, Thermodynamics,
again within the ambit of Zeroth, First Law
and the understanding of various processes.
Bade gurudev ko shanti nahi mil rahi thi to
SOM poonch hi liya and I answered it correctly.
Then came concepts of mechanics which I
studied well earlier followed by RAC.
The most important thing they sought was my
approach towards the problem and my
analytical abilities. If I was unable to answer
at first, they helped me by asking a similar
question. They gave me ample time to think
and answer and I needed to have a very good
understanding of graphs. Oh yes, I just love
graphs and prefer them over ugly equations.
Generally they also have some interest in
derivations and even more in the assumptions,
although they didn't ask me anything as such.
By this time I was nearly sure that I am going to
get selected. Snacks came, which they offered
me. Mai to wahi baith kar shuru ho gaya. Then
they politely asked me to sit outside while
having my snacks. I came outside and checked
my watch. It was already 05:20 p.m. and I was
amused to know that as I thought that only 20-
25 minutes would have elapsed. This is the
kind of friendly environment you would get
inside.
After few minutes, they called me in and gave
me the most sought after piece of paper, the
white slip, ensuring that I am capable enough
to join this prestigious institute (Except in the
case of being medically unfit :-) ).
That day, New Bachelor Hostel gave this
bachelor an immense pleasure and a great
opportunity. Only time will tell how much I
would be able to encash it.

 Never Ever In The TSH!
1. Be Note less: No
matter how much sharp you
are in understanding the
concepts, the ground reality is
that if you don't have a proper
record of what has been taught
in the class or have a friend who
can lend you his/her notes, you are
bound to get ensnared in the whirlpool. But
be ready to shed your weight and money for
going to the Xerox shop at Hastinapur.
2. Be previous year question paper-less:
No matter how less/ more you know about the
subject, if you have solved the previous year
papers, then nobody can stop you from
securing good marks. And if you are lucky
enough, then you can find the exact replica of
the question in your exam.
3. Attempt to skip a class: The first eight
months of the training school is literally a rat
race. You are absent one day (and not smart
enough to get a proxy), your marks+ stipend+
coursework, all is gone by one casual leave.
4. Criticize the mess food: Learn to follow
stupid rules like one can't take more than two
cubes of butter. The mess people will fool with
you till the first semester as they have been
doing till ages. Then one fine day, after
numerous trials and errors, the menu will
change and you will be able to have a
digestible food. But the gourmet amongst
us will still be lamenting.
5. Ask for the Luxury Items: Asking a
washing machine per floor or rather a water
cooler will be a tough nut to crack. You must
adapt yourselves to such conditions/
situations and not beat about the bush with
the authorities.
6. Be Iron/ Laptop/ Kettle/ Smartphone/
Internet Dongle-less: The above mentioned
things are nothing less than your saviours. But
if you are among those who can manage to
either borrow/ beg / steal it from your friend's
place, then no problems.
7. Wear only jeans on your birthday night: At
least wear some pyjama/ lower/ another pair
of jeans if you don't want to regret later.
Shoes/ Chappals/ Belts/ bats will be caressing
you after the cake cutting ceremony.
8. Expect great Library/ Sports Services: The
Sports room more of a Visitors place than a
hosteller's. In between numbers exhibitions/
events/ seminars/ days where there are no
racquets etc, finding yourself playing in the
sports room is a dream come true. The TSH
library is more of a reading room than a place
where one issues books or gets some stuff
photocopied.
9. Remain Reclusive: Be gregarious. Make
friends and be amicable. Friends are the ones
who will help you through thick and thin. The
friends made here will be there for the rest of
our lives.
10. Expect great vacancies: Throughout the
year many people will give you lots of hope
and lots of encouragement but ultimately the
real boss is the Director.
11. Expect scientists to be boring: They are
some of coolest and the most interesting
bunch of peoples you will ever come by.

EXPERIENCES IN TRAINING SCHOOL
The BARC job offer letter arrived. When I
received the letter, it was a good news, but I was
not sure whether joining the organization
would be good for me. A little surfing on the
internet, interaction with professors and friends
convinced me to a fair degree that it is a good job
and that I should choose it over the other job
which I had in my hand. So I decided to join BARC
as a Trainee. Come August 2014, I would be
completing this journey called BARC Training
Program and would be absorbed into what we
call the 'DAE family'. This sojourn here in
Training School has produced so many
occasions of fun and frolic and made me
experience so many new things that they will
always remain as memories to cherish
throughout my life.
Being a fresher, I had expected things to be the
same in Training School as well and over and
above I had a lot of expectations from the
organization. For the starters, I preferred a
single room as I was used to the luxury of single
occupant rooms for the last four years of
engineering. I also wanted a good data
connection and LAN connectivity as I am very
used to these facilities and never still believe I
can live without them. But I had come prepared
for the worst also. On arriving here, we had a
small briefing where the Director, BARC
addressed us. I remember him saying that while
studying is very important, don't take training
school all that seriously and get lost in the
academia. Enjoy your stay here as well. It
appears to me that I did neglect the former part
and only latched on to the latter part of
enjoying.
To my expectations, I got a single occupancy
room nearly twice the size I had lived before in
college, and an internet browsing center to
browse and keep myself updated. That meant
good accommodation, freedom to watch movies,
TV series, matches, listening to music and
pursue my hobbies without disturbing the
others around. The other trainees soon became
good friends. It was deja-vu all over again. A
new hostel life was underway and I have always
enjoyed it. Food and notes were not the only
things we exchanged. We also physically
exchanged hard-disks, for TV series and Movies
and we became the so called the 'seeders and
leachers' of our network. That circumvented the
n e e d f o r L A N c o n n e c t i v i t y. P e r s o n a l
introduction was a window to get to know other
peoples interests and to participate in those
activities of common interest.
During these interactions, I discovered an
assortment of people. I discovered many
players, cricketers being the most common. I
found many liking the same TV series and some
football fans. I have also found Dexter, Teen
Wolf, and the all famous Sherlock fans and we
regularly watch them together. I have a close
knit of football friends, a Liverpool fan with
whom I enjoy watching matches with and an
Arsenal fan to poke fun at when his team loses.
When the latter feels that I am going to poke fun
at him, he beats me by the punch by talking
about the loss my team had. It is all in a very
positive attitude that we discuss football and
enjoy the game week in and week out. I also
enjoyed practicing with the BARC football team.
They have been immensely responsible in
improving my style of play, my technical ability
and improving my confidence. Another
memorable outcome that has happened
through this endeavor was that I had a chance
to play in the inter-departmental football
tournament. To pull on the No.9 jersey and play
at that level was not something I had ever
imagined to have happened. I had never quite
held a Table tennis racquet before coming here.
I started playing the game and now I feel I can
play fairly well though I personally would like to
improve a lot more.
In my childhood, I learnt to play the violin and
did indulge in some jamming sessions in college.
However, nothing positive really came out of it.
Here in Training School also we have formed a
band. Initially I was a little reluctant to join, but
the support and encouragement given by the
other band members has helped me in bringing
out the latent talent in me and we work together
for performing on the stage. I will cherish these

