PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1 warm-up/ checking homework (8minutes)

Aims: -to check students homework;
-to warm up the students and get them focusing on the lesson;
-to activate the background knowledge of weather vocabulary;
-to initiate discussion
The students were asked to write a vocabulary exercise (fill-in)
The teacher invites the students to look at the picture and the title of the lesson and predict what the
article is about. As an alternative the teacher can ask students questions on the pictures:
Why is the Earth burning? / Why is the Earth crying? /Whats going on ?
What evidence is there that the earth is actually warming up? / What might be causing any global
warming? / What effect might global warming have on the earth's inhabitants?

ACTIVITY 2 lead in (10 minutes) GW

Aims: -to introduce the new topic vocabulary;
-to create interest in the topic;
-to express flexibility while working in groups
The teacher introduces the theme of the lesson and announces the objectives to be achieved.
The students are told they are going to find more about the climate changes that have happened in
the last decades. Students have to answer to the questions on the Climate Change Quiz. T discusses and
teaches students basic information about the weather events and vocabulary and topics that are part of
the quiz. After that the teacher posts the terms, "global warming "and "greenhouse effect" on the
blackboard and asks students to think without talking about a definition for the global warming and
greenhouse effect. The teacher gives them a minute to formulate their ideas and then have them write
down their definitions so they can share them.

ACTIVITY 3 listening/ reading to confirm expectations (5minutes) PW

Aims: -to listen/ read to confirm expectations about the text;
-to make prediction about the ideas contained in the text;
-to get the main idea of the text
Teacher asks students to read a short summary and underline the correct words by guessing. They
have to choose from two given words.
Students then listen/ read the text and check their answers to complete the task. Teacher checks and
helps if necessary.

ACTIVITY 4 listening/ reading for detailed comprehension (8 minutes) PW

Aims: -to read/listen to identify the key information needed in solving the task;
-to identify the right order of the paragraphs removed from the text
Teacher asks students to read the paragraphs removed from the text in order to decide the right order
of the missing paragraphs, and explains the meaning of some words or expressions.
Students listen to the text and complete the task. Teacher then asks students to check the solutions
each other and helps if necessary.

ACTIVITY 5 vocabulary study and practice (15 minutes) GW

Aims: -to get students practice the new vocabulary;
-to explain the meaning of some words and identify their synonyms and collocations;
-to make prediction about the potential impact of global warming
The students have to explain some idioms related to weather, then make sentences using them.
Teacher asks students to work in groups of four to hypothesize about how the world's climate could
change over the next 100 years if humans do nothing to limit the levels of their greenhouse gas
emissions, and about the effects such climate changes could have on humans. Students will cooperate
within the groups so as to find as many ideas as possible. Each group, in turn, will come with a
definition and discuss it with the rest of the class (for example : damage to infrastructure, lakes, rivers,
and forests; ice sheets melting , rising sea levels, release of stored carbon (methane and CO2), melting
glaciers, increase in hurricanes, wildlife effects, precipitation changes, effect on humans , forest fires
etc). The teacher writes the most important of them on the blackboard and then shows students a Power
Point Global warming that accurately describes the consequences of global warming. T might ask
students take turns reading the slides

ACTIVITY 6 evaluations and homework assignment (4 minutes)

Aims: -to evaluate students activity;
-to assign students follow-up activity
Teacher evaluates students activity during the class, grades some of them and accounts for them.
Students are assigned to write a short composition about how the weather can affect our life.

2. Warmer temperatures are NOT responsible for the recent increased severity of hurricanes.
T F
3. Warmer temperatures are causing Arctic sea ice to melt, which is increasing sea levels.
T F
4. Climate change is expected to be responsible for the extinction of 30% of current animal species.
T F
5. Forests will not be affected by climate change because trees are very hardy species.
T F
6. People in the United States may be at risk for malaria if temperatures continue to rise.
T F
7. Allergies and asthma will get better because of the decrease in humidity associated with climate
change.
T F
8. Wild fires will be more intense and more frequent in the future.
T F
9. Climate change will only cause a small increase in temperatures.

10. Climate change is something that will affect future generations, it is NOT happening now.
