GENERAL GUIDE LINES FOR PIPING SPECIFICATION &
LAYOUT OF AIR COMPRESSOR UNIT PACKAGE Page No. 1
(CONVENTIONAL UTILITY PACKAGE)
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Scope:
This specification covers in general; the equipment clearances, elevations, spacing and access
for maintenance for the Air Compressor Unit. In designing the Air Compressor layout, adequate
access must be provided for plant items requiring routine maintenance with a due consideration
of simplicity and quickness in maintenance operation including repairs, replacement and routine
work such as lubrication, gland packing etc. All routine maintenance must be possible while the
plant is on stream at full load/part load.
2.0 Clearance:
As a standard engineering practice, the following are the minimum typical requirements to be
included but not limited to :
2.1 The headroom above all the equipment shall be adequate for easy removal/replacement for
maintenance of compressors, motors etc.
2.2 Foundation height for all equipment shall be min. 200mm above finished floor level .
2.3 Large machines such as multistage compressors shall be provided with monorails and trolleys to
take a lifting tackle capable of lifting the heaviest removable part of equipments or driver.
2.4 Ensuring that there is adequate room to withdraw & replace heat exchanger tube bundles or for
erection of the drums etc. For fixed tube plate heat exchangers, there shall be sufficient room for
washing tubes with water using lances 1 meter longer than the tubes.
2.6 In general the minimum headroom beneath overhead piping or supports over walkways,
passageways and working areas shall be 2.2 meters.
3.0 Piping:
3.1 Mechanical design of piping and selection of piping materials shall be according to the latest
edition of ANSI/ASME B31.3 and ASTM/API/IS/BS codes.
3.2 Dimensions of all normal elements such as pipes, fittings, flanges, valves etc. shall be according
to ANSI, API, BS or IS latest issue. Should an element not be covered by the mentioned code,
manufacturer's standard has to be applied.
3.3 Piping shall be arranged so that it drains to equipment wherever possible. Pockets and dead
ends are to be avoided.
3.6 Use of 1 1/4", 2 1/2", 3 1/2", 5", 7" & 9" NB etc. pipes should be avoided as far as possible.
3.7 A minimum clearance of 150mm shall be provided from all the flanges from the finished floor
level.
3.8 A minimum clearance of 200mm shall be provided from the bottom of pipe to the finished floor
level.