memories always. Birthdays and festivals were
just as fun and the birthday bumps were just as
painful as they used to be. The surprise gifts
were the consolation after the blitzkrieg attack
onto our bottoms. The DJs that we used to
organize in my floor were a platform for even the
most reticent of individuals to open up and
express themselves freely.
Though I have only spoken all along about extra-
curricular activities, one may wonder if I ever
studied. Yes, I did on the night before exams. I
have kept the tradition of eleventh hour
preparation and lived up to my expectations. I
secured a modest mid table rank and I am
pleased with the division I am going to join.
There have been moments of large successes as
well, especially those areas in which I have
always had a passion to learn. The efforts of
many of my friends have gone into getting that
result. The group study and question solving
sessions has helped each other and especially
me. Their contribution will always be
remembered.
This journey has been a revelation of my abilities
and my true interests. I have been able to utilize
my time here effectively in improving myself
overall. It wouldn't have been possible without
opportunities and the environment provided by
the BARC and the Training School. Today I can
undoubtedly say that I am better than before. A
lot of individuals, friends and faculty have been
influential in whatever little bit I have achieved
here, so that they will always be remembered.
This was just my story but I am sure everyone
who has gone through the Training School will
have a similar story to say.
My journey doesn't end here. I still have a few
more months here to learn or do something new.
Who knows you could find me on the perch of a
tree with an SLR round my neck or in a swimsuit
learning to swim!

Some Facts about TSH
1. The Alarming Situation: You don't have to use
alarms here. Either you get so used to
intermittent false alarms that you are totally
unperturbed when your alarm rings or you are so
bugged by it that you are already awake the whole
night.
2. The Unwanted Guests: No matter where you
hide you food-in the cupboard, or the drawers,
monkeys will have their best time when they are
in the mood to celebrate.
3. The Biased Lift: The lift will never stop at your
floor when its going down but it will always stop
when its going up (Girls: O)
4. Strict Timings: Library tests your nocturnal
abilities when you are totally resolved on a
weekend and you reach there only to find a
reference copy.
5. The Blinking Hope: The LAN ports in your room
and the consistently blinking lights of the WiFi
routers installed all over the place always give
you the false hope that one fine day you will be
able to access the internet right there sitting on
your bed comfortably. Don't worry, TSH mein der
hai, andher nahi.
6. Those Delicious Dishes: Mana ki doosro ki thali
main hamesha ghee zada dikhta hai, par yahan to
bahut kuch zada dikhta hai. If you look at others'
(I mean, guests) plate, you will never be able to
eat another bite from your own.
7. The Natual Beauty: No matter how tired you are,
how bagged down by the load of studies you get,
the scenic beauty of the campus and the
luxurious rooms will drive you away.
8. The Longing Attachment: And the last but not
the least, no matter what you say about the place,
you will always miss it right from the day you
leave it.

 And finally...
I thought of writing on some heated topics in
our magazine like research and development,
Communism, political India, education,
Nuclear India and so on. But finally I came to
the conclusion that writing on such topics
would end up in plagiarism which as a scientist
we should not encourage ourselves. So here I
want to share with you some thoughts and
experiences I had in the Training School.
Thoughts;
I believe that reasonable thinking and critical
questioning are the ways by which we can
upgrade our knowledge and hence pave the
way to the scientific development of the
nation. Putting up a big dream and working for
its achievement is what matters the most.
There is no dream which cannot be achieved
and there is no question which remains
unanswered. The universe is the solution to
everything. It is our duty to discover the
hidden story behind the phenomenon and
invent the most efficient solution. People of
the country have laid in us the responsibility to
serve them by fruitful scientific researches
which would ultimately lead to their
upliftment. We should always understand that
whatever we have learned here is not only for
our personal benefit but also for the nation as
a whole for it is the people's money on which
we live. So we must do our work with passion
regardless of where we are posted.
Experiences;
The fire alarms which reminds of its presence
whenever it feels, the Wi-Fi router which
displays all colors, the lift for which 2 out of 3
concept always work, the photocopying
machine which goes out of order exactly
during exam days, 2 clocks at the ground floor
which never display the Indian standard time,
the sports room for which the height is such
that most of the times the badminton shuttle
hits the ceiling, etc. are some of the auxiliary
features of Training School Hostel. Potato
filled items are one of the main features of its
mess. Our compound has been an active
habitat for lots of monkeys. I am happy to
announce that some of my friends have
discovered a 'philosophical monkey' which sits
at north-west corner of our building.
Our courses in training school revolve around
the major two events which occurred in the
world in recent past, Fukushima accident and
LHC experiment. It was like once you know
these, then you are through.
To me TSH is one of the destinations in India
where actually the concept of unity in
diversity exists. We have been here for one
year knowing and respecting each other's
culture, tradition and languages. We are
going to miss some of them as they are posted
far from us. At some point of time we will
recognize that the days spent here were some
of the most beautiful in our life.
Final comment;
Friends, as we are supposed to be the most
intelligent section of the society and as
people who earn far more than an average
individual, it would be a great help if we could
give a helping hand to at least one among the
million people who cannot satisfy his/ her
basic needs in life.

