Acknowledgement
First, I would like to thank God for helping me to complete this project.
I would like to thank my Chemistry teacher Mr. Pratheesh P whose
valuable guidance has been the one that helped me complete this
project. His suggestions and her instructions served as a major
contribution towards the completion and understanding of the
project. I am also thankful to Mrs. Kavitha , the lab assistant. Their
valuable guidance, support and supervision are considerably
responsible for helping this project attain its present form. I also wish
to acknowledge my heart full thanks to Mrs. Malathy Narayanan, the
Principal of our school, my parents and friends who helped me to
complete the project in time.

Knowledge in the end, is based on acknowledgment

Introduction
EXPERIMENT
Aim:
To extract essential oils from Saunf (Aniseed) and Ajwain (Carom) seeds
by the use of steam distillation process.

Apparatus:
Round bottom flask (500 ml), conical flask, condenser, glass tubes, iron stand,
sand bath, separatory funnel, tripod stands, Bunsen burner, Required seeds,
Petroleum ether.
Principle:
Steam Distillation: This technique is applied to separate substances which are
steam volatile and are immiscible with water.
Procedure:
In steam distillation,
steam from a steam
generator is passed
through a heated flask
containing the liquid to
be distilled. The mixture
of steam and the volatile
organic compound is
condensed and collected.
The compound is later
separated from water
using a separating
funnel.
In steam distillation, the liquid boils when the sum of vapour pressures due to
the organic liquid (p1) and that due to water (p2) becomes equal to the
atmospheric pressure (p), i.e. p =p1+ p2. Since p1 is lower than p, the organic
liquid vaporises at lower temperature than its boiling point. Thus, if one of the
substances in the mixture is water and the other, a water insoluble substance,
then the mixture will boil close to but below, 373K. A mixture of water and the
substance is obtained which can be separated by using a separating funnel.
Aniline is separated by this technique from aniline water mixture.
