DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION

The silo is a tank for the collection and storage of bulk solid materials in powder or granular form, with varying
particle size (cement, sand, limestone, lime, fly ash, etc.).
It is mainly used in the building sector.
Filling is done by means of a pneumatic pumping system, by means of a tube provided for the purpose in the
silo.
The pressure generated inside during pneumatic conveying passses through a filter placed on the silo roof or
on the ground.
The silos are located mainly outdoors and are fixed to a concrete platform.
The customer is responsible for sizing and construction of the afore-mentioned structure.
NOTE: If material other than cement, or material with special fluidity or granulometry features is to be
stored, contact the Manufacturer.

The silo can be equipped with various accessories, which, in certain circumstances become obligatory, such
as the dust filter.
In fact, in the light of the recent regulatory standards concerning environmental safety it is important to install
dust filters on silos containing dusty materials.
If the above-mentioned filters are installed at the top, ladders with rest landing must be provided to be able to
reach the top of the tank in complete safety to allow operators to carry out inspections and maintenance.

An inspection cover is provided at the top of the silos for inspection inside

DESIGN AND EXECUTION STANDARDS

Design and execution standards

Silos and accessories are designed and constructed according to the following standards:
1. ENV 1991-1:1996, Eurocode 1-1, Calculation basis and actions on structures
2. ENV 1991-2-1:1996, Eurocode 1-2, Actions on structures-Densities, self-weights and imposed loads
3. ENV 1991-2-3:1996, Eurocode 1-2-3, Actions on structures-Snow loads
4. ENV 1991-2-4:1997, Eurocode 1-2-4, Actions on structures-Wind actions
5. ENV 1991-4:1997, Eurocode 1-4, Calculation basis and actions on structures-actions on silos and
tanks
6. ENV 1993-1-1: 1994/A1:1998, Eurocode 3-1-1, Design of steel structures, general rules and rules for
buildings
7. ENV 1993-4-1:2002, Eurocode 4-1, Silos, tanks and pipelines-Silos
8. ENV 1998-1-1:1997, Eurocode 8-1-1 Design of structures for earthquake resistance -Seismic actions and
general requirements for the structures
9. ENV 1998-4:2000, Eurocode 8-4 Silos, tanks and pipelines
10. UNI EN 131/1 1994 ,Ladders: terminology, types and functional sizes
11. EN ISO 14122-3 : 2001 Stairs, step ladders and guard-rails and subsequent updates.

The following environmental data have also been taken into consideration for the design:
- wind load: 150 kg/m2.
- snow load: 300 kg/m2.
In cases where the actual values are higher than the theoretical data, the Customer must inform the
Manufacturer immediately.

2.2 Documentation and certifications

- Calculation report:
will be supplied if required, on payment, once the seismicity class, wind speed and the maximum snow load
of the Municipality in which the silo is installed are known. The original will be issued (triple copy), directly by
the qualified design engineer.
- Declaration concerning the Standards adopted for the design and production.
- EC Certification:
the European standards do not envisage this type of certification since the silo is an ordinary container for
powders filled by gravity.
It is not a machine because it does not have a mechanical motive power.

Attention
The silos are not designed for use as pressurized containers.
In fact, since there is a possibility of pressure or air flow rate conditions exceeding the normal parameters dur-
ing the filling phase, in order to prevent damage, it is advisable to install:
- an overpressure control Kit
- a relief valve
- a dust filter

Contraindications
Silos are not designed for storing materials that are harmful by contact and/or inhalation, or hazardous from the
bacteriological and viral point of view. Inform the Manufacturer if these needs are to be satisfied.

Standard and Heavy duty

In addition to the standard version, the heavy duty version is also available.
HEAVY DUTY SILO
- The four 4mm thick panels which form the first cylinder section are identified by a metal tag fixed to the flanges
by means of a tie.
- The number 4 is stamped on this tag.
- This cylinder section must be the first starting from the bottom, i.e. it must be positioned between the cylinder
cone and the subsequent cylinder sections.
- During the assembly of the panels and the cylinder sections, the sealant or the gasket provided must be ap-
plied according to the procedures described on page 13.
- The individual cylinder sections must be assembled on the ground thereby saving time.

The special layout of the wind bracing makes it possible to have a vast area through which the screw conveyors
can project out.
As a result, significant variations in the inclinations and lateral movements of the screw conveyors are permitted

In compliance with the current anti-pollution standards in force, it is obligatory to fit a dust removal system which
could be positioned on the ground or on the top of the silos.

1 - FILTER ON SILO
If positioned at the top of the silo, the material collected during the cleaning cycle is unloaded directly into the
silo. For more information on filters see page 48 .
NOTE: It is advisable to fit a separate filter on each silo.
The range includes three models.

HOOP LADDER
1- LADDER
Used for reaching the top of the roof.
It is constructed according to the latest European provisions in terms of operator safety (consult page 5).
A hoop guard is provided 2000-2500mm from the ground.
The guard arches have a radius of 350 mm and are present every 1120 mm
The 450mm long steps are made of 3+2 non-slip checker plate or safety tread plate.

The inverted C shape facing downwards, the type of sheet metal used and the two side openings prevent
water and mud stagnation, ensuring the operator a safe hold while climbing up and coming down.
The centre distance between one step and the next is 285mm. The Table shows the distances of the rest land-
ing from the ground. According to the standards, this value must be < 10 m.

Its shape prevents the operator from leaning over dangerously beyond the guard while moving from the lower
ladder upwards. It may be defined as a safety cage.

2- SAFETY ACCESSORIES
2.1- Safety grille
Applied at the lower end of the ladder. Prevents access to the work site by outsiders. It must be fixed to the
bottom ring of the guard by means of a padlock.
2.2- Door for upper railing
Applied to the railing at the entrance to the ladder. Prevents accidental fall through it. (Fig. 1)

OPTIONS: Railing

A railing can be mounted at the top of the silos so that operators can move safely.
A railing is indispensable when it is necessary to get to the top of the silos with a certain frequency. It must
always be connected with the hoop ladder.
If no guards are present, the operator must use the necessary means for safe access to the roof.

ACCESSORIES: Legs extension

Everytime the customer requires a distance of the outlet spout from the ground more than the standard (1,400
mm), the legs must be extended.
A maximum distance of 2,540 mm is permitted, which can be obtained by adding stub pipes of varying heights
(at 285 mm steps) as shown in the following diagrams.
For distances more than 2,540 mm an intermediate floor must be used.
Obviously it will be necessary to extend the hoop ladder, filling pipe and/or the exhaust pipe, if present .

In applications where the distance of the outlet spout from the ground must be 3.1 and 7.1 m, supporting frames
can be used which can be combined appropriately to satisfy these needs.
For maintenance on machines downline of the silo (valves, fluidization, screw conveyors, etc.) an intermediate
floor consisting of a treading floor made of metal grating, surrounding protective railing and ladder for access
are available.

From the treading floor it is possible to take the ladder to access the roof.
The treading floor is made of non-slip metal grating in order to prevent stagnation of water, snow or mud.
For intermediate heights, for e.g. 4.3 m, the raised feet Kit can be used (see page 40).

Finish: Hot galvanization

All the models are supplied dismantled and complete with nuts and bolts.

Obviously, if these accessories are present, the filling pipe and/or exhaust pipe will also have to be extended.