 THE GARDEN OF LOVE (GULISTAN - E- ISHQ)
Mumbai, the world of uncertainties, in its
uncanny bewitching glamour tempts one to foster
his dreams in the lap of this huge monster. For
some, dreams are cradled in its merciful hands and
for some; they are ripped off to rubble. Fate
changes here with every passing second, where
persons flying are thrown down, and where
downtrodden reach heights. In this mysterious
ocean overloaded with ambitions of people, there
is competition of thoughts and every thought
process is weighed and scaled by super mind of
Mumbai.
What should be said of those rainy days we
arrived here first, as if we were received with
yearning eyes drenched in tears of love.
Romantically inspiring were the strolls down the
roads in the campus to the extent that it cajoles
one to come in its lap again. Interview results out, I
told Nazir, dearest friend of mine, darling Mumbai
is calling back, i got selected. Exuberance filled
the atmosphere followed by calmness implying
agony of separation, meanwhile, Sajad (friend
with whom i always debate on mystical and
philosophical topics) reciting Rumi's mystical
metaphors in his usual motivating way trying his
best to allay the feeling of separation erupting in
Nazir's heart, at least temporarily. Things were
turning emotional; tears almost welled down my
eyes which I somehow managed to control.
Night came, every one slept with calmness.
I looked at the face of Nazir, so pious and so
innocent; tomarrow onwards who would supplant
his inspiring face, I said to myself. Mind was
burning with thoughts of expectations, heart was
agonising in love. Stars solacing my grief by
twinkling, moon looked at me with smiling face as
if someone with selfsame moony face is waiting for
me since long to calm my agony in her lap, with this
hope I slept driving my soul into the world of
beautiful dreams. Tomorrow morning I stood on the
platform waiting for the train that possibly would
change my journey, leaving to a place I don't know
anyone. Train arrived and I boarded on, turning
back to Nazir, who with a faint smile somehow
managed on his lips bade me farewell and I left to
find hope in Mumbai.
With full congestion, the roads probably
around the Poshbag, gave first glimpse of what
would be the future life here. I somehow waded
through and reached to MTS; room was allotted on
temporary basis and I have to share it with Ashu.
We had fruitful deliberations about marriage, love,
infatuation, relationships and of course
speculation of beauties we going to face and much
more. while sitting in supine position on the chair,
thinking useless things; at least for now, observing
outside. Suddenly I caught sight of one beautiful
girl dressed like kashmiri pheren, long tunics which
almost touched the ground, of green colour with
shaded of some other colour. I was immediately
smitten, I told Ashu that future is colourful waiting
for me.
Next day in LHM I saw her again, this time
closely; more appropriately she stood beside me.
She looked like a fairy dancing in blooming Tulip
garden of Srinagar, I saw mystery in her sunken
eyes, oh! They were like Dal Lake and I drowned in
them and sacrificed my life. Her eyebrows were
like Tipu sultan's sword just killing me in a single
jolt, or like a bow targeting Arjun's arrow from her
doe-eyes piercing my heart. Her face glittering
with divine light illuminating me with lessons of
love. Her ivory neck decorated with necklace, held
upright for my lips to touch her jugular, to infuse
feeling of love in her every sigh. Her glossy hair
drifted with a slight breeze annoying her face by
shading it, sparing it from outside wicked eyes. She
suddenly caught my gaze, glanced away with
imperceptible smile on her lips. She already had
sown seeds of love in my heart to flourish as time
passes. In the meantime one verse of Momin (poet)
came to my mind:
Tum mere pass hote ho goya
Jab koi doosra nahein hota
(O! beloved when you are with me i feel
As if no one exists except you)
Dusk approached, fading her face away
from my eyes. I entered my room, quite spacious
for one year to live. In spite of bitterness of its
mystery, memory of first love stirs one's ebers of
imagination. Hundreds of nights passed in solitude,
now it started transforming into happy moments
filled with music from her lips, like poetry of real
life seeping from ears to heart. I find secrets of
love revealing itself. Through her own beauty, she
taught me to worship it, to admire it, to crave for
it. Midnight burned with these imaginations, I
woke up at dawn filled with the feeling of love

nurturing in my heart, with agony of craving I felt
in night, and hope of divine accord between our
hearts cemented with love.
Days passed on, feeling of breeze filled
with perfume of her hair as if coming through
romantic snowy Gulmarg started soothing me in
this scorching heat. Did my soul reach out to, oh! I
don't know her name yet; let us call her Pari
(fairy), Pari of my dreams, on the day we met. Was
it love, or intoxication of youth which fancied me?
Did my youth blind me, did I get enchanted by her
bright eyes or grace of her figure. Did I get
entangled in her serpentine locks; these questions
are hard to answer yet. Every time I saw her, new
chapter of beauty unfolded before my eyes.
Love transforms one's life transcends one
from this material world to world of heavens, said
one mystic. Isn't it an infatuation, am I not in
delusion, or aren't her momentary glances full of
caprice, minds always boggles me down.
Look I forgot to mention about my other
routine work, i.e. attending classes, of course
with generous, intelligent and polite people.
Among them, DJP with his astute and keen looks on
PPTs always would find mistakes days in and out.
Some of them sleeping, some pretending to be
active and some really active. Mine condition,
eyes on board, thoughts with Pari, fingers busy in
scribbling down poetic verses, body in class room,
soul visualising her.
Scared of deceptive looks, I wonder for the
innocence of Pari. My mind against my heart, I
consoled myself by reciting Dr. Iqbal's verse as
quote:
Khirad ko khabar ke siva kuch nhein
Tera ilaj nazar ke siva kuch nhein
(Mind has information only, to command
Heart sooths by beloved's blessed glance)
Remembering one discussion with my
mysteriously genius friend Syed Aaftab, love is
verb not noun, i.e. you have to do love, no longer
to live in world of fancies. Anything at infancy has
a threat of infliction of damage, so has my love. I
waited for the flower of love to exfoliate, waited
for its fragrance, and longing for its blossom. One
day I turn dubious of her quivering eyes, as love
scares of nothing and it above all rights and
wrongs, does not alter and finds its own ways, I
visualised Shakespeare saying as: Love is not love

