CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
Discuss the problem you want to solve or issue you want to analyze and discuss,
for example- understanding things about a range of stakeholders: managers,
staff, customers and owners; business entities such as companies and
partnerships and co-operatives; economies and how they affect business
operations; product and services and how they vary over time, how they can be
produced efficiently; money and what regulates its availability, how it produces
profit, and government and how their policy affects business operations,
customers income and needs, etc. (Greener and Martelli, 2015, p.13)
The goal of the research must be presented briefly but clearly in this chapter.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework
Business research is likely to involve some theories or concepts (Greener p. 14)
or models adapted or used as business decision-making tools. (ex. Product Life
Cycle Theory, Contingency Theory, Theory X and Theory Y, Product-Market
Strategy Analysis, Vital Few Analysis, Competitive Product Placement,
Competitor Analysis, SWOT Analysis, Business Excellence Framework, etc. )
(Turner, 2010)
A theory explains how and why the variables are related, acting as a bridge
between or among the variables. The theoretical framework is done after the
literature review by choosing the appropriate/related theory from the reading
materials and describing its history.
Theory makes generalizations about observations and consists of interrelated ,
coherent set of ideas and models. There are three basic types of theories: 1)
descriptive theories; 2) explanatory theories; and 3) predictive theories. For
purposes of uniformity, the CBET Marketing Department would use the
descriptive theory which is a summary of commonalities found in discrete
observations like counts, proportions, etc, which does not need hypothesis. The
descriptive research design is appropriate for descriptive theories.
Conceptual framework differs in a sense that it is a less formal structure.
