What is vertigo?
Vertigo is a false sense of motion, spinning or rotating of the world around us. It is also called as dizziness, light-
headedness, giddiness or chakkar.

Vertigo sometimes strikes suddenly or affects the person gradually. The severity of the dizziness is dependent on the
underlying medical condition.

Vertigo is symptomatic and points at an untreated medical condition manifesting as a balance disorder.

Vertigo stops or subsides when the cause of vertigo is treated appropriately.

Vertigo or dizziness may result from a problem in these 2 regions:

Peripheral or Vestibular

Central

Peripheral vertigo; around 70% of vertigo patients suffer from issues in the vestibular region.

The vestibular region lies in the inner ear of a person, which is a network of delicate nerves comprising sensory
nerves, fluid and blood vessels. This part of the inner ear connects to the brain, and together they help control eye
movements and body balance.

Any disturbance in the ear results in balance disorder.

A central vertigo is caused due to an injury, infection or tumorous (not cancerous) growth in any part of the brain.

Why should you treat vertigo?

Prima-facie, vertigo is not a fatal condition. However, if you get a sudden vertigo bout, while you are involved in any
activity (like walking down the street, working on a machine, cycling, driving, or exercising), the fall or unsteadiness
may prove life-threatening or result in a severe injury.

The imbalance issue disturbs the daily life, confidence and independent movement.

Hence, it is essential to treat vertigo at the earliest to curb terminal conditions in future.

What are associated symptoms of vertigo?

Vertigo affected person may also encounter these associated symptoms:

Nausea Reduced cognitive abilities

Vomiting Inability to focus
Headache Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
Profuse sweating Loss or reduced hearing ability
Confusion
The above symptoms are not exhaustive, though. Every vertigo affected person has different symptoms of dizziness.
The dizziness spell may last from a second to minutes, hours or even days! The frequency and severity of dizziness
vary from person to person.

What are the causes of vertigo?

A thorough neuro-otological examination helps the doctors diagnose the exact cause of vertigo and treat
accordingly.

Various causes of vertigo/balance disorder:

BPPV Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. A mechanical problem in the inner ear when the calcium
carbonate crystals from the utricle dislodge and migrate to fluid filled semi-circular canals in the inner ear.
These crystals are meant to sense the gravity. Since they float around in BPPV condition, the false signal of
gravity is transmitted to the brain and result is disequilibrium.
Meniere's Disease A condition where the pressure build-up in the inner ear, causes imbalance.
Vestibular Migraine It is a nervous system problem with vestibular nerve causing a vestibular migraine.
Along with dizziness, the affected people grow photophobic or turn overly sensitive to surrounding noises.
Vestibular Neuritis Inflammation or infection of a vestibular nerve, causes vestibular neuritis; hampering
the body's balance mechanism.
Labyrinthitis Labyrinth infection in the inner ear triggers dizziness as the brain receives mismatched
sensory signals.
Acoustic Neuroma A cyst or a tumour (non-cancerous) on the vestibulocochlear nerve affects the sensory
function and causes body imbalance.
Otolith Dysfunction Otoliths are meant to sense gravity and linear acceleration. Damage to the otolith or
part of it, makes the person feel unsteady or have rocking sensation.
Perilymph Fistula A small tear of inner ear leaks the fluid into the middle ear, affecting the pressure in the
inner ear. This condition affects both auditory as well as balance function of the body.
Vestibulopathy When both sides of vestibular nerve are damaged, the affected person experiences
balance disorders and visual impairment.
Psychogenic Disorders Prolonged periods of anxiety, stress and depression cause dizziness. Psychogenic
dizziness cannot be called as chronic dizziness.
Vestibular Paroxysmia An irritation in the vestibular nerve, triggers spells of dizziness.
Multiple Sclerosis This is a condition of a central nervous system where the body's immune system is
affected. The inflammation damages the protective cover of the nerve cells meddling with the neural signal
transmission.
SSCD This is a condition where a tiny bone part of the labyrinth is either absent or damaged. This
malfunction leads to balance and hearing problems.
MDS This condition usually follows after an air or ship travel. The person feels a constant sense of motion,
spinning, rocking or swaying. It is also seen that some people develop this condition even if they were not on
long travel.

How to diagnose vertigo?

There is a set of tests the vertigo specialist doctors conduct to diagnose vertigo and its causes.

How to treat vertigo?

Medication, surgery and exercises are the three treatment modalities of balance disorder and its cause.

Depending on the underlying conditions and severity of vertigo the treatment modality is decided by the doctors.

Vertigo exercises are the most fruitful line of treatment for balance disorders. Epley Maneuver, Semont Maneuver,
Brandt-Daroff exercises, Romberg exercise, Foster or Half Somersault Maneuver, head exercises and others. The
vertigo exercises give best results if done under professionally trained therapist.

Surgery is recommended mostly for the rarest and severest cases of vertigo.

Are medications best bet to treat vertigo?

Medications are a good bet for a short duration in severe cases of vertigo and associated symptoms. But the
continued use of medicines causes adverse effects. Hence, the medication alone cannot cure vertigo.
What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehabilitation is an extremely effective therapy for people suffering from balance disorders. Trained
professionals should conduct the therapy for best results.

In this therapy, the brain is retrained to use other senses to substitute for the inefficient vestibular system.

Balance training, gaze stabilisation, desensitisation and habituation are the four main exercises conducted in a VRT.

What do NeuroEquilibrium's advanced vertigo and balance clinics do?

NeuroEquilibrium's chain of super specialty vertigo clinics diagnoses and treats vertigo with the help of advanced
cloud technology. The diagnostic devices are developed in India by NeuroEquilibrium Diagnostic Systems Pvt Ltd at
Jaipur.

The diagnostic devices use ultra-modern technologies like Videoystagmography, Subjective Visual Vertical,
CranioCorpography, Dynamic Visual Acuity, ElectroNystagmography and Assessment Platform to diagnose and treat
vertigo. NeuroEquilibrium has filed for three patents in this field, which are pending for approval.

The devices operate on a cutting-edge assessment platform run on cloud technology. All the tests to diagnose
vertigo are integrated on a single platform, and the reports are shared with expert neurotologists in real-time for
analysis and treatment recommendation.

The system is one click enabled that provides all the details of each patient in a very comprehensive manner. That
includes the patient's tests, reports, diagnosis, the line of treatment, improvement tracking etc.

The speciality vertigo clinics are one-stop holistic treatment centres for vertigo and balance disorders.

The test reports are referred to the experts like otologists, neurologists, neurotologists, psychiatrists and
audiologists, for accurate diagnosis of the cause of vertigo and treatment recommendation. The remote review of
reports and discussions are all enabled in real-time with the help of cloud technology integrated assessment
platform.

The vertigo clinics are run in collaboration with leading ENT and neurology specialists.
How does the treatment at NeuroEquilibrium differ from the other clinics?
The vestibular rehabilitation treatment is customised for every patient in NeuroEquilibrium's speciality clinics for
vertigo.

Here, we understand that every patient's condition, cause, severity and need is different. So, the VRT is tailored to
meet their recovery needs rather than put them on standard therapy.

The customised VRT helps them recover and restore their balance pretty quickly and return to normal life.

We are using virtual reality in our VRTs to relieve the patients from balance disorders and discomfort quickly. This
technology-driven therapy gives long lasting results too.