which alters when it alteration finds, or bends
with a remover to remove. O no! it is an ever fixed
mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.
These verses solaced me, strengthens my
shoulders to hold unbelievable weight of love.
It was already late, DJP called me for
dinner and we tried to manage our comfort on
otherwise uncomfortable chairs of mess, we took
dinner and in the meantime Nishant,
unconventional lover, came and I persuaded him to
come outside to walk down to Mughal road; as DJP
could not come due to his unusual crunch with
breeze which otherwise is pleasant for all barring
him. We sat at the foot of kohi-hijra (mountain of
loneliness) and I told Nishant, how much I can trust
Pari; As much as you can, she won't deride you, and
you would always find her among the best
trustworthy persons you possibly could have, said
Nishant with full emotional voice. Then let me put
myself into her able hands, to get glorified in the
path of love or slid into the abysmal of dejection.
Nishant in an unusual way interrupted and gently
said; explain to me slowly, so that i could imbibe
every word of love, so that i could drink every drop
of this heavenly wine, so that its drunkenness
could reflect from my deserted eyes, so that its
dew could quench thirst of my parched lips, so
that its breeze could sooth my burning heart,
explain my friend, explain.. i am ready to embrace
love, I long for it, I yearn for it. I could feel the
restlessness in my friend's heart, and i never
probed for it. I reclined on smooth rock and kept
silence for some time; I then started to open my
heart and started explaining Nishant.
Love is sworn in heavens and nurtured in
the hearts of lovers, it passes from beloved's heart
to the loved one, and it is contagious and
intoxicating. Love originates from heavens and has
its roots in the core of universe; the essence of the
universe is love. Every morsel of this universe is
accorded with the force of love, wherever you find
harmony, you would find love and wherever you
find animosity, and you would find lack of love.
Love reduces ego to dust and fills the heart with
compassion and forgiveness, and at the same time
it uplifts one's being and honours him above
angels. A person in love feels this whole universe
immersed in him and yet he remains down to
earth. Love always drenches one's eyes with tears,
with power of every tear drop to drown this whole
universe. A person in love always have downcast
eyes poised to look at this world of distrust and
conflagrate it with its flare, but still burns to
ashes in the fire of its own passions. Love
transforms souls and enlightens one with heavenly
light. The lover renounces in desolation and
suffers pains for beloved's sake, testifying its
selflessness and attribute of altruistic nature.
Love causes one to burn midnights in
remembrance of beloved, and yet guides him
along deceits of day. Love compels one to smile
while heart is agonising. Love sooths the restless
heart by mere glance of beloved. Love makes one
restless upon departing of beloved. Love is
calmness in chaos, yet makes lover restless for
beloved. Love seals lover's lips in silence, and yet
makes him cry in isolation. Love casts smile on
lover's face even in destitution. A lover always
feels rich, in spite of having nothing; as he has
priceless gift of love. A lover would live for love,
die for love and be glorified in the path of love.
It is late and we must leave, I urged
Nishant. But he in his broken voice and with a
sullen face as if some storm has washed away the
fragrance of youth from it replied, Ok! We
must...
You can't expect the snow getting
absorbed into hard stone, similarly, one can't
expect influence of love on stony heart, you have
to crush that stone to powder first, true love has
got the power to do it, advice from my mystic
friend Sajad, who still searches the unity of
existence in this universe at NDRI. As love changed
you from inside, it gets reflected from outlook and
Pari's eyes reflect the same. I could now see the
feeling of longing in her eyes; I could feel the
flutter in her heart.
Time went on faster, agonising me with
fire of passion. One day around late afternoon in
DS, while my eyes were deserted, as they had bled
every drop of blood for her, my throat completely
dry after continuous crying and craving, my lips
parched, I slowly looked at her with my heart
throbbing. As my eyes contacted, her eyes turned
downcast; she stood for a moment with lips
trembling, slightly drifting away that prim of hair
(Kakul) disturbing her face, she lift her eyes
gradually, quivering them away instantly as she
could not sustain direct contact for long, due to,
O! I couldn't guess, may be modesty. I could
imagine Sharukh and Kajol's romantic scene
running in slow motion. With a sudden blush
tingeing her cheeks like a Kashmiri apple, she
opened her lips in an instant smile showing her
glittering teeth, opening up her lips like rose petals
blooming, as there are so like, and filling the
atmosphere round us with heavenly perfume. She
gradually drifted away with the warmth of love
spreading her nerves. I stood there for a moment
relishing that moment and emblazing my heart
with these memories. Suddenly at the end of the
corridor, she stopped momentarily, tried to turn
back, but couldn't at first, then suddenly she
glanced with sparkling eyes, may be teary eyes as I
could not see far from. I realised, a moment of love
is worth centuries of separation. I could understand
the agony Pari was through, which Jigar (poet)
described best:
Ye ishq nhein aasan bas itna samaj lijie
Ik aag ka darya hai aur doob ke jana hai
(Don't think Ishq to be simple, oh! dear
River of fire it is, pass through while drown)
In that river of fire we were both crawling,
with almost no hope of destination. Forgive me,
love itself is an admirable destination. Our hearts
communicated without opening our lips, eyes
reflected its own stories of experience, and every
sigh of ours testified the truth of our love, our
beings uplifted to nothing other than embodiment
of love.
Close to the prescribed time given by
nature to us for love, we transcended that to
eternity. Ours bodies may be parted, our souls are
united. We may be haunted, there is always love to
solace us. Pari had a tinge of anxiety shaded on her
face, implying lots of things. She could dictate a
book of ghazals (poems) through her eyes in a single
glance, but now full of sorrow. I could not translate
her glances into words, but as my emotions
erupting through my eyes, the drop of tears fell on
the paper changed to words read as:
I pined for you long, O beloved
I yearned for you, here and there
In Dal lake, Nishat, in valley of love
Come my beloved I long for you
I smelled your fragrance, you are near
Come with a dagger and pierce my heart
Inflicted pain I take blessing from you
Come my beloved, I long for you.

 Paradox
If God is all-powerful and can do anything, can
he create a rock he himself can't lift?
Both sides of the argument seem equally
compelling, but are simultaneously
impossible. That impossibility lies at the heart
of paradoxes; a mysterious set of statements
which fascinate, puzzle and perplex, leaving
you no peace till you can explain them. Until
then, this helps:
Contradictions don't exist. If you find one,
check your assumptions, and one of them
will be wrong.

