LIBRARY CLERK (PERMANENT PART-TIME)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs library-related tasks under the supervision of the
assistant director and/or department supervisor.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for work involving
performance of a number of varied library tasks. The work requires the exercise of judgment in the
application of prescribed procedures from the library policy manual. The work involves patron
information of a confidential nature. Accuracy and alertness to detail is paramount.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Perform general circulation tasks at front desk
Handle reference questions and readers advisory requests
Assist patrons with computer/Internet/word processing usage
Coordinate and process overdue material notices and phone calls
Cart and re-shelve books and other library materials
Clean CDs and DVDs
Process books for circulation
Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to alphabetize, use and
understand Dewey Decimal System. Must be able to work standing at front desk in 2-4 hour shifts.
Must be able to cart, carry, and re-shelve books and other media. Computer skills are mandatory.
Phone etiquette and customer service skills are essential including courtesy, tact, confidentiality,
and initiative.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma. Library experience and/or
State Library certification preferred.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Required Physical Activities: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable
accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively with others in person and
over the telephone. Other physical activities include walking, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling,
repetitive motions, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and manual dexterity.

Physical Characteristics of Work: Work requires sitting and/or using various computer equipment
40% of the time and standing and/or walking 60% of the time. Frequently requires the exertion of
up to 20 pounds of force, and infrequently requires the exertion of 10-50 pounds of force to lift or
otherwise move objects. Requires sitting at a computer for several hours or standing at a desk for 2-
4 hours at a time.

Vision Requirements: Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits
the employee to prepare, review and file a variety of written documents in both electronic and hard
copy forms. The minimum standard needed for those whose work deals largely with preparing and
analyzing data and written information, accounting, transcription, computer terminal and/or
extensive reading.

Environmental Conditions: For most positions in this classification, the worker is not substantially
exposed to adverse environmental conditions. In some positions, the worker may be subject to
noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, or atmospheric
conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin.
