1 A plane is missing, and it is presumed that it was equally likely to have gone down in any of the 3 possible
regions. Let 1 i denote the probability that the plane will be found upon a search of the ith region when
plane is, in fact, in the region, i = 1, 2, 3. What is the conditional probability that the plane is in the ith region,
given that a search of region 1 is unsuccessful, i = 1, 2, 3 ?
2 The probability mass function of a random variable is given by
f (x) = 21 2|x| , x = 1, 2, 3......
Find MX (t) and using it find E[X].
3 Three balls are to be randomly selected without replacement from an urn containing 20 balls numbered 1
through 20. If we bet that at least one of the drawn ball has a number as large as or larger than 17 , what is
the probability that we win the bet ?
4 A salesman has scheduled two appointments to sell encyclopedias. His first appointment will lead to a sale
with probability 0.3 and his second will lead independently to a sale with probability 0.6. Any sale made is
equally likely to be either for the deluxe model, which costs Rs. 1000, or the standard model, which costs Rs.
500. Determine the probability mass function of X, the total Rs. value of all the sales.
5 A person tosses a fair coin until a tail appears for the first time. If the tail appears on the nth flip, the person
wins Rs. 2n . Let X denote the players winnings. Show that E(X) = +.
6 The moment generation function of a random variable is given by
1
MX (t) = 1024 (1 + et )10
find P (X > 7).
7 Find the probability distribution and c.d.f. for the r.v. X, where X is the number of divisors of a randomly
chosen integer from 1 to 10.
8 A fair die is tossed. Let X be r.v. denoting twice the number appearing and Y be the r.v. 1 or 3 accordingly
as odd or even number appears. Then find the probability distribution, expectation and variance for the r.v.
Z = X + Y and W = X.Y . Also, verify
(i) E(Z) = E(X) + E(Y )
(ii) V ar(Z) 6= V ar(X) + V ar(Y )
(iii) E(W ) 6= E(X).E(Y )
9 Let X be a r.v. taking values 1, 2 and 3 with respective probabilities 0.3, 0.5 and 0.2.
(i)Find the expectation, variance and s.d. of X.
(ii)Find the expectation, variance and s.d. of Y = (X) where
(a)(X) = X 3 , (b)(X) = 2X , (c)(X) = X 2 + 3X + 4
1
10 The density of a discrete random variable X is given by f (x) = n where n is a positive integer, x =
x1 ; x2 ; ........; xn .
(i) Find moment generating function (m.g.f.) of X,
(ii) Use the m.g.f. to find E(X); Var(X).
11 A pair of dice is thrown. The random variable X is defined as the sum of the two outcomes.Determine the Expected
value and Variance of X.
