Portfolio Artifact Description: MCD Spreadsheet and Fries- Using Microsoft Excel create a
What you learned: The instructions for the MCD Spreadsheet and Fries project appeared easier
than the application. It had been many years since Ive had to use the Microsoft Excel software
so it was like using it for the first time. There were many features I had to learn before
organizing the data given. Initiating my project, I struggled with inserting a title because when I
had put my title in a cell the whole column would unnecessarily widen. The merge and center
feature helped me write a centered title without interfering with the rest of the cells in my
spreadsheet. Then, I kept getting an error that read #VALUE! when I attempted to average the
numbers on my spreadsheet. Through trial and error, I realized the error was because I had
written the word grams with the numbers I had to average. I rewrote my spreadsheet with only
numbers within the cells and I did not get the error any longer. The last thing I struggled with
was constructing the pie graph on the last spread sheet. Unlike the other two graphs where I
easily highlighted all my numerical data to make a graph, highlighting was not an option for the
pie graph because only part of the data was required. After failed attempts to make the pie graph
using my spreadsheet, I decided to make a new spread sheet with only the data that had to be on
the pie graph. My pie graph was then successfully built with the new spreadsheet. I took time
figuring out how to use all the different tools from Microsoft Excel, but I could definitely say I
Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that
I think it is great that we had this assignment. Its a fun way to introduce students to organizing
numerical data. It allows students to practice their addition and multiplication skills. They also
get to visualize how a change in number makes an impact since digits are automatically
recalculated. It also helps students understand money and how numbers are applied in every day
life. They also get to construct different graphs and analyze them for a better understanding of
the spreadsheet. This project allows students to use many aspects of the school curriculum. I
would like to implement this project on a statistics math lesson in my classroom. I would have
each student survey their classmates on an approved topic. Then, they can make a spreadsheet