As fresh entrants into science, it is imperative
to develop clear, logical thought that remains
untarnished by wrong assumptions. Indeed,
science itself has a huge set of paradoxes
(several resolved now) the hydrostatic
paradox, the twin paradox, the EPR paradox,
the tea-leaves paradox to name just a few. To
all of them, the same rules apply no wrong
assumptions + no bad logic => no paradox.
Here are some of the common paradoxes in
the field of Mathematics:
1. Consider three biased die A, B and C. If A is
more likely to throw up a larger number than
B, and B is more likely to throw up a larger
number than C, then A must obviously be likely
to throw up a number larger than C, right?
After all, probabilities are numbers, and the
transitive law (if A>B and B>C, then A>C)
should hold.
Not quite.
Assume this biasing:
A has sides {2,2,4,4,9,9},
B has sides {1,1,6,6,8,8}, and
C has sides {3,3,5,5,7,7}
Work out the probabilities (using the simple
favorable events/total events approach), lo
and behold!
P(A>B) =0.55
P(B>C)=0.55
P(C>A)=0.55

Once you've broken out the maths and
convinced yourself of its validity, let's analyze
our incorrect assumption.
Probabilities are numbers, but they don't
represent absolute magnitudes. Rather, they
are a relation between two events. Now, while
magnitudes are always transitive, relations
need not be (basic set-relation theory).
Comparing A to B and B to C is fine singly, but
they can't be combined because they are
independent, separate relations. So here our
wrong assumption was that any numbers will
follow the transitive law.
2. Now let's move from mathematical to
logical. Consider a town, where some men
shave themselves, and only the men who don't
shave themselves are shaved by the town
barber. So, does the barber shave himself? We
reach the absurd conclusion, that the barber
shaves himself only if he doesn't shave
himself!
Two approaches explain this paradox. Firstly,
it's clear that the barber is distinct from all
other men. After all, one man doesn't go to any
other man for a shave, only the town barber
welcomes him in. Hence, it's illogical to club
barber and non-barber with regard to
shaving. The second approach assumes that
this clubbing is done and justified. It follows
the reductio ad absurdum principle, which
falsifies any assumption that leads to an
absurd conclusion. And so, very simply, such a
town is impossible.
3. One of the oldest known paradoxes is the
case of Protagoras, a teacher of law in the 5th
century BC. Once his students became
lawyers, their earnings from their first case
would go to him as fee for instruction. This
arrangement worked very well, until one
particular student failed to get any clients.
The impatient (and hungry) Protagoras
decided to sue his former pupil for the amount
due to him. If he won, he would get the money
as pronounced by the court. If he lost, then
 the pupil had won his first case, and he could
claim the money as fee. Either way,
Protagoras saw himself getting his rightful
fee.
The pupil, however, turned to be equally wily
and declared that if he won the case, the
court would deem it unnecessary for him to
pay. If he lost the case, the previous
agreement would come into relevance, and
again, he wouldn't pay.
Who was true? We have another paradox on
our hands, with both sides equally
compelling. On more careful analysis, it
seems that the teacher will get justice. The
event of him suing the student for should be
viewed as independent from the fee
payment, even if the amounts are equal.
The point of this article, however, is not
simply to present interesting paradoxes it is
also to interest and encourage the reader to
solve them for him/herself. With that in
mind, let's go back to the initial God Paradox
(the quote that began this article).

There are no two sets of different laws of nature.
Nature, who is the mother of everything that
exist in this universe, doesn't regulate
individually in terms of either science or
spirituality. Her formulation, her system's
approach is one. Yet we human beings have made
classification, formed categories and separated
nature's modus operandi into two. On the one
side we put scientific organizations, calculative,
discrete bend of mind people and on the other
side we put spiritual organizations, traditional,

religious bend of mind people. This culminates
into an untold battle between the representatives
and believers of both categories, the battle of
taking credit for the progressiveness of the
Humanity. An inexplicable attempt runs for
belittling and non-acknowledging the
contributions of each other towards serving
Humanity. Thus it's a picture of stark contrast, less
uniformity, more confusion and overall low
confidence.

The Great Indian Misunderstanding
One of the most important
characteristic of the Vedic Sanskrit is that a
single word may have multiple connotations.
This may be advantageous from the poetic
point of view as numerous figures of speech
may be incorporated in a single shloka. In spite
of that, the multiple interpretation quality
can lead to many misunderstandings that may
prove detrimental to the health of the
individual or society as a whole.
One of the most famous shlokas of the
Yajurveda is the following
B ra h m a n o a s y a m u k h a m a s i d a b a h u
rajanyakritah.
Uru tadasya yadvaishya padabhyam kshudro
ajayat. (31.11)
It is a beautiful Shloka incorporating different
figures of speech like personification, puns
and of course metaphors but it is one of the
misinterpreted shlokas of the Vedas. This
shloka is a part of the Purush Sukta which
explains how the society must be structured
for it to function properly. It explains the need
for division of labour and thus lays the
foundation of the Indian Caste system.
One may interpret it as the Brahman
originated from the God's brain, Kshatriya
from the God's hands, Vaishya from the God's
stomach and Shudra from the God's legs. So
Brahman and Kshatriya form the upper class
and the rest are lower class. And only the
upper class are allowed to enjoy all the
luxuries and privileges of the society and the
lower caste should be oppressed. It has also
been said that if someone commits a lot of sins
in this birth then he/she is born as a member
of the lower oppressed castes based on the
degree of sins committed.
But the person may have forgotten that to find
out the true meaning of a word in the Vedic
Sanskrit one has to go by the meaning of the
word root. If one goes by this rule then the
Shloka means that all the different
Varnas(Castes) are part of a single body called
the God. The Brahman forms the brain,
Kshatriya forms the hand, Vaishya forms the
stomach and Shudra forms the legs. For the
proper functioning of the whole body, each of
its components must function properly. It is
emphasising equal importance of all the
castes. Thus, the two different
interpretations made here are poles asunder.
This misinterpretation has led to the suffering
of millions of Indians. It has got so much
deeply embedded into the society that even
now we are reluctant to correct it. This is the
tragedy of our nation.
Throughout the Vedas equality in the society
has been repeatedly stressed. The following
Shloka illustrates this
Priyam ma krnu devesu priyam rajasu ma
krnu,
priyam sarvasya pasyata uta sudra utarye.
(Atharva Veda 19-62-1)
The above Shloka states that all the four Varna
should live with harmony and with love. The
main goal of each Varna is to serve the society
and none other than that and each of them has
equal role in the creation of a healthy society.
It also states that every individual irrespective
of one's Varna has to discover one's soul i.e.
self-realisation. Even in Manusmriti it has
been stated that
Shudro brahmanatameti brahmanashchaiti
shudratam.
Kshatriyanjalamevamtu -
vidyadvaishyattathaiva cha.
(Manusmriti 10/65)
Above Shloka says that a Shudra can become a
Brahman by acquiring knowledge (Brahma
gyan), merit, virtuous life etc. Thus, anyone
from any caste can become a member of other
caste through one's Karma and Guna. Thus,
the Shloka signifies the flexibility of the caste
system.
Even though we say that the Vedas are the
ultimate source of all the knowledge we
generally tend to take the wrong knowledge.

