Scenario start, showing initial lines (Red = German; Green = Allied).

Germans have a long way to go, so

need to stay focused on their goal. Also, note the highways heading West, those will be critical to get the
German panzer units into battle. The rivers are also important to be aware of, since they will also form
natural barriers for the panzer units. The next page will show, IMO, the preferred plan of attack.
The 7th army (light blue) should attempt to drive along the South edge of the map, securing as many of the
Allied entry areas as possible, to delay the ability of the US CCBs from reinforcing the center of the map. The
6th army (grey) should focus on the major E-W roads, while driving towards the Meuse and the victory hexes
in the center of the Western map. The 5th army (red) should bypass the heavy wooded areas directly in front
of their at-start position and, first, threaten Liege, then be willing/able to bypass Liege to grab victory cities
and/or attempt to cross the Meuse to exit the map West of Liege.
Now, lets see if the Germans can put it into practice!

After first Day (start of Turn 3). 2nd Panzer and 26th Infantry made strong progress up the middle, while the 1st SS,
led by Peiper, drove up between St Vith and Malmedy. Good progress is made in the middle and North sector,
but the South still hasnt managed to grab any entry hexes. The Allied 106th Infantry attempted to break out on
Turn 2 (remember, they cannot move on turn 1), but look to be pocketted. Using roadblocks and what units they can,
the Allies have attempted to prevent strategic movement into the rear by German advance formations.
After second Day (start of Turn 5). 7th Army secures its flank against the arrival of the 10th Armor Division. 2nd Panzer
and Lehr race through Bastogne against scattered resistance. The 116th, 1st SS and 12th SS drive on Stavelox and
Viesalm, taking Malmedy in the process. Last remaining elements of the 106th Infantry division under siege at their
starting location.

The 6th army has progressed very well along its axis of advance, securing the Bastogne road. Similarly, the
7th army has begun securing the South flank. The 5th army is attempting to secure the main E-W road to allow for a
push on Liege. Allies have resorted to break-downs of CCBs to attempt to keep units along all the major roads.
After third Day (start of Turn 7). 9th Armor CCB gets cut off by the FB near Basse-Bodeux as 116th, 1st SS and 12th SS
continue pushing towards Liege. St Hubert falls to lead elements of Panzer Lehr and the 2nd PZ Division, but both are
stretched to the point of breaking and are forced to start slowing their advance due to the arrival of the US Paratroopers.

Because of the river and forests, the 6th army gets pushed off of its desired axis of advance, and pushes SW instead
of NW from Bastogne. The Allies have taken to defending in forests/wooded rough instead of towns, giving up the +1
DCB, but negating the Axis armor shifts (and sometimes halving the armor too). Note how the 5th army has secured
the key E-W road in its sector, allowing a strong push towards Liege to begin.
After fourth Day (start of Turn 9). US losses have been heavy, with 16 units killed so far, including 2 CCBs and a full
regiment of the 30th Inf. 7th Army secures as much of areas A C as they will. 2nd Panzer and Lehr await reinforcement
by 3rd PG before pushing further against the Allied Paratroopers. The middle has solidified for the Allies, though the
Germans are across the key rivers. A counterattack by the 3rd and 7th Armor disrupts lead elements of the 1st SS at
Sprimont, blunting the drive on Liege slightly.

Allied counterattacks are huge, given the need for time on the German side. Also, the 6th army has started to re-address
its push to NW, though the Paratroopers are difficult to dislodge in the rough terrain in the middle of the map.
After fifth Day (start of Turn 11). The drive on Liege hits a snag as defense stiffens right before the critical river line.
The 116th, 18th INF and 9th SS drive past the Ourthe river, hoping to break out over the Muese. Panzer Lehr, 3rd PG
and 2nd Panzer start slowly advancing on Sedan and Givet.

The drive on Liege is tough, do to the rivers forming a natural barrier (and negating the German tank advantage). It
looks like just enough Allied units have arrived + sufficient time bought, that the river line will be well defended and
the Germans will have to attack across, instead of just infiltrating.
Middle of sixth Day (start of US portion of Turn 13). Lead elements of the 1st, 2nd and 12th SS reach within 3 hexes of
Liege. The 116th and 18th INF punch a hole in Allied lines near Maffe and threaten Huy. The center holds, even though
elements of the 3rd PG punch a hole in the Allied Paratroopers near Offagne. Meanwhile, the hammer of the 4th Armor,
5th, 26th, and 80th Infantry divisions prepare to hit the flank of the GE 7th army.

The Allies will patch the line and hit the 7th hard in their portion of the turn, as well as sealing the hole near Huy as best
as they can (though in the open terrain, they are susceptible to the German armor). Several victory cities are in German
hands, and it looks like Liege may not be necessary to win (though it will serve as a good distraction of Allied units).
Start of seventh Day (start of Turn 15). Liege is only 2 hexes away and the Allies have failed to blow the key major road
bridge next to Liege. Will the 1 hex GE attack succeed!??! Elsewhere the German advance slows to a crawl against
stiff resistance, but several victory cities have fallen. The 7th army front is breached in many areas, but the arrival of the
9th PG division appears to have everything well in hand.

Allied counterattacks divert key reinforcements, but otherwise appear to be contained. The push NW intensifies as
some German artillery finally makes its way up to help in the attacks. 6th Army appears to still be distracted by pushing
SW, but the thought was to cross the Meuse and grab some of the F/G entry hexes to prevent British reinforcements.
Start of eighth Day (start of Turn 17). Attacks towards Liege fail miserably as the bridge is finally blown, effectively
halting any real chance the Germans have of taking all four Liege hexes. The 9th and 12th SS, along with the F-Gr
and the 116th make strong progress near Ohey, opening a huge hole in the Allied lines. In the SW, elements of 3rd PG
and Lehr continue to play a cat and mouse game with the Allied paratroopers, while the rest of the 7th army struggles to
keep the flank from cracking.

Allied threat to German at-start areas is greatly reduced, at the cost of the 15th PG being committed defensively. The
Allies responded poorly to the threat W of Liege and will pay because of the lack of units sent that way.
Start of ninth Day (start of Turn 19). Highpoint of German progress, with 2 of the C Victory cities (Huy and Andenne)
and technically enough VCs to win (#blush#, though I did not realize this at the time!). Allies have punched several
holes in the flank guarded by the 7th Army, but appear unlikely to be able to make it to the German start areas. The
Germans abandoned the drive on Liege and managed to cross the Meuse with elements of the 116th and F-Gr, but
the British quickly counterattack and contain any advance.

I forgot that St Hubert and Marche-en-Famenne are on the West map, so the Germans have 9 D cities at this point.
Start of tenth Day (start of Turn 21). I ended here when it became apparent that Boullon was likely to fall to the 35th INF
division and Paratroopers, as well as the isolated Huy (though the 116th MECH survived a 5:1 with merely an attackers
advantage result). Allied counterattacks near Dinant successfully prevented the 9th SS from ever getting a real shot at
taking the city (even 1:1s, shifted twice by ART and 1-2 times with air can be devastating).

Had the Allies sent a few more units W, the cities of Huy and Andenne would likely have not fallen, which would have
been sufficient to deny the Germans victory. See related AAR, including suggestions and other strategy tips from this
session.
