SAINTPAUL,MINNOnSaturday,aterroristattackinthecitycenterofMogadishu,Somaliaclaimedthelives
ofatleast300peopleandinjuredseveralhundredmore.Aspeoplearoundtheworldmournafterthedeadliest
terrorattackinEastAfrica,Minnesotansaregatheringtonighttoholdavigilforpeaceandmournthelossof
hundredsofinnocentpeople.

MinnesotaStateRepresentativeIlhanOmar(DFLMinneapolis),thefirstSomaliAmericantobeelectedtoastate
legislatureintheUnitedStates,releasedthefollowingstatement:

Forsomanypeoplearoundtheworld,andhereinMinnesota,thisisatimeofcrisis.Aswemournthesenseless
killingofsomanyinnocentpeople,unityinthistimeofcrisisiscrucial.Manyofourneighborsarehurtingand
mourninglostrelativesandfriends.IhopeMinnesotansofallracesandreligionswilljoinusaswecometogether
toprocessthistragedyandprayforthevictimsandtheirfamilies.

Deadlyterroristattackshavebecomecommontothepointofmakingusnumbtotheirdestructiveforce,butwe
shouldnotbenumbedbecauseoftherace,religion,orgeographyofanattackofthismagnitude.Wemournwith
thefamiliesofMogadishuaswemournedwiththefamiliesinParis,Beirut,Brussels,NewYork,andBaghdad,and
manyothers.Inalltheseattacks,terroristshaveattemptedtoshakeourabilitytoseethesharedhumanityinone
anotherbyattemptingtoleaveamarkoffearonthesurvivors,insteadofamemoryofthevictimswhoarethe
mothers,fathers,brothers,sisters,andgrandparentsofsomanyaroundtheworldandinourowncommunity.We
standunitedforpeace,andaworldwithoutterror.

Minnesotanswillgathertonightfrom4:306:30pmattheBrianCoyleCenter(42015thAve.S,MinneapolisMN
55454)foravigilforpeaceandprayerforthepeopleofMogadishuandthefamiliesofMinnesotansimpactedby
thekillingoftheirlovedones.Allpeopleofeveryfaithcommunityareencouragedtoattendtojoininsolidarityfor
peace.