Thus, the caste system which was primarily
developed for proper functioning of the
society becomes a tool for oppression of
people for many centuries.
According to the Gita, we are born divine i.e.
in the purest form and gain Moksha (self-
fulfilment) by performing the Karma which we
love the most. It does not matter to which
caste the Karma belongs, a teaching which is
unique to the Vedas. Sadly, we have forgotten
the true meaning of the teachings and
engaged ourselves in oppression of the so-
called lower castes. If such mis-
interpretations had not been taken by us then
at present we would have become the true
superpower of the world. It is true that India is
rich in philosophy, knowledge and tradition
but for the development of a society only
philosophy, knowledge and tradition is not
important. For prosperity we need
professionals which traditionally formed the
lower castes. Thus, they didn't get the
freedom to implement the gained knowledge
to practical use. Thus, the technological
advancement of the society was hindered.
We also exploited the Shudras who keep the
society clean and thus protect us from various
deadly diseases and preventing epidemics.
Hence, the public health never improved.
But in spite of such misinterpretations and
shortcomings, India as a whole has been able
to overcome many technological strides, some
of which has taken the world by awe. Even
though most of Europe and America were
devastated by the Economic Crisis, India has
seen minor repercussions. Even though
reactors in India were not designed for
tsunamis, it was able to survive one without
any problem. This tells us one thing that still
nothing has been lost. Still we can come back
into the world scene as a technologically
advanced and developed country. So, it is an
earnest appeal to the youth of India to put
back all the caste, creed, gender and religious
differences and work harmoniously towards
the Indian success.

 Euthanasia
The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the
first and only legitimate object of good government.
Human Being is indeed a very selfish
creation. When he/she gains something
he/she celebrates and when something is
snatched away from him he/she laments. The
same can be seen when a new life comes out
from the womb of the mother into existence
and when some of our loved ones depart to the
heavenly abode. But why do we celebrate life
and express sorrow in death? The answer may
be that life signifies karma, passion, vivacity,
progress whereas death epitomizes end,
decline and nullity. But what's the use of a life
which is not exemplifying the above
mentioned things but is in deep pain, agony
and torment. What do you think about a life
where there is no chance to recuperate as per
the medical science and death seems to be the
only peaceful option?
We are sometimes taught that pain is good. No
Pains no gains. It is said that pain broadens
the peripheries of our endurance and makes us
ask for more. A student would like to study for
some more time and bear some more pain
because he/she knows that the end result
would be in his/her favor, similarly a fighter
would continue to endure for a longer time to
win the battle.
But what about those who have lost all hopes
... Thomas Jefferson
and are suffering from excruciating pains and
medically no scope of their recovery exists. Do
they deserve to suffer more of this writhing
pain or should they be relieved .The dilemma
exists and so the controversy behind
euthanasia, which can be defined as a
deliberate intervention undertaken with
express ion of intention of ending of a life, to
relieve the uncontrollable suffering. If a
person is in profound excruciating pain and it
is difficult for him/her to sustain, then won't it
be better to relieve him/her from all the pains
and sufferings rather than seeing him/her
struggle for every single breath. But it is
doleful that the Indian Penal Code doesn't
totally understand the difference between
killing and mercy killing. Mercy Killing
includes the consent of the patient and entails
the withholding of common treatments, such
as antibiotics which are necessary for
continuance of life. But sadly, it is being
characterized as suicide or murder or
sometimes as wrongful death or even as
criminal homicide. Since the IPC isn't mature
enough to handle such intricate issues, there
have been cases where mercy killing wasn't
permitted. I know that life and death are not
in the hands of human beings and we are only

mere puppets driven by the whims of the
almighty. But sometimes it is better to take
decisions which, even though being
unconventional makes a strong sense. It is very
hard to even see a person striving for every
iota for his life and one can't even fathom what
that person would be feeling. And it's
somewhat unjustifiable for that person to
bear all the pain. So the question arises
whether voluntary, passive euthanasia be
legalized in a country like ours or not? Though
India won't be the first to ponder over this
delicate issue but we can definitely learn from
certain countries like Netherlands and
Belgium where this practice is legalized under
certain exceptions. The world is changing and
so must we. Taking away the life of a person

might not seem to be the sanest option
especially in a scenario where capital
punishments are looked down upon, but if we
think over it from the point of view of the
sufferer, euthanasia seems to be the only
option left. Euthanasia is not exactly about
giving rights to the person who dies but,
instead, is about changing the law and public
policy so that doctors, relatives and others
can directly end another person's life so that
he/she attains tranquility.

 A Word That
Never Shows Up
What happens when we call something
a by its name? Why should we call a mighty big
black animal 'an elephant'? When an elephant
comes to attack the village, the first man who
sees it can run in panic shouting aloud:
"Elephant, elephant". It is very difficult to use
something like 'a mighty big black animal' in
this particular situation. So the single word
'elephant' is equivalent to the group 'mighty
big black animal'. If there are other mighty big
black animals other than elephants here, then
we can add a few words into this group and
make them equivalent again. For example, to
differentiate the elephants from the rhinos,
we may add 'with big ears' to the group.
This is exactly what a dictionary does. It gives
you groups of words equivalent to every other
word in it. Each word is then again supported
by a group of other words and this chain goes
on and on. If it is not being supported by any
other word but it supports some of them, then
those words it supports can be in turn used to
support it . There is no particular direction to
this support. This rules out the possibility of a
word getting support from some other words
but does not supporting even a single word
meaning that for a word to stand alone; it
should not be supported by as well as should
not support any other word. For example, as
'black' supports 'elephant', 'elephant' can
support 'black' too. This gives us the image of
the language being an interconnected
network, with each word being a node and
support being the connection between two
nodes.
But is it true that beyond the particular group
which supports a word, it has no identity? That
a word cannot stand in isolation in vacuum?
Imagine a word which needs no support but
can support others. Can such a word exist? I
don't think so. Suppose we make up such a
word, say, 'xeird'. Someone will ask you: "What
is xeird?" You will answer: "It is the word which
stands alone." At that very moment the word
xeird loses its aura as you have supported
xeird with the group of words: 'it, is, the,
word, which, stands and alone. 'You can keep
xeird alive at least for a longer time this way:
keep yourself silent to every query related to
xeird. But when you keep on being silent to
the continued queries from people, they will
themselves kill the stand-aloneness of xeird
this way: "Xeird is the word to which weird
people keep mum.
So what about creating your own xeird and
keeping it just within you? Never utter it to
anybody? You create a word and you make
yourself believe that it has no other
association with any other word, living or
dead. I'm not sure of this idea being great too.
The new word may hardly qualify for a word. A
word is a part of the language, I believe, and
language happens between at least two
individuals. This tells that a word cannot
exist in a single individual.
Now you go to your friend and conspire to
mint out a standalone word. That only
prolongs the life of the special word a little
longer, till one of you dies. After that, even if
the other one is still alive, by the need of
another individual to communicate it, the
word also dies. So it cannot be preserved
forever. You will need the support of other
words to preserve it. What about creating a
larger group of people? The singular word will
be transferred from one generation to the
next so that it lives as long as the group exists.
But again the word will need the support of
other words to be conveyed to the individuals
who were not present at the time the word
was first created. So this also is not practical.
This point should have come at the first place:
what is the purpose of creating such a word?
Even if all the above barriers can be
overcome, who will spend time and resources
for such a ridiculous thing? Is it that really
ridiculous? I don't know.

