I listed four principles in my ALF, they are, practical, empathy, connected, and
respectful. There are lots of attributes which are also important for me to become an effective
facilitator that I didnt put them on the poster because of lacking space.
Practical
Based on Wlodkowskis (2008) opinion, adult learners tend to learn new knowledge or
things for specific reasons in terms of what they think they need or want. Although those things
might not be what they really need, it is a good approach for the instructor to guide and facilitate
them to the right path.
Empathy
I think empathy is an essential character of any sentimental human beings in the world.
Everyone needs someone elses understanding. It could come from parents, partners, friends and
the like. Empathy is an ability to understand other peoples feelings or problems. I regard
empathy as one of the important qualities of a facilitator.
Connected
To be more specific, connected means create communicative learning communities both
inside and outside the classroom, build a good relationship with students, and open with
questions all the time.
Respectful
Respect is the cornerstone of any type of class, and it must be mutual respect. The
facilitation from the instructor is one of the big components of a positive class while the curiosity
from the students is the counterpart. They both build on respect.
With all these four principles, I believe Ill become an effective facilitator in the future.
