Distance Education Instructional Design Plan

Name of your lesson: Classifying Rocks

Unit: Rocks and Minerals

Grade level or target audience: 6th grade Special Education (Small group)

Age: 11-13 years

Standard: S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earths surface is formed.

C. Classify rocks by their process of formation.

Purpose of the instruction: The purpose of this course is to teach my 6th graders the classification of the different types of rocks.
In the coming weeks, my students will be going on a school field trip to learn about the different types of rocks. I thought it would be a
good idea to create an online course base on this topic as a strategy to prepare them for their trip. Most 6th grade students are unable to
differentiate between the different types of rocks and how they are classified. I would like to take them on an adventure to discover how
the different rocks are formed.

Learning Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to classify the three main types of rocks based on their formation.
By the end of this unit, students will be able to define and describe how the three major types of rocks are formed.

Essential questions
What is a rock?
What are sedimentary rocks?
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
How are rocks weathered?
How are rocks eroded?
How are rocks deposited?
What are metamorphic rocks?
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
What are igneous rocks?
How are igneous rocks formed?
What is a rock cycle?

Instructional design model: ASSURE

For this course, I will use the ASSURE Instructional Design Model. I am a special education teacher so I teach students with

learning disabilities. I am required to provide support and modify instructions to suit the learning styles and student accommodations. The

ASSURE model will provide the steps needed to meet the needs of my students. I will start by analyzing the general characteristics of my

students, by getting to know their level of competencies in the subject and determine which activities and learning styles will help my

students understand the lesson. I will make sure that I state specific and measurable learning objectives to ensure that my students
understand what they are expected to know by the end of the lesson. I will select media materials that will help my students learn better.

The materials selected will be used effectively to enhance instruction. The resources selected will match the learning preferences of my

students. I will provide activities that encourage students to be engaged and be active participants in the learning process. As part of the

learning process, students will work individually and in groups, they will have presentations and also engage in educational games. The use

of participation and collaboration will make the lesson more meaningful and interactive. During the duration of this course, students will be

evaluated using different assessment methods. Formative assessment will be given and constructive feedback will be provided. The aim of

the different formative assessment is to gauge student understanding of the lesson and to drive instruction. At the end of the unit, students

will complete a summative assessment after reviewing the entire lesson. At the end of the lesson, I will ensure that I reflect on the course to

determine what went well during the course, what did not go well and what I would change to make it better.

Lesson Activities:

Students will be introduced to the lesson(classification of rocks)

Students will learn key content vocabulary based on the classification of rocks.
Students will take a syllabus and a vocabulary quiz.
Students will be introduced to the different types of rocks and they will watch videos about rock classification by login into
BrainPOP.
Students will complete a vein diagram comparing the different types of rocks.
Students will read and take notes on the types of igneous rocks, texture, color, composition of rocks.
Students will learn about the texture, color, composition of the different types of rocks and will engage in on online discussion
stating the differences that they discovered.
Students will learn about the rock cycle diagram by taking notes.
Students will create a slideshow presentation of the different types of rock and describe how they are formed by using sway. Each
slide must have the rocks name, facts, and a picture.
Students will use notes to take a quiz to gauge knowledge of the lesson.
Students will engage in the online discussion by stating 3 things that they learned about rocks, 2 things that amazed them about the
lesson and 1 question or a suggestion they have.
In this activity, students will get into three groups by randomly choosing a Popsicle stick with one of the three rock classifications
on it (sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic). Members of each group will use a previously created concept map website by
clicking on this link below, to identify different types of rocks in their classification. Using the list of choices, become an expert on
one of those rocks that you will share with the rest of the members of your group
