CHEN 200 INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Exam 2 Solutions
29th April 2011
Problem 1
The problem is a steady state one with a reaction occurring, and the system will be the combination of both
units. In this problem the oxidation reaction of pyrites can be considered to occur as follows.

(MW : S 32; Fe 56; O 16; N 14)

3 FeS2 + 8 O2 -----> Fe3O4 + 6 SO2

Step 5 Basis : P = 100 kg mol

Step 6 Let F be in kg, A and P in kg mol, Z be the kg mol of SO2 absorbed in the lime solution, and Y be the
moles of Fe3O4 in the cinder.
Steps 7 and 8
Element balances (in moles)

Problem 2
Take the basis as 1 hour. There is no indication as to what reaction(s) is(are) taking place.
Let m1, m2 and m3 be equal to the mass of IBB, AAn and IBA, respectively, present at the end of 1 hour.
Perform three elemental balances (H,C,O) (Note that the LHS of the equation represents initial values, while the
RHS represents final values):

C Balance: 10 12 4 12 10 12 4 12 12 12 2 12

H Balance: 14 1 6 1 14 1 6 1 16 11 4 1
O Balance: 3 16 3 16 1 16 2 16

Thus there are three equations in 3 unknowns. These can be solved simultaneously, or by substitution to yield:

m1 = 1.2 g, m2 = 176 g, m3 = 22.9 g

Problem 3
Basis: 100 mol Product Gas
Since the molecular composition of the fuel is unknown, we label its atomic species composition. We also
recognize that since the fuel is a hydrocarbon, water must be one of the combustion products.
The fuel composition may therefore be described by the formula (CH3.97 )N.
Since there is only one hydrocarbon for which the ratio of H to C is close to 3.97-that is, CH4 we may conclude in this case that
the fuel is essentially pure methane, perhaps with trace amounts of other hydrocarbons.

Problem 4
For parts (a) and (b), consider the overall process and perform two component balances (or an overall balance
and a component balance). This will result in two equations in 2 unknowns, from which the product and water
flow rates from each stage can be determined. P = 2500 kg/hr, while W = 2,500 kg/hr (from each stage).
For part (c) perform a balance over the first evaporator: this results in two equations with two unknowns (a
water balance and an overall balance). The concentration of water in the juice fed to the second evaporator is
equal to 0.8 (80%).
