REDOX TITRATION CALCULATIONS

1) A tablet weighing 0.940 g was dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid made up to 250
cm3 with water. 25.0 cm3 of this solution was titrated with 0.00160 M K 2Cr2O7
requiring 32.5 cm3 of the K2Cr2O7. Calculate the percentage by mass of Fe2+ in
the tablet.

2) Calculate the volume of 0.0200 mol dm-3 potassium permanganate which just
reacts with 0.142 g of iron (II) sulphate, in acid solution.

3) 3.00 g of a lawn sand containing an iron (II) salt was shaken with dilute H 2SO4.
The resulting solution required 25.00 cm3 of 0.0200 mol dm-3 potassium
permanganate to oxidise the Fe2+ ions in the solution to Fe3+ ions. Use this to
calculate the percentage by mass of Fe2+ ions in this sample of lawn sand.

4) Ammonium iron (II) sulphate crystals have the following formula:

(NH4)2SO4.FeSO4.nH2O. In an experiment to find n, 6.631 g of the salt were
dissolved and made up to 250 cm3 solution with distilled water and dilute sulphuric
acid. A 25.0 cm3 portion of the solution was titrated against 0.0150 mol dm-3
KMnO4, 22.5 cm3 being required. Calculate n.

5) A piece of iron wire weighs 2.225 g. It is dissolved in acid, which oxidises it to

Fe2+, and made up to 250 cm3. A 25 cm 3 sample required 31.0 cm3 of a 0.0185
mol dm-3 solution of potassium dichromate. Calculate the percentage of iron in
the wire.

6) A 25.0 cm3 aliquot of a solution containing Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was acidified and
titrated against 0.0200 M potassium permanganate solution, requiring 15.0 cm3.
Zn reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ and a second aliquot was reduced by zinc and after
filtering off the excess zinc, was titrated with the same potassium permanganate
solution, requiring 19.0 cm3. Calculate the concentrations of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ in
the solution.

7) A sample of solid ethanedioic acid (H2C2O4.2H2O) has been contaminated with

potassium ethanedioate (K2C2O4.xH2O). A 1.780 g sample of this mixture was
made up to a 250 cm3 solution with distilled water. A 25 cm3 sample was titrated
against 0.100 mol dm-3 sodium hydroxide, requiring 17.35 cm3. Another 25 cm3
sample was acidified with sulphuric acid and titrated against 0.0200 mol dm -3

25.0 mL (1/10th) was titrated with 0.00160 M K2Cr2O4 requiring 32.5 mL of K2Cr2O4

Cr2O72-- + 14 H+ + 6Fe2+ 2 Cr3+ + 7H2O + 6Fe3+

n dichromate = C x V = 0.00160 x 0.0325 = 5.20 x 10 -5

mole ratio of dichromate to Fe2+ is 1 to 6

niron(II) = 3.12 x 10-4 mol in the 25.0 mL was originally taken from

250.0 mL so x 10. niron(II) = 3.12 x 10-3 mol in the 250.0 mL

miron(II) = 3.12 x 10-3 x 55.85 = 0.1743 g

% iron(II) = 0.1743 / 0.940 x100 = 18.54 %

of iron (II) sulphate, in acid solution.

MnO4 + 8H + 5Fe Mn + 4H2O + 5Fe

0.142 g iron(II)sulphate has n = m/Mr = 0.142/ 151.85 = 9.35 x10-4 mol

niron(II) = 9.35 x10-4 mol , permanganate to iron(II) mol ratio is 1 : 5

npermandanate = (9.35 x10-4) / 5 = 1.87 x 10-4 mol

Vpermandanate = n /C = 1.87 x 10-4 / 0.0200 = 9.35 x 10-3 L or 9.35 mL

solution required 25.00 cm3 of 0.0200 mol dm-3 potassium permanganate to oxidise the Fe2+ ions

25.00 mL of 0.020 M nMnO4- = C x V = 0.0200 x 0.0250 = 5.00 x10-4 mol

permanganate to iron(II) mol ratio is 1 : 5 ,

nMnO4- = 5.00 x10-4 mol : niron(II) = 5 x 5.00 x10-5 mol = 2.5 x 10-3 mol

niron(II) = 2.5 x 10-3 mol , m iron(II) = n x Mr = 2.5 x 10-3 x 55.85 = 0.1396 g

as % Fe / sample x100 = 0.1396 / 3.00 = 4.65 %

distilled water and dilute sulphuric acid. A 25.0 cm 3 portion of the solution was titrated against

nMnO4- = C x V = 0.0150 x 0.0225 = 3.375 x 10-4 mol , mol ratio 5 : 1

niron(II) = 3.375 x 10-4 x 5 = 1.688 x 10-3 mol in 25.0 mL

niron(II) = 1.688 x 10-3 x 10 mol = 1.688 x 10-2 mol in 250.0 mL

niron(II) = niron(II)ammonium sulphate = 1.688 x 10-2 mol

Mr = m / n = 6.631 g / 1.688 x 10-2 mol = 392.95 g/mol

Mr of (NH4)2SO4.FeSO4.nH2O = 392.95 g/mol ,

n dichromate = C x V = 0.0185 x 0.0310 = 5.735 x 10-4 mol

n iron(II) =3.441 x 10-2 mol in 250.0 mL
m iron(II) = 3.441 x 10-2 x 55.85 = 1.922 g
