Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson I will teach will take about forty minutes. I will start off the lesson by asking students what comes
to mind when they hear the word matter. Students will tell me what they think of. I will then say, well class,
matter is the stuff that objects are made out of. I would then ask the class, what are humans made of out.
Hopefully, some students will say bones, skin, teeth, hair, etc. I would then say you matter because you are
made out of matter. Or I could say everything matters because it is made out of matter. I would then say we
are going to watch a quick video on matter. Before playing the video, I will tell my students to be sure to pay
attention because there is a quiz at the end of the video. After they answer all the questions, I will have them
turn it in. To extend the lesson to a higher level, I will have the students log on

liquid to gas, gas to solid, etc. For my higher level learners, I explain to them that with each phase change
heat is either absorbed or released. I will have them write down if heat is being absorbed or released for each
change ( gas to liquid, liquid to solid, solid to liquid). To make sure children are understanding, I will walk
around and have them tell me if the object is in a liquid, solid, or gas phase and how they can tell. To conclude
the lesson, I will have students fill out a KWL chart. Students will fill in one thing they want to already know,
want to know, and ultimately learn. At the bottom of the chart, I will a section that says questions. Here
students can ask any questions about concepts that they didnt understand. This chart will give me an idea of
whether or not the lesson was effective based on the students responses. The next class, I will clarify any
confusion before moving forward. For the topics that students want to learn more about I will use them as
extension activities for another day.
