Procedure

This experiment aimed to separate the chalk from a slurry by sedimentation. This was done by

first having a constant volume of water, second was having a constant volume of slurry and lastly having

a constant concentration (% by weight), varying volume of slurry.

For the preparation of the slurry, first, the chalk was pulverized using the mortar and pestle and

then the desired amount of chalk and water was calculated depending on the group assignment. The

measured chalk was screened using the sieve then mix with the amount of needed water on a beaker to

produce the required concentration of the slurry. Initial mixing using the stirring rod was done until a

homogenous mixture was attained. The mixture was then transferred to the sedimentation tube and

carefully shook for 20 minutes to produce a consistent suspension. After shaking, the tube was put in the

sedimentation apparatus, the initial height was read, allowed the chalk to settle, followed by the reading

of the heights with 1 minute interval for 1 hour. Next to the first hour of reading, another recording of

height was done but now with 10 minute interval again for 1 hour. Lastly, to complete the experiment, 24

hours was allowed to lapse and then the ultimate height of the slurry was read. All heights were recorded

and will be use for the graph and computation.
