Daily Lesson Plan

Miss Emily Wilson/ Kindergarten ELA and Art/ March 22, 2016

I. Topic
Students will use knowledge of dinosaurs to determine where dinosaurs would fit into the
modern world if dinosaurs were to return.

II. Objective/Standard
Objective: Following the read-aloud of If the Dinosaurs Came Back, the students will be able to
identify and illustrate one way dinosaurs would help them in their lives.
Standards:
-RL.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
-RL.K.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the
story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).
-W.K.3 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several
loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a
reaction to what happened.
-VA:Cr2.1.Ka Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art
making.

III. Teaching Procedure (40 minutes)

A. Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)
1. Gather students on the rug, sitting around the rocking chair. Make sure
that students are sitting in their own spot.
2. Show students dinosaurs and ask students about the dinosaurs. Ask
students what job the dinosaurs might have played.
B. Development (10 minutes)
1. Read If the Dinosaurs Came Back written and illustrated by Bernard Most.
2. While reading the book, ask students what colors they see on the pages.
(yellow, pink, red, orange, black, white) Have students note that there is
only one color, and everything else is black and white.
3. At the end of the story, ask students about how dinosaurs could help them
in their lives. Use the dinosaurs from the anticipatory set to guide student
discussion.
4. Instruct students to return back to their desks.
C. Independent Practice (20 minutes)
1. Explain to students that they will be creating their own page from the
story. Model for students on paper how to write If the dinosaurs came
back, they would ___________________________________.
2. Tell students to think about one thing that dinosaurs could do to help them.
Have students think about how a triceratops, brachiosaurus, plesiosaurus,
pterodactyl or tyrannosaurus rex would help them in their lives. Show my
example of how a pterodactyl would help me.
3. Allow groups to come up and pick dinosaurs that they will be helping
them.
4. Instruct students to write what the dinosaurs would do to help them in
their blank. When they finish writing, instruct them to color their dinosaur
one color. After that, they should use their black marker to draw the lines
of the picture of what their dinosaur is doing. Finally, they should glue the
dinosaur onto their picture.
D. Closure (5 minutes)
1. Have students show their pictures of what their dinosaurs are doing. Have
them explain what job their dinosaurs are playing today.
IV. Materials

V. Adaptations
A. For ELLs, make sure that they know key vocabulary terms. Make sure that I
speak slowly and clearly. Clarify that this book is about what could happen, but
that it is not real.
B. Make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for students to move. Make sure
that all students have an opportunity to answer questions.
C. Make sure that everything is clearly explained so that students can follow
directions. Give one direction at a time so that students know exactly what they
should be doing.
D. If there is not enough time, only allow for a few students to share their pictures
and what their dinosaurs would do if they came back.
E. If there is extra time, allow all students to share their artwork. Allow them to
share what their dinosaur is doing, along with how the picture is showing what the
dinosaur is doing.
VI. Evaluation-
A. Formative assessment- throughout the story, closure
B. Summative assessment- image drawn and words written on page

VII. Reflection
A. Student-
1. Did the students understand the story?
2. Did the students understand the idea of background and foreground?
3. Did the students have enough time to create their artwork?
B. Teacher-
1. Did I speak clear enough for the students to understand me?
2. Did I give the students enough guidance for the artwork, but enough room
for creativity?
3. Would anything need to be retaught on the next day?
