TORQUE CONVERTER
as indicated by its name, as a central unit
to transfer torque (the engine the
transmission) and increase the torque via
the flow of the automatic transmission
fluid. Because it is directly connected to
the engine side drive plate, the torque
converter performs the role of the
flywheel (increase of inertia) also.
Accordingly, the drive plate is lighter and
thinner than the flywheel of the engine for
the manual transmission.

It consists of a converter cover, pump impeller,
turbine runner and stator (incl. one-way clutch).

OIL PUMP
OIL PUMP
Two types of oil pumps are used; the variable-
displacement pump and a gear type pump.
The oil pump is an essential part of the automatic
transmission as it provides the oil pressure
required for applying clamping force for the
various clutches and the band brake.
The oil pump also supplies lubrication oil flow and
oil flow for cooling by pumping it through the
transmission cooler.
The oil pump is driven by a sleeve welded to the
front of the torque converter body and oil
pressure is produced whenever the engine is
running.
OIL PUMP
The oil pressure is controlled by a pressure
regulator, filtered and then directed to the valve
body and transmission case circuits.
Symptoms & causes of a malfunctioning oil pump:
Symptoms of a malfunction might include; early
shifting, slipping during shifts, no forward
movement, and noise while the engine is running,
(in any gear) that increases with engine speed.
The oil pump is the only source of line pressure in
the transmission. Therefore, any symptom
generated by a low line pressure could be caused
by a malfunctioning pump.
