THE EVIDENCE BASED
PROCESS
How to play the game:
The attached visual represents the seven step by step process of Evidence-Based Practice in the
form of a puzzle piece Candy Land game. As one plays this game, you have to make sure that
you do not skip any steps, to ensure that you are properly and thoroughly completing the
evidence-based practice process. With that said, you cannot continue to the next step until you
have gained knowledge on each step. When playing this game make sure your partner is able to
explain each of the following steps of the evidence based practice; one has to cultivate a spirit of
inquiry, identify the question, research evidence and evidence-based theories, integrate the
evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values, and then evaluate the patient
outcomes. Some acceptable answers would be:

Step 1: According to Melnyk (2010), Taking into account a patients population of interest (P),
intervention or area of interest (I), comparison intervention or group (C), outcome (O), and time
(T).
Step 2: Searching for the best evidence to inform clinical practices
Step 3: From the evidence, what can we conclude is the most valid, reliable and relevant
information
Step 4: Integration of evidence with clinical expertise
Step 5: Evaluate the outcomes of the practice decisions or changes based on evidence. In this
step you notice flaws and make changes that will help identify what is working best for the
patients.
Step 6: In this step it is important to share experiences with colleagues and healthcare
organizations to ensure that studies are not duplicated.
