High School Equivalency vs. High School Diploma
High School Equivalency (HSE) - GED or HiSET
The HSE is not the same as a High School diploma. Passing the test demonstrates that you
have equivalent knowledge as someone with a High School Diploma.
HSE certificates are accepted at most jobs and colleges, BUT some require a High
School Diploma OR do not accept HSE.
FREE HSE prep classes are available

Torrance Adult School offers both the GED and HiSET.


Both are accredited, and certificates are issued by the state of CA.
How to Register, Pay, and Test for HSE:
GED - Pay and register online at GED.com. Online test at LEVY.
Fee: $35/subject area. 4 areas.
HiSET - Register & pay at HAMILTON. Paper test only at LEVY.
MUST FIRST create an account at hiset.ets.org
Fee: $199 for the entire test, OR $45/subject area. 5 subject areas.
NO REFUNDS once registered.

High School Diploma (HSD)


To earn a High School Diploma, you must pass ALL required classes and earn ALL credits.
You can earn your HSD at any age and after the HSE.

Applying through FAFSA to receive grants and federal financial aid is
not your only option. Look for scholarship opportunities or specific aid
that might apply.