 The Existence of God
Introduction:
"The first question which should rightly be
asked is why there is something rather than
nothing?"
Leibniz answered this question by arguing
that something exists rather than nothing
because a necessary being exists which
carries within itself his reason for
existence and it is the sufficient reason for
the existence of all contingent beings. A
more modest explanation for necessity of
existence in terms of what he calls "factual
necessity" has been given by John Hick: a
necessary being is an eternal, uncaused,
indestructible, and incorruptible being.
Leibniz, of course, identified the necessary
being as God.
His critics, however, disputed this
identification, contending that the
material universe could itself be assigned
the status of a necessary being.
"Why," queried David Hume "may not the
material universe be the necessary
existent being, according to this pretended
explanation of necessity?" Typically, this
has been precisely the position of an
atheist. Atheists have not felt compelled to
embrace the view that the universe came
into being out of nothing for any reason at
all; rather they regard the universe itself
as a sort of factually necessary being: the
universe is eternal, uncaused,
indestructible, and incorruptible. As
Russell neatly put it, . . . The universe is
just there, and that's all."
Does Leibniz's argument therefore leave us
in a rational impasse?
Might there not be some further resources
available for untangling the riddle of the
existence of the world? It seems to me that
there are.
It will be remembered that an essential
property of a necessary being is eternality,
if then it could be made plausible (seeming
likely to be true, or able to be believed)
that the universe began to exist and is not
therefore eternal, one would to that extent
at least have shown the superiority of
theism as a rational world view.
1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause of
its existence. (Let us assume premise 1 is
true)

2.1 Argument based on the impossibility of
an actual infinite.

closely.
First Supporting Argument:
In order to understand (2.1), we need to
understand the difference between a
potential infinite and an actual infinite.
Now (2.11) maintains, not that a
potentially infinite number of things
cannot exist, but that an actually infinite

number of things cannot exist.
How to prove that an actually infinite
number of things cannot exist?
For that Let us imagine two hotels (X, Y)
a) One with a finite number of rooms
(X)and
b) Other with infinite number of
rooms(Y).
Case 1: Suppose that all the rooms in X
are full. When a new guest arrives
asking for a room, the proprietor
apologizes, "Sorry, all the rooms are
full.
Case 2: Suppose that all the infinite rooms
in hotel Y are full. There is not a single
vacant room throughout the entire infinite
hotel.
Now suppose new guest/guests shows up,
asking for a room. "But of course!" says the
proprietor, But how will he allot the room
to the guest?
Case a: He immediately shifts the person in
room #1 into room #2, the person in room #2
into room #3, the person in room #3 into
room #4 and so on, out to infinity. As a
result of these room changes, room #1 now
becomes vacant and the new guest
gratefully checks in.
Case b: If suppose infinity of new guests
show up the desk, asking for a room. "Of
course, of course!" says the proprietor, and
he proceeds to shift the person in room #1
into room #2, the person in room #2 into
room #4, the person in room #3 into room
#6, and so on out to infinity, always putting
each former occupant into the room
number twice his own. As a result, all the
odd numbered rooms become vacant, and
the infinity of new guests is easily
accommodated. And yet, before they
came, all the rooms were full! And again,
strangely enough, the number of guests in
the hotel is the same after the infinity of
new guests check in as before, even though

there were as many new guests as old
guests. In fact, the proprietor could repeat
this process infinitely many times and yet
there would never be one single person
more in the hotel than before.(same
applies during checking-out)
But how can this be possible?
Can anyone sincerely believe that such a
hotel could exist in reality? These sorts of
absurdities illustrate the impossibility of
the existence of an actually infinite
number of things.
That takes us to (2.12). The truth of

these premises seems fairly obvious.
If the universe never began to exist,
then prior to the present event there
have existed an actually infinite
number of previous events. Hence, a
beginning less series of events in
time entails the existence of an
actually infinite number of things,
namely, past events.
Given the truth of (2.11) and (2.12),

the conclusion (2.13) logically
follows. The series of past events
must be finite and have a beginning.
But since the universe is not distinct
from the series of events, it follows
that the universe began to exist.

