1 LP Introduction to Robotics
Comments in yellow should be discussed.
Standards
Standard 1.
Student will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of technology.
Standard 3.
Engineering Design and Development - Students will demonstrate knowledge of and apply the
engineering design process to develop solutions to problems.
Standard 4.
Students will develop an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of
technology.
Standard 19.
Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use manufacturing
technologies.

Stage 1 Desired Results

Big Idea(s):
Throughout history, robotics has positive and negative impacts on society.
Essential Question(s):

1. What is robotics?
2. What vocabulary do I need to know to understand robotics?
3. How do robots impact society?
4. Predict the future of robotics?

Student Objective(s):
Students will develop an graphic organizer in order to analyze the benefits or drawbacks of
robotics.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Performance Task(s):
Students will develop an infographic in order to analyze the benefits or drawbacks of robotics
Other Evidence:
Class discussion on the ethics of robotics in todays society

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Total Time:
2 Hours
Engagement:
Students will use Course Arc (bcps.coursearc.com NEED TO ORGANIZE OR FIND ALTERNATIVE TO
THIS ASSIGNMENT IF COURSE ARC IS NOT AVAILABLE.) to read about robotics and complete the
activities.
AS AN ALTERNATIVE, Students may complete an optional/alternative reading TR How
Robots Work (or online article
http://www.rivervalley.k12.oh.us/cms/lib02/OH16000118/Centricity/Domain/71/RVHS_Goodwin_Te
ch_RobotsBB.pdf)
Exploration:
1. Teacher will demonstrate how to turn on the robot and basic function of the controller.
2. Teacher will identify appropriate student groups to allow students to explore the robot.
3. Teacher can place cubes around the classroom in order for students to learn how to
control the robot.
4. Suggested game may include stacking/moving cubes
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMQAYdLGOMQ).
5. Students will be given time to drive and explore the functionality of the VEX IQ
Clawbot by interacting with the game cubes.
6. Teacher will demonstrate how to store/charge robots.

Explanation:
1. Student will complete a graphic organizer (1.1 SR Labeling the Parts of the VEX
IQ.dox) in order to identify the components of the robot.
2. Students may turn in the graphic organizer as a formative assessment. This can be
done during the exploration activity.
3. In order to complete the activity, students will use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to
complete their graphic and summarize what they learned during the exploration
activity.
4. Teacher will assess student's completed graphic organizer.
Extension:
1. Students will select a reading relating to robotics/automation affect in society. Below is
a suggested link to three readings: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/can-we-
adapt-to-robots-in-the-workplace/2015/03/15/ce58ea7a-c9aa-11e4-b2a1-

c. Newest Workers for Lowes: Robots: https://www.wsj.com/articles/newest-
workers-for-lowes-robots-1414468866
2. Students will take notes on the reading using the graphic organizer 1.1 SR The Pros
and Cons of Robotics.
3. Teacher will pose the following questions.
a. How do robots positively impact society?
b. How do robots negatively impact society?
c. Predict how your robot will positive and negative impacts society in the future.
Give specific examples to support your answer.
4. Students may share their information via multiple tools such as digital posters. (Print a
QR code that links the poster).
5. Students will pair with a student (from a different reading) and discuss their findings.
6. Students will update their graphic organizer (1.1 SR The Pros and Cons of
Robotics.) with additional examples from their partner.
7. Optional Activity:
Students will discuss the differences and similarities between robots in both real life
and science fiction. Students will record this in a central location for all to see later. For
example, students can design a physical or digital poster (Print a QR code that links
the poster). Teachers can select the best tool at BCPS odl

Exit Ticket
Scenario : The prices of 3D printers are now low enough for consumers to purchase for
home use. Consumers are now printing their own cell phone accessories. What are the Pros
and Cons of 3D printed accessories? Support your claims using previous class discussion.

Think about how this technology will impact local and global employment
opportunities.
Think about how this will change trends in cell phone accessories.
