A wheel of radius 100 mm is sought to be rolled over a

step of height 50 mm as shown in the figure. For this

purpose the wheel is being pulled by two ropes, one
attached at the top of the wheel at A and the other at the
center of the wheel at O. The rope attached at the
topmost point A is pulled by a force F1 = 100 N while the
rope attached at the center O is being pulled in an upward
direction at an angle of 36.87 degrees with the horizontal
with a force F2 = 150 N. Also to aid the process a
counterclockwise torque M1 = 12 Nm is being applied on
the wheel. If we wish to replace this entire arrangement
by an equivalent force system consisting of a single rope
attached at any point on the line AB and pulled, where
would that point B lie? What angle would the rope make with the horizontal in that case and what would
be force applied to the rope?

In the given system of interlinked rigid bodies,
all the bodies, including the pulley are
massless. ABCDE is a single body with pin
joints at A, C, D. FCG is a single body with a
pin joint at C and a roller joint at G. Find the
tension in the rope and the reactions at the
supports at A and G and the joints at C and D.

For 3 correct FBDs: 3 marks.

For correct value of tension or any reaction
component found out first: 3.5 marks

For correct values of remaining unknowns

0.5 marks each.

In the given truss find the forces in the
members AB, BC, CD, CE, AE and DE. There is
a pin jointed support at A and a roller
support at D. ABCD forms a square.

For the three FBDs: 1 mark each. If method

of sections is used 1 joint diagram and two
sections will be required.

Full marks to be given only if signs are

correct.

For correct AB and BC 1 mark each

For correct CE and CD 2 marks each
For correct EA and ED 2 marks each.
