WORKING WITH TEXTILE

Do you know what a textile is? Chances are pretty good you either used one today, sat on
one, or at the minimum saw one. Find out what a textile is, examples of what one can be
made of, and how.

What Is A Textile?
When you got up this morning, you likely threw off the bed covers. Then, you went into the
bathroom where you stepped on a rug. After leaving the bathroom you probably put on some
clothing. Then, you sat down at a table that may have had a tablecloth on it. From there, you
went to your car and sat down on a car seat. You came in to work and sat on a padded chair.

Those covers, rugs, clothes, tablecloths, car seat upholstery, and chair upholstery, were all
example of textiles. A textile is a material made of natural or synthetic fibers.

Fibers Used In Textiles

The fibers that can be used to make a textile are vast nowadays. Let's go over some example of
them. Some of these fibers are plant based. They include:

Flax
Hemp
Sisal
Jute
Nettle
Cotton

People also use animal fibres that to make textiles. These are mainly limited to:

Wool
Silk

This painting shows Chinese women of the 12th century

inspecting a silk-based textile.

And with the advent of modern technology, there are many

synthetic fibers that have been used to make textiles, including:

Nylon
Rayon
Kevlar
Polyester
Spandex
Acrylic

How textiles are made

They can be made by spinning, a process that involves winding fibers together to make a string
or yarn.

You can also create textiles through weaving, or interlacing fibers with one another to make a
mesh.

Furthermore, textiles can be manufactured through felting. Felting is the process of using any
combination of pressure, heat, moisture, and movement to create a mat or sheet of fibers

What is a Textile Designer?

We don't always think about it, but there is art all around us. Look around your home. Do you
have towels? How'd they get there? There are no towel trees growing in the rainforest.
Somebody had to design that towel--select those colors, create the patterns, choose the
materials, etc. The same can be said of your carpets, the fabrics on your furniture, even your
curtains. Have you ever noticed how many styles of curtains there are? These different styles were
all designed by somebody. That somebody is a textile designer, a person responsible for the
aesthetic characteristics of fabrics or cloths. These artists have more impact on your daily life than
you probably ever realized. Just look around

Picking the Materials

So, what exactly does a textile designer do? Picture yourself working for a company that makes
special novelty socks. They want their socks to sell better than anybody else's so they hire a
textile designer (you) to make their socks the best. Not all textile designers get to choose the
materials they work with, but this sock company has the time and money to invest in the best
product possible, so they give their textile designers a lot of power. One of your first steps is to
pick the materials used to create these socks. Socks need to be soft, thick enough for cushioning,
lightweight enough for comfort, strong enough for prolonged use, and absorbent. So, you
choose to avoid a fragile material like linen or a course material like hemp. Cotton is a good
option, as are synthetic fabrics like polyester.

Textile designers that have control over this part of the process have a lot of decisions to make.
Besides just picking the fabrics, they may also need to consider what fiber types, yarn sizes, or

kinds of dyes will be used, as well as how those dyes will be applied. Are you going to print the
design by hand or with a machine? Should the fabrics be bleached or left natural? Are any parts
of the design going to be embroidered or sewn? There's a lot to think about.

Creating the Design

Aside from deciding on what type of materials to use, you'll need to actually create the design.
Your design needs to meet both the aesthetic and practical needs of the product. Since this is a
novelty company, they want their socks to be fun, bright, and colorful. Your design should reflect
those needs, but in a way that works for a sock. Are horizontal or vertical stripes better? How
large or small should patterns be to be visible? Which parts of the sock will generally be seen,
and which parts will be hidden?

Textile designs can get pretty complex

Next exercise is a mind mapping. You must do research about the textile.

Things need to do research:

1. Types of textile.
2. Techniques ( how there are made/ cara kain dibuat? ). Give definition (meaning)
i. Decorative
ii. Patchwork
iii. Applique
iv. Quilting
3. Batik
i. Define about batik
ii. History
iii. Tools and process
4. Lists of artist name in textile in ART

Before you can use equipment and tools or attempt practical work in a lab/ workshop
you must understand basic safety rules. These rules will keep you and others safe in
the workshop/lab.

Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow instructions

Do not run in the workshop/lab, you could bump into another student and cause
an accident.
Know where the first aid and fire extinguisher placed.
Always wear an apron as it will protect your clothes and hold loose clothing
such as ties in place.
Wear proper attire when entering the workshop/Lab.
Wear shoes when entering the workshop/Lab.
When attempting practical work all stools should be put away.
Bag should not be brought into a workshop as people can trip over them.
When learning how to use the tools, listen very carefully to all the instructions.
given by the teacher. Ask questions, especially if you dont fully understand.
Do not use tools if you have not been shown how to use it safely by the teacher
Always be patient, never rush in the workshop/Lab.
Use hand tools carefully, keep both hands behind cutting edge.
Report any damage to equipment as this could cause an accident

I agree to the terms set above and follow all instructions. If there accident
happen I ___________________will responsible on it and payback any loss.
