Madison West High School

Observation 3, Wednesday 03/04/17

This is the first in the series of a three-lesson geometry review using virtual
polystrips on the site:
https://media.pearsoncmg.com/curriculum/math/cmp3/activities/A82391/
Students should reference notes. These lessons are based on a self-paced review
using technology in an attempt to engage all students in the class.

Lesson One: Classifying Angles

Subject: Math 2 Jim McCoy (absent)
3023 Jeff Rice
Standards: College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics: Draw and
identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and
perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. (4.G.1)
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to correctly identify the lengths and
degrees in acute angles, right angles, and obtuse angles.

5 min Greeting: Welcome the class and see if anyone has something to share to
build community. Call on a student to read the lesson objective. Explain that we will
be reviewing geometry for the next three days using a virtual building tool that will
help us build and measure shapes. Today we will be getting used to the Polystrips
website and reviewing angles. Call on a student to hand out computers. Have
students log onto the site by Google-ing virtual Polystrips and choosing the link that
matches the one the review packet.

15 min Introduction to Polystrips: Model Polystrips for the class. Make students
follow along by following the my turn, your turn methods for (list on board for
visual prompt).
1. Creating Polystrips
2. Connecting Polystrips
3. Measuring Polystrips
4. Measuring Angles

Informal Formative Observation: Check-in with individuals while they are

exploring the Polystrips website to make sure they understand these four
concepts.

20 min Main Lesson: Hand out Geometry Review packets for students to create
an acute angle, a right angle, and an obtuse angle and measure and label the line
segment lengths and degrees.
Extension: Can you label vocabulary terms that we have learned?
(Line segment, vertex, point, side, etc.)
Work on the triangle section of the packet.

5 min Closing: Venn-Diagram comparing angles and Tri-angles.

Lesson Two: Classifying Triangles

Subject: Math 2 Jim McCoy
3023 Jeff Rice
Standards: College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics: Draw and
identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and
perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. (4.G.1)
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to correctly identify the lengths and
degrees in a right triangle, scalene triangle, equilateral triangle, and isosceles
triangle.

5 min Greeting: Greet students as they enter the classroom. Ask who will be here
on Friday. Is anyone leaving early for spring break? Explain that today we will be
continuing to review triangles using the virtual Polystrips. Call on a students to hand
out computers.

10 min Review of Polystrips: Review Polystrips for the class by modeling. Make
students follow along by following the my turn, your turn methods for (list on
board for visual prompt).
1. Creating Polystrips
2. Connecting Polystrips
3. Measuring Polystrips
4. Measuring Angles

Informal Formative Observation: Check-in with individuals while they are

reviewing the Polystrips website to make sure they understand these four
concepts.

20 min Main Lesson: Let students progress independently through their geometry
review packet. Monitor student understanding of triangles.

Extension: Can you label vocabulary terms that we have learned?

(Line segment, vertex, point, side, etc.)
Work on the quadrilateral section of the packet.

10 min Closing: Venn-Diagram comparing triangles and quadrilaterals.

Lesson Three: Classifying Quadrilaterals
Subject: Math 2 Jim McCoy
3023 Jeff Rice
Standards: College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics: Draw and
identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and
perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures. (4.G.1)
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to correctly identify the lengths and
degrees in a square, parallelogram, trapezoid, and kite.

10 min Greeting: I predict students will come in excited for spring break. Students
will need time to share their plans for break. Call on a student to read the lesson
objective. Call on a student to hand out computers. Reiterate that today we are
working on the quadrilateral section of the review packet and if we finish, we will be
able to play a game.

15-20 min Main Lesson: Let students progress independently through their
geometry review packet. Monitor student understanding of quadrilaterals.

Extension: Can you label vocabulary terms that we have learned?

(Line segment, vertex, point, side, etc.)
Work on the polygon section of the packet.

10-15 min Closing/Activity: Let students choose between Silent Ball, Hangman,
or Seven Up.
