Why is it important for a primary care physician to be competent about genital tract infections?

Infectious diseases are an emerging healthcare problem all around the word in this day and age.
They are a threat to the human healthcare system. New types of infectious diseases are being discovered
every day, and the pharmaceutical industry cannot keep up with the emergence of these new diseases.
The rate of infections are increasing at an alarming rate, while the drugs that we use for these are
becoming less and less especially in the light of resistance among strains. As healthcare practitioners we
should be aware of this trend in order for us to do our part in helping prevent this threat to our society.
Antibiotic resistance is a threat in the emergence of these infections. New strains of bacteria and
viruses are coming out due to the improper use and prescription of drugs. As physicians we should be
knowledgeable in the proper use of these specific drugs in the treatment of such diseases. We should
teach our patients regarding the consequences of antibiotic resistance. We should educate them on
proper adherence to their treatment regimen in order to lessen the threat of resistance.
In this millennial age the people of the world have become more liberated. Sexual practices which
were once taboo have become the norm of this generation. This has contributed significantly to the
emergence and spread of genital tract infections. Unfortunately, it is not any more shocking to see cases
of sexually transmitted diseases in the clinics nowadays. Cases of STDs such as herpes, HIV, and the like
are seen in younger generations and this is very alarming. As future clinicians we should be attentive to
this problem. With our knowledge regarding these diseases, we should educate the people regarding the
severity of this problem. As physicians we are knowledgeable on how simple it is to actually prevent the
spread of these diseases. It is easier said than done, however if we teach these things to our patients, in
the long run it will have an impact on the prevention of the spread of the disease.
Education is not only important in the prevention of the spread of these diseases. This is also
helpful in removing the stigma that is connected to the people who have these diseases, especially those
with HIV/AIDS. A lot of people think that simple contact with individuals with this disease will get them
infected. Known HIV/AIDS patients are outcasts in the society because if this false belief. This leads to
other problems such as depression and higher risk of suicidal tendencies in infected individuals. Due also
to this stigma, people are afraid to get tested. People should not be afraid to get tested because if ever
they are infected we can help them. They do not have to suffer alone. We can help improve their quality
of life. It is our duty to inform the masses regarding what is true and what is false regarding this disease.
We should do are part in helping remove the stigma in HIV/AIDS patients.
