Objectives for Simulation:


1. Demonstrate principles of caring.
2. Positively identify patient.
3. Explain the rights of medication administration and the proper pre-medication assessments for oral, SQ, and inhaled medications.
4. Perform the 3 checks related to medication administration.
5. Demonstrate the steps of administering oral medication.
6. Choose acceptable sites for SQ and IM injection administration and demonstrate proper technique for administering medication
7. Recognize how to prepare inhaled medications use medication package insert and other resource

Medication Simulation Laboratory Notes:


CC Training done by CSC faculty

o Reviewed liability issue only administer meds YOU have prepared

o Debriefing Instructor must observe the Simulation

Drug Cards Lisinopril, Insulin (Novolog), Advair, Heparin, Toradol

SQ and IM practice station requires Instructor to monitor and check off


o Check offs on IM site ID, IM administration, and SQ administration
o Reviewed labeling syringes & needle/syringe identification

Med Math practice test. Students will have one hour to complete test and may check their answers on the answer key. Remediation will be
done in post clinical in weeks 12-14 as needed. Students who self-identify as math challenged should be encouraged to work with a tutor.

Closing and recap details:


o Use 50 unit syringe when dose <50 units
o Do not open pills/remove from packages until at bedside
o Simulation requires reflection today/in a few days due next clinical practice day to clinical instructor
