Know each of these Characters:


Cherry- Soc, Bobs girlfriend, spy for the Socs.

Sodapop- Brother to Darry and Ponyboy, almost always happy.

Johnny- Dark almost black eyes, known as pet to the greasers.

Bob- Boyfriend to Cherry, Killed by Johnny, Soc.

Darry- Brother to Ponyboy and Soda, went to work instead of college.

Steve- Really good with cars, Sodas buddy.

Ponyboy- Brother to Darry and Soda, person telling the story.

Two-Bit- Greaser and wisecracker of the group.

Dally- Greaser who helps Ponyboy and Johnny, has really blonde hair.

Randy- Soc, Bobs friend, talks to Ponyboy about his feelings.

Cause and Effect


Pony boy left home because he thought his brother hated him.
Dally was bitter and hard from the fight for self-preservation.
Soda became moody and depressed because his girl had left.
Bob was unhappy and wild because his parents were too indulgent.
Darry was becoming old before his time because he had too much responsibility.
Johnny had a hunted, lost lookafter the Socs beat him up.

Things to know about


~Two-Bits prize possession is his switchblade with the black handle.
~Pony felt a good reason for fighting was self-defense.
~The statement that helps set up the novels opening conflict was Ponyboy walking home,
thinking about the movie, and suddenly wishing I had some company.
~ Darry slaps Ponyboy in CH. 3, this incident push the action of the novel because Ponyboy
heads for the park with Johnny, where they encounter the Socs.
