What is Character Traits?

Generally, character traits reflect peoples characteristic patters of thoughts, feelings,

and behaviors. Desirable character traits include those of responsibility, loyalty, honesty,

trustworthiness, dependability, reliability, initiative, and self-

discipline.

When we observe people around us, one of the first things

that strike us is how different people are from one another.

Some people are very talkative while others are very quiet. Some are active whereas

other couch potatoes. Some worry a lot, others almost never seem anxious.

Each time we use one of these words, words like talkative, quiet , active, or

anxious , to describe those around us, we are talking about a persons personality- the

characteristic ways that people differ from one another. Personality psychologist tries to

describe and understand these differences.

Module: Character Traits

Understanding the concept of character traits could help you to understand people that

surround you. When reading a certain text, specifically a story, you could not

understand the characters without knowing their patterns of thoughts, emotions and

actions reflected in the story. Inferring characters traits could help you to understand the

story better and decipher the essence of it. Thus, in Literature, characterizing a

character in a certain text could help to develop further understanding about the

characters in the story.

What a character says, does, thinks and feels show the kind

of person he/she is. What other characters say also give you

clues to his/her character trait.

Characters (and real life people) have unique attributes called traits. You can use the

following list of character traits as a guideline as you go further in this module. Dont

stop with this list, though; you can probably think of many more terms to describe your

characters.

Honest Brave Bright Selfish Humble Quite

Light- Courageous Serious Confident Ambitious Curious

hearted Creative Funny Respectful Erudite Adorable

Leader independen humorous considerate hardworking Friendly
