MECHANICS
Tutorial Sheet 3

1. Calculate the Reynolds number for blood flowing at 30 cm·s-1 through an aorta of radius 1.0 cm.
Assume that blood has a viscosity of 4 mPa·s and a density of 1060 kgm-3.

2. A horizontal tube with an inside diameter of 1.2 mm and a length of 25 cm has water flowing through it
at 0.30 mL·s-1. Assuming laminar flow,
a) find the pressure difference required to drive this flow if the viscosity of water is 1.00 mPa·s;
b) find the diameter of a tube that would give double the flow rate for the pressure difference
calculated above.

3. A water pipe having a 2.5 cm inside diameter carries water into the basement of a house at a speed of
0.90 ms-1 and a pressure of 170 kPa. If the pipe tapers to 1.2 cm and rises to the second floor 7.6 m
above the input point, what are the speed, volume flow rate and water pressure at the second floor?

4. Blood flows in an aorta of radius 9 mm at 30 cm·s-1.

a) Calculate the volume flow rate in litres per minute.
b) If all the blood from the aorta flows into the capillaries and the speed of flow through the capillaries
is 1.0 mm·s-1, calculate the total cross-sectional area of the capillaries.

5. The masses and coordinates of four spheres are as follows:

10 kg, x = 0 m, y = 0.50 m;
20 kg, x = 0.50 m, y = 1.0 m;
40 kg, x = –1.0 m, y = –1.0 m;
60 kg, x = 0 m, y = –0.50 m.
What is the magnitude of the gravitational force on the 10-kg sphere due to the other spheres?

6. A 20 kg satellite has a circular orbit with a period of 2.4 h and a radius of 8.0 × 106 m around a planet of
mass M. If the magnitude of the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the planet is 8.0 ms -2, what
is the radius of the planet?

7. Show that the total energy of a satellite in a circular orbit is half its potential energy.

8. A uniform beam of weight w is inclined at an angle of 60º to the horizontal. Its upper end is supported
by a horizontal rope tied to a wall and its lower end rests on a rough floor. A weight of 80 N is
suspended from the other end of the rope as shown. The coefficient of static friction between the beam
and floor is 0.40.

80 N
60°
a) Draw a free-body diagram for the beam.
b) Determine the weight of the beam, the tension in the rope attached to the wall and the magnitude of
the force exerted by the floor on the beam.
c) “Static equilibrium is still maintained even if there is no frictional force between the beam and the
floor.” Is this statement true or false? Justify your response.

9. You hold a 6-kg weight in your hand with your foreman making a 90° angle 
with your upper arm, as
shown in the diagram below. Your biceps muscle exerts an upward force Fm that acts 3.4 cm from the
pivot point O at the elbow joint. Model the forearm and hand as a 30-cm-long uniform rod with a mass
of 1 kg.

a) Find the magnitude of Fm if the distance from the weight to the pivot point (elbow joint) is 30 cm.
b) Find the magnitude and direction of the force exerted on the elbow joint by the upper arm.

10. The function x = 6.0 cos ( 3πt + π / 3) gives the simple harmonic motion of a body. (x is in metres and t
is in seconds.) At t = 2.0 s, what are the displacement, velocity, acceleration, phase of the motion,
frequency and period of the motion?

11. A tuned mass damper, which is essentially a large mass-spring system mounted high in a building to
counteract building oscillations, consists of a 373 000-kg concrete block that completes one oscillation
in 6.80 s. The oscillation amplitude in a high wind is 110 cm. Determine the spring constant and the
maximum speed and acceleration of the block.

12. A physical pendulum of mass M consists of a uniform metre stick that is pivoted at a small hole drilled
through the stick a distance x from the 50-cm mark. The period of oscillation is observed to be 2.5 s.
Find x.