On a Sunday morning, after struggling hard for
a Dosa, I could finally get the breakfast.
While reading the newspaper I found an article
related to habit of complaining. And all of a
sudden I started thinking of the discussion I
had with the people while standing in the
queue.
-it's a torture,
-mess ka khana is like hell,
-itni lambi line,
-lift kabhi kam karti hai kya ?
-Kitna padate hain yahan,
-Itni classes to humne kabhi nhi ki,
-is teacher ko kuch nhi aata,
-Anushatinagar is a village,
-this palce doesn't suit me,
-log kaise hain yahan,
-I hate mentality of people here,
-Sports room me humesha workshops hoti
rahti hain,
-internet to kabhi chalta hi nhi,
-books to kabhi milti nhi in library
-log kitne lazy hain yahan,
-no one is interested in working,
-no scope for research here
-ye monkeys na kitna pareshan karte hain
We all tend to complain about things around us
at some or other point of time, but few people
have the habit of cribbing about things all the
time. I would rather say complaining is a way
of life with them. They cannot stop criticizing
no matter where they are, who they are with
and what they are doing.
Was I thinking in the same way at that time?????
Yes, I was, and that prompted me to delve
further into the issue.
The people who do not wish to take
responsibilities have this habit of
complaining. It's their way of finding excuses
or justifications for failures. Rather than
securing us to justify our failure if we give the
whole of our energy in accomplishing the goal,
it will work. Instead of looking at the things
which are not appropriate why not look at the
things which are. Why not feel blessed for the
things you have? Gratitude makes you focus on
all the correct and the positive things granted
by God, and you come up with spiritual
dynamo.
Next moment we come up with the fact that
negativity is induced by our surrounding
people, conditions and circumstances; but,
Neither changing the circumstances nor the
people can affect your balance so long as your
essential self as a human being remains the
same, isn't it?
Another argument we may have why not to
fight to get things on track, why to adjust;
Being positive about things doesn't imply to
adjust ourselves or adapt to the system when
things are wrong. With a positive attitude we
should keep on fighting for these but at the
same time being continuous on our track is also
necessary. The implication is that anarchy
should not become an excuse for reluctance.
Argument arises what's wrong in pointing
out wrong things;
What we say continuously for a while they are
just a saying but with time they become our
belief and start influencing our conduct. When
we criticize, we start believing that things are
not right here & we find out justification for
our failure & ultimately the inertia that
prevents the course of action. When we focus
on the flaws they get multiplied & when we
feel great for the things we have, we feel
blessed.

 Au Revoir!
As I write this, my mind fills with an
year-old nostalgia. Even the weather was
identical that day, with the constant outpour of
rain, only to be paused intermittently by drafts
of monsoon breeze. As BARC welcomed me,
along with the fresh batch of Trainee Scientific
Officers, I felt equally privileged to have
successfully qualified for this 2-year M.Tech
course. As I looked around that day, trying to get
used to the surroundings, the hill in the vicinity
caught my attention. I have, on several
occasions, thought about trekking up that hill.
However, better sense has always prevailed.
Well, almost always
A year has rolled by since then, and the
proverbial 'mixed bag of emotions' is ready to
be opened. There are several treasured
moments, and in those moments lies the
essence of life itself. My classmates feature the
most in this flashback movie, as can be naturally
expected, and suffice it to say that my
interaction with them has been among the best
i have had in my career, and indeed, one which is
set to last a lifetime.
Be it the 'Mariam Notes' (the unofficial 'kunji' of
success in RSE discipline), or 'Ankush practicals'
(the sure-shot way to completing practical
reports) ours was a hilarious yet memorable
journey together. I distinctly remember the
bright young faces the first day I entered class,
when I shook hands with everyone. Today we
stand at the juncture where time and space will
yet again play their games, and we will depart
for our individual journeys. Like individual
nuclides merging together, only to separate
after a brief yet powerful exchange of energy,
which change the path of the particle - and more
importantly its surroundings - forever.
However, this article is not only about my
classmates. I write to you, not only as a
classmate, but also as a TDO. Today, as on the
first day, I see bright, young, restless yet hopeful
minds in you. You the erstwhile TSOs, are now
at the beginning of a new path I know what
ideas resonate deep within your mind-space, as
I have experienced that myself in my
interaction with you. It has been a learning
experience for me too. I know you want to think

BIG. You want to think out of the box. I implore
you, the collective YOU, to do so. Regardless of
the opportunities presented to you, or the lack
of it you have the power to change the course
of the country's future. This I say, with extreme
pride and hope. For I have seen, in each of you,
small sparks of ingenuity. As you and I step out
of the hallowed portals of this institute, we
have immense responsibilities on our
shoulders. This I say, with some years of
experience in my field of work.
Where I work, I get paid to be patriotic.
However, with the work which you shall be
assigned in the near future, I have reasons to
believe that you and I are no different. In fact,
we ought to complement each other. So while I
run the machine, you run the math behind it.
It's really that simple. Few years down the line,
there will be several occasions, when, given the
nature of our respective jobs, our paths are
likely to intersect. Then, as now, we may sit over
a cup of chai (or a can of beer :D) in the evening
and recall our days at BARC. The chicken
prepared by Pandey ji or the fish prepared by
Utpal da will dominate our discussions. As will
the way our lecture time was effectively
utilized by brainstorming games like 'dumb
charades' (and why Piyali would point towards
Utpal while guessing the 'da'!)
It is then, that we will realize what BARC life
meant. More importantly, it is then that we will
also realize the importance of what we learnt
here. For its only in the application of the
theory that real knowledge is of any practical
use. In this seemingly clich statement lies the
key to our collective future. Amidst the cryptic
talk of becoming a global super-power which
we usually hear from our TV sets, there is also
another India which we simultaneously live in.
The India where basic necessities are
conspicuous by their absence. The India where
human indices of development are amongst the
world's lowest. Hunger, illiteracy, poverty and
power outages are as much a part of India as
are GSLVs, Chandraayans, 'Agni-V's or even
Kudankulams. I do not want to wish away one
for the other. In fact, I feel the responsibility of
bridging the gap between two parallel Indians
that we live in, lie upon us.

The most important asset that any country can
have is its youth. Yes, my friends - You and I are a
part of our country's best natural resources. If
anyone can change our future, we can. The
energy is infinite, and we have been blessed to
have been introduced into its potential, here at
BARC. It's just a question of harnessing the same.
So, I urge you to think, innovate and invent our
predecessors did all of that, having much lesser
access to facility or resources than what we do in
this day and age. We have no excuse for not to
excel.
Brush away the misunderstandings. Learn to
cultivate a short memory. Enjoy what life throws
at you. Give the coming moment your best. It's
your chance to start anew. Be brave, take risks.
Twenty years on, you will be happy that you did
take a step ahead, when the world was thinking
about taking a step back.
I will definitely miss you. My journey in BARC
continues for an year more, yet without most of
you people around, the TSH will become a distant
memory. The countless games of football in the
evening, the trek to Lonavala, and the movie trips
to Vashi and beyond, the evening get-togethers at
Nilgiri will remain etched in my memory forever.
I wish each one of you, the very best of the voyage
ahead. One mention of any of your names will
light up my eyes, and if you happen to pass by the
place of my posting in 2015 or after that, be rest
assured I will be glad to host you as my guest.
