Semester Plan
47 classes (66 minutes) over 16 weeks
(43 classes, 5 buffer classes)

Course Information:
This course runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of every week. This course will meet
the requirements of the High School Music program of studies. Since this is a performance based
class, most of the students time will be playing pieces to grow their musical abilities and prepare
for concerts. Although, focus on theory, history and listening will be included to further the
students learning and musicianship skills. Assessment, evaluations and diagnosis will fall in
conjunction to material being learnt and emphasized in that period of time.

Course Objective:
The objectives of Band 9 are for students to further their growth as musicians and begin to
appreciate and understand the benefits of music and being a musician. The students will learn to
becomes well balanced, rounded musicians as they will apply theoretical and practical knowledge
to their work.

Week 1
Theme: Relationship Building

Concepts: The first week of classes will be used to introduce the new students to one another and
begin to break down any barriers that they might have so we are able to move forward as solo
musicians and an ensemble(s). We will discuss expectations and rules as a whole group to further
the students understandings of what is to come and what is expected. This will help the students
feel more comfortable in the classroom and out.

Week 2
Theme: Lets Begin!

Concepts: This week is the opportunity for students to begin playing. We will begin with bringing
back known-pieces, or music in past method books that they are familiar with to get them started
and comfortable with playing after an extended period of time away from their instruments. This
week is a large assessment week as I will be able to see where the students are musically and
technically in their playing abilities.

Week 3
Theme: Sight-Reading

Concepts: After last weeks assessment of students abilities, two pieces will be handed out to
students and we will begin to work on repertoire. This week will focus on the students ability to
sight-read and apply their past musical skill. This will aid in the assessment process as I begin to
understand each students skills to a greater degree.

Week 4
Theme: Warm-Up / Scales

Concepts: During this week, we will be focusing on the warm-up and scales. The warm-ups will
consist of chorales in our method book and scales attributed to level IV in the instrumental
curriculum. This is to ensure the students for success for their first assessment.

Week 5
Theme: Assessment!

Concepts: Assessment will be at the focus of this week as the students will have their first
assessment of the year; scales and portion of our method book. This will allow myself and the
students to see where they are sitting in grade 9 band.

Week 6
Theme: Listening/Appreciation/History

Concepts: These next couple weeks will be touching on the focus of this semester/unit. That is
the appreciation and understanding of music and its impact on ourselves and the world! We will
be focusing on some history (present within the curriculum), and comparing to our musical
selections/repertoire this semester.

Week 9
Theme: Assessment!

Concepts: This will be the students second round of large assessment. It will be a self-video
recording of students performing specific parts of their repertoire as well as more scales. The
students will be given a self-assessment rubric and their grade will contribute. This allows the
students to understand their struggles to a greater degree and evaluate their progress.

Week 10
Theme: Rhythm and Theory

Concepts: This week we will explore more theory, and work on our rhythmic accuracy to a greater
degree. This will extend into our theory quiz which will happen within the following weeks. Each

class we will start with a theory activity or exercise. This will be in groups or solo and will hit
rhythmic and theory outcomes within Level IV.

Week 13
Theme: Breathing and Assessment!

Concepts: This week our focus will be breathing. We will include several breathing warm-ups into
our regular routine. We will possibly do some Breathing Gym videos. Students will understand
the importance of a good tank of air when playing! The inclusion of our theory quiz will be in this
week as well. The quiz will contain material worked on in weeks 10 and 11.

through establishing, extending and reinforcing correct technical skills.

Week 14
Theme: Concert Prep.

Concepts: In the final week leading up to our Christmas concert, we will be focusing on concepts
of performance and professionalism. We will ensure that our repertoire is prepared and
performance ready! We will go over several aspects of performance (anxiety and breathing), also
the final details of our rep.

Week 15
Theme: Decompress Explore

Concepts: As these are the final weeks of school, students will be given the opportunity to explore
musical ideas that interest them, as well as introduction to pieces that they will continue into the
new year (Kade Hoggs musical selections). We will be handing back music and organizing
folders.

Theme: Decompress Explore2

Concepts: As these are the final week of school, students will be given the opportunity to explore

year (Kade Hoggs musical selections). We will be handing back music and organizing folders.
